Notwithstanding that the filmmakers strayed from the original story written by Dorothy Hughes, this one is always a winner. One of Bogart's greatest roles. Constantly listed as one of very Best if not The Best of the several hundred film noir made in the 40's and 50's. Thanks to Criterion for making this available once again in best film quality to date with bonuses.

Humphrey Bogart's best role. He plays against type as a screenwriter with a really bad temper.

An excellent film noir. Blind purchase by me and I don’t regret it one bit. The tempestuous screenwriter Dixon Steele (Humphrey Bogart, excellent as usual) may have murdered a woman. A cleverly written thriller.
Very good transfer by Criterion.

A great movie with excellent acting and a script that is as sharp as the two leads. Gloria is glorious as an actress and to see - one the most underrated actresses. They have the same spark as Bogart and Bacall. Ending is a logical conclusion but emotionally unsatisfying. It has the "life is pain, anyone telling you otherwise is selling something" view of life.
