One of the finest films ever made about Beethoven. Gary Oldman hypnotic as the maestro and Jeroen Krabbé gives the story a melancholic setting but stirs emotions and fantasies that only Beethoven's music can. Watch this and feel the power of the Ode to Joy

The story centers around a letter found upon Beethoven's death, addressed to his "Immortal Beloved", and putting forth three women who may possibly have been the person he was referring to. Great acting, and of course the wonderful music of Beethoven. Gary Oldman is fantastic. Highly recommend!

Love the music from this movie. The movie is very good, and the soundtrack is perfect. It includes one of my favorite songs, Ode to Joy, which is just magnificent.

Movie got good ratings, but thought was only average. Moderately entertaining, but no Amadeus.

This is a film is sumptuous in its look, vivid in it's scope, and bold with the answer to the mystery. One of Gary Oldman's best performances.

First, I really like Gary Oldman and Isabella Rossellini. So I'm biased. But I've enjoyed this movie since I first saw it when it came out in '94. It reminds me a lot of The Red Violin, one of my very favorite movies. It has elements of a timeless love story, an epic period piece, a compelling mystery and a decent (if speculative) biopic. The score is fantastic (if you like classical music) and the cinematography is first-rate throughout. I'm not big on DVD Extras, so I haven't checked them out as yet to see if it really rates a "Special Edition" tagline. All-in-all a great film that holds up very well even 16 years later.
