    Cheap Sound, Terrible Radio Tuning

I knew this wasn't going to be anything close to audiofile sound or anything, but this isn't worth bothering with at all. I wanted something compact, yet with decent sound because the two I was buying are going to elderly people in care facilities. In a small room space is limited. Based on other reviews I thought this would fit the bill. There is virtually no bass on this boombox. Again, I wasn't expecting thumping bass, and the people they are going to wouldn't care about that anyway. But it's just so tinny it sounds more like a toy. Additionally, the radio wouldn't pull in several strong radio stations in town - even with various adjustments to the antenna. So, that "feature" is essentially missing. I also expected, when the specs said it would play CD-R media that I could simply burn a CD-R of MP3s and play it - just like I do in my $50 car stereo and an older bookshelf system I have. Nope. While it may play CD-R media, that disc apparently must be burned with AIFF or other true "audio" files and probably burned as an audio disc. So, that whole end of things becomes a bit more work too. All around a disappointment. (Note: I'm talking about PURCHASED MP3 files from Amazon specifically for the purpose of burning a CD to give away. As a musician, I don't steal music. :-) ) Just to add a little inconvenience to the mix, too, Best Buy had zero of these out to sell, despite having 36 of them on hand. I checked online before I drove all the way across town, and it said "in stock" ready to pick up. But I found only an empty shelf space for this item. That meant waiting for the elusive help. The girl was nice enough, and retrieved two from the back quickly. I suppose this empty shelf could have been due to the Christmas shoppers, but the rest of the shelves looked quite well stocked, and there really weren't tons of people in the store at the time. What's more, Best Buy has made it far more difficult to choose ANY of their smallish boomboxes, as not a single one is open and on display to try out. They used to have a pretty large area with various models on display. I would take a couple CDs in, try the various models, try their radio, etc. I guess those days are gone . . . along with their music selection. That's nearly gone too. I was going to open one of them and try it out, but I looked around for an outlet and found nothing. So, drive all the way back across town, try it out and discover I just bought two pieces of electronic garbage. :-( Back to the store. Honestly, I hadn't been in Best Buy in awhile. It looks mainly like a phone/appliance store more than anything else now. A little of this and that thrown in and quite a few TVs at the back. But try to find the portable audio stuff and recorded music. It's a bit of a hunt.

A light and functional boombox for the price

I received a Victrola as a gift so I could play radio, c.d., and vinyl, and the supposed value was approximately $175. It worked less than a year, and with no warranty insurance extension purchased by the gift giver, it feels like a waste of a product. Considering where the company manufacturers this externally fun looking but internally inept audio product, and how also the U.S. doesn't provide replacement parts because of who sources the victrola, I decided to never spend more than $40 on another piece of audio junk made in the same country. A quality turntable is in my longview, but as someone who needs to listen to music every day, I opted to give this $29.99 Insignia boombox a whirl, so I could at least access radio and c.d., while the vinyl patiently awaits my budgeting it an outlet for source into my life. It has only been a month since I purchased this Insignia boombox, so it's dubious to whether a 4 star review will hold up past a year, but so far, it works, and it's very lightweight, and charges by plug in and battery both. I did purchase insurance at a reasonable cost of an additional $10, so that if it spontaneously fails in less than 2 years, I can exchange it for another one. So for $40 I know I will -at minimum- have c.d.'s playing and radio for two years or more. The sound is good and the speakers provide the fill of my home if I desire it. Added bonus : I recommend a device like this for anyone with rambunctious pets or small children. You can put it up high out of their reach and move it quickly if need be. It's also a relief to not have to sweat the possibility of more than a $40 loss if any damage to it occurs bc of little ones--four-legged, or two! :)

So, I figured I would purchase a simple cd player and radio for work so we wouldn't have to sit in silence and gradually loose our minds. This seemed to be perfect because Insignia had been pretty good over the years. After 2 televisions that were great, I figured this was a safe bet. Nope. Skips more than a hyperactive jumproper, on brand new cds. No scratches, just skips during every song. That was for the first few weeks, now it refuses to read any cds. The radio is just as good, considering it has worse reception than AT&T. This couldn't pick up a radio station if it was on top of the tower. Best part, it is in great condition considering we take care of our things here (the radio this replaced was a good 10 years old and just wore out). I assumed I would be getting a radio and cd player, but I instead got a piece of junk. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!

returned this item after a few days

A purchase and time wasted I wish I could take back. I bought this online 1-2 weeks ago. It arrived fairly quickly which was good. Upon arrival it did not have a power cord although the online listing says it includes one (and how would one connect a boombox to a power supply without one?! except by using batteries). I spent 45 minutes on the phone until someone agreed to send me the power cord at no extra charge. The cord came a few days later and was the WRONG CORD! Regardless, I used an old cord from another item and quickly learned the radio reception was awful inside my NYC apartment, even with the antenna fully extended. Granted it is located in an inside room not near a window however I had a previous boombox in there for years that worked fine until the antenna eventually broke off (and even minus the antenna, that old radio worked better than this one). I returned it to the store today and will start over on my hunt. Needless to say, a $30 radio was so not worth all that time wasted.

I ended up with a super price deal on this Insignia small CD-Radio player for the kitchen to help me be entertained while cleaning up. I found a place to plug it into the wall and it is easy to reach, to play and looks great ! It measures 5 inches tall, 10 inches across and 9 inches from the back to the front ( depth). The top has the CD player, the control buttons are mostly on the front and the volume rolling dial on the left side. The two big speakers are on the front. It has a sturdy handle that can be raised to carry the player securely. The headphone hole is on the back. The (Aux-IN) requires a 3.5 mm cable to an external music source, also on the back. It does require 8 C batteries, so include them, too, if this is something you want to use. I personally advise using it with a plug in wall power plug with the power cord that is included as often as possible to reduce battery drain. It is a super great CD player and radio, with an antenna and sounds wonderful. It is also very portable and lightweight.

    Round 2 of Toddler Use

We purchased this item as a replacement for a prior Insignia boombox radio that was kept in a toddler's bedroom. That one was pushed to the floor one too many times, and it eventually wouldn't turn on. After looking at the available selections (which equated to precisely *3*) in a display that appeared to have been hastily thrown together by the warehouse/merch staff who realized they had some random things to sell, we decided on this one. It was a downgrade from the previous unit because it did not have the iPood connection (that we never used), but still played CDs and the radio. It works for what it was intended for, but the controls on the front are barely marked; you have to bring the unit to eye-level to see what button does what. The main controls (power and volume) are tucked on the curve on the side, almost to the rear of the unit, which makes it extraordinarily difficult to turn on, adjust sound, and quietly slip out of a drowsy child's bedroom. It's only because I got this at a good price did I rate it as *average*, otherwise it would have been *fair* to *poor*.

We bought this for my folks. They didn't have anything that they can play CD's on and we wanted something small. Couldn't find a regualr radio that didn't have i-pod docking with CD player included, so we went to the stores to find something. Looked several places before finding this little gem...Perfect! Paid for it in SC and was able to pick a store close to Mom in Arizona for her to pick it up as a gift. What a great bunch of employee's at Best Buy on BOTH ENDS! Went off without a hitch and Mom is very happy! She said the sound is really great and it's easy to move without being cumbersome. She listens everyday to her Jersey Boys CD and Loves this radio!!! I don't see how you can miss. The price was half of what the competition wanted and much nicer and better quality. Buy it if you are looking for same features as we were. Can't miss!!!

I bought it as a replacement for my daughter's room. The sound quality wasn't good right out of the box. I didn't care that much because it was just to play her cds at night and I didn't expect top quality sound for that price. Within a week or so it started skipping. I finally got around to buying a memoriex cdplayer cleaner and ran it today. Still skips occasionaly and now makes a scratchy noise too. It looks like it is too late to return it even though I just bought it in June. She can't sleep without the music and even the three year old is commenting on the noises it makes. I'll need to get a new one...I'm so mad. The one we replaced this with last three years before it broke.

I bought this to play in my office, so I went for the cheapest thing I could get because I wasn't going to ever play it at a loud volume and I figured sound quality wouldn't be that big a deal. Turns out you CAN go too cheap. I knew I wouldn't get the best quality player, but this unit honestly doesn't do the minimum I would expect to even be called a CD player. One speaker gets louder than the other when you adjust the volume, and this is especially painful when you wear headphones. Even worse, if you get near the end of the CD it will randomly skip. This has happened with five or more of my CDs when I got past the 40th minute or so. I take good care of my CDs, and one of them was even brand new, so it's definitely the player and not any scratches on my discs. Just don't buy it.

This is a nice small radio CD player. Seems well built. The volume at its highest point isn't very loud, so if you want your kids to keep it low, they won't have another option anyway with this. That would have been ok, but, the sound isn't great and there is no way to change the bass, etc, to your preferences. The radio is fine, several stations came in in my below ground level apartment. My 20-month-old granddaughter loved it just fine, but if you want more bass or more treble, best get another machine. Would I recommend? it really depends who its for and their preferences. If you want low volume and don't care about base levels, then, yes, it seems like a fine item for its price.

My daughter bought this with her own money from Christmas and was very excited at first. She really thought hard between this one and one the was slightly more expensive. I think she is wishing she would have bought the more expensive one. This one is ok for cd playing but that is about it. The radio reception is spotty at best. When you try and tune the radio to a local station it doesn't hold the station as you can see on the digital display the frequency fluctuate up and down even if your finger is not on the tuner dial. Also when you get to a station it is full of static and crackle even with antenna up. Her old clock radio with no antenna had much better reception for 5 times less the cost. This is very frustrating for me and for her. The CD feature works ok but the volume control seems to be either quiet or loud with little in-between.

    Broken Right Out of Box

Got this for my 3 and 1.5 year olds to play CDs in their playroom. It is small, lightweight, with a simple design and controls. The CD cover only opens about 45 degrees with no button, just lift and push close. The CD fits tightly on the center mount of the turntable (which is good for skipping reasons, but bad for little hands). I tried it using one of the brand new CDs that I also bought to give to my toddlers. It skips sitting on the counter, 1 minute after taking it out of the box. The radio finds the local stations, but not very clearly (only other reference I have to compare is my car radio - which the same stations come in perfectly clear). Really upset - it was here in time to give as a Valentine's gift - and now I will not have something for them in time.

I bought this to put in my office to listen to all day. After about a week, I could not shut it off, I had to unplug it from the wall to get it to shut off. Finally, that "fixed itself" because I was able to shut it off and on again using the power button. Then today, I get to work, turn it on and begin working and it started shutting itself off. I turned it on and it was dead, I checked to see if it was plugged in and it was. After the third time of doing that, I turned it on again and it worked. A few minutes later it turned itself off again and was dead again. I plugged it into another outlet and it still doesn't work. It is dead. I bought this about 2 months ago and I am going to have to go out and buy another cd player/radio today. I do not want anything that expensive because I have had things stolen from me at work. I am very disappointed in this product.

My 13 year-old grandson loves to listen to music but didn't have a radio. He would take my phone and I wasn't getting any of my calls or texts because he always had my phone when he was playing his Xbox. I went on bestbuy.com and this was on sale and the tone is great it gets great reception he just loves it because he can play CDs. He loves the old music so I had some CDs from way back when and he plays those but I think he likes the radio part the best. it's not the biggest boombox in the world but the tone is great everything is great about it I would recommend this product.

    Terrible Product

I bought the Insignia CD Boombox to listen to CDs in the mornings when getting ready for work. Most of the time the sound produced through the speakers is fuzzy with static. If I turn the volume way down (barely audible), it is okay. One would think that a product called a boombox would be capable of producing a reasonably high volume with clarity. Then, too, the speakers should be designed to handle the power produced by the boombox. A small issue is that the CD player reads tracks and skips to the next even if a track bleeds into the next. I've never experienced that before. I bought this from Best Buy a year or so ago. It should be taken off the market.

We had bought this for my fiance to listen to relaxing music to sleep with. After a white noise machine was introduced, we used this for some noise to keep her bird engaged while we're at work. Now the day after the Polar Vortex of 2019, we had a pipe burst in our apartment, spraying water everywhere. This boombox, after we got the water shut off, was not only sitting in 1/2" of water but was being rained upon as well. And the thing still works. This is seemingly built like old school Nokia phones. Can't break it!

This little boombox does what it needs to do to make sure you have all the tunes you can use. If you're a simple human and just like to listen to the local radio waves, you can do that. Find your favorite AM/FM channels on the dial. If you're just a bit cooler of a human, then pull out that CD case and get to jamming with one of the awesome CDs you bought back in the day at WalMart, or BMG Music Club if you're old like me. If you're the coolest of humans, this little boombox will even let you plug in your devices (smartphone, iPad, mp3 player, etc.) and listen from that.

    Horrible FM reception

    Posted
    Chancaca

I returned this product after one week. The FM reception was the worst I've ever experienced with any portable radio. No matter the location -downtown, midtown, suburbs - the unit would/could not lock on to a station without horrible static or interference from neighboring stations. I tried all sorts of manipulations with the telescoping antenna, but the results were the same. Clearly they have used a most inferior FM receiver. I just purchased a Sony in similar price range and had none of these problems. Avoid this product if you care about the FM section of the bandwidth.

I use the boombox to listen to books on CD. Sometimes I like to back up and re-listen to a part I might not have heard well, but I find that a little difficult with this player. It backs up to a different track easily enough, but just to back up within a track is tricky and confusing. It didn't come with any instructions, so perhaps that is the problem. Also if I turn it off on track 32 out of 35 tracks, when I start again and want to find track 32, I can't just start at track 1 and reverse to track 32 like I could with my old player. I have to forward all the way to 32.

This was a second same model Insignia I bought. The first one, purchased 14 months ago recently stopped working. I love the small, light size and low price so I bought a second one, same model, thinking that the device failure was just a fluke. Too bad it was just outside the one year guarantee. Sure enough, a few hours of CD use on the new player and the CD mechanism froze and no longer worked. I returned it for a full refund and bought a Sony at three times the price and expect all will be fine.
