As a fan of legacy video game consoles, I love the idea of connecting old consoles to my new TVs to play. This converter however, is NOT that. This is a one way street to connect NEW devices (i.e. PS5, Xbox, etc.) to legacy displays (such as CRT TVs, or older projectors). SO DOUBLE CHECK YOUR NEEDS. This device takes a modern HDMI signal that converts to the old RCA (red, white and yellow) inputs (the younger generation just doesn’t know). So think, connecting a PS5, or Amazon Fire Stick which all use HDMI to an older TV or projector. This does not connect, say your old Xbox one to a brand new TV. If you have an older CRT or legacy monitor or projector, this device can breathe new life into it. It is simple plug and play. You run an HDMI cable into the convertor, and then plug your RCA cable into the other side and then connect to your display device. It does require USB power, so keep that in mind. It comes with a USB-C cable and power brick, and I found the USB-C cable to be plenty long, but luckily you can bring your own longer one if need be. The converter itself, while made of plastic, is plenty sturdy. And I very much appreciate the rubber feet on the bottom that do a pretty good job of keeping it in place (when there’s slack in the cable). The converter keeps a strong signal and I experienced no flicker. I was disappointed that it did not come with an RCA cable. Simply because most of us don’t keep them any more. Luckily for me, I keep one set of old legacy cables just in case. For me, I had an old projector that utilizes RCA cables. It allows me to play my games on a large screen. But keep in mind, you are sacrificing a lot of image quality when using this convertor. Text was blurry, but readable. Some people might enjoy the “older feel” of new games on old display tech, but I’m not one of those people. I prefer the highest resolution. But, for those with older display tech, or recipients of a hand me down, it’s a great way to keep those in service. I think the best use case scenario is watching a streaming stick on an older projector. The image quality won’t be 4K by any stretch, but it’s certainly passable - especially if you’re watching on a big projector. Bottom line is that it does what it’s set out to do, and does it in a simple and straightforward manner. This might be a little more expensive than no name brands on Amazon, but you get peace of mind getting it from Best Buy should something happen to it. Just please double check the ports to make sure you’re getting what you need.

Its great to be able to reuse and repurpose older electronics like monitors and TVs. Many did not have newer video connectors for HDMI. So, Insignia's convertor box is an economical way to bring new life to older equipment. The unit itself is only 3" by 3" x 1". It uses a USB to USB-C cable included in the kit. You will need your own RED YELLOW and WHITE RCA cables. It also has the required power transformer. Setup is super simple. Every jack is nicely labeled next to the ports. I had a few monitors that I couldn't see recycling because their video quality was so good. Its great to have an option to put them to a new use. Like I stated earlier, there is not much to using the box. Just plug and play. That's it. Video and left and right audio. Some older VCRs etc., can make use of the output from a laptop or PC. Newer video game boxes can also output to older monitors. I can also envision using the converter box as an extra way to use monitor/TVs without having switchboxes if the monitor has the RCA inputs available. Not long ago, we were looking for devices to go from RCA to HDMI. Now we can go full circle!

Use New Devices with Old TVs we all have.

TLDR: This enables using a new HDMI DVD player or other HDMI only output device with an older RCA type jacks only input televisions. Includes a power supply and a 6 foot long USB-A to USB-C power cable since it needs wall outlet power for the circuitry. Circuitry is the term for the internal components inside the black case that enable the conversion. Basically, my TLDR recap says it all. Don't just throw out your old TV with RCA input jacks (millions of those devices have RCA input jacks). Simply use the existing RCA cables you have (the ones with the red, white and yellow plugs) from those devices into the RCA output jacks of this Insignia converter. Then plug in your HDMI to HDMI cable from your device into this Insignia device to use your old TV. Or plug in your FireStick or Roku TV streaming device into the HDMI input of this device and use your old TV with your old RCA plug cables for streaming content. Switch using your TV remote control to that RCA input jack and you will be able to play the content on your old analog tube TV (or even an early flat panel TV that has no HDMI inputs). There is also a tiny LED power indicator light. It works. It makes no hum sound, almost no heat, and uses almost no power from the small AC adapter. You can hide the device in a shelf below the TV or hide it behind the TV since it weighs almost nothing so you could hide it using some sticky velcro tape or a twist tie from a bread bag to the cables behind the TV to make it neater. It has no power switch since it has very low power consumption. It has a 1 year warranty. Insignia is the Best Buy store brand.

Serves its purpose for older projector

This is a pretty straightforward, no frills converter. It’s important to remember that this one converts HDMI to RCA, not the reverse. I needed it to connect an old projector to a PS5 for a campfire movie night, and it served its purpose. Of course, it’s not HDR quality so some of the clarity isn’t there, but audio was good. Just plug the HDMI cable for the more modern device on one side and the yellow/red/white RCA on the other side, connect it to its power source and you're set. The Insignia converter is USB powered and came with the USB cable and power brick. There is no on/off switch, but it has a little LED power indicator light so you know that it’s powered. It’s a simple plug and play device and is small enough to fit in the palm of my hand. The converter is lightweight so I was able to use a strip of Velcro to hold it on the side of the projector to keep it tidy. If you need to connect a newer device like a gaming unit or laptop to an older model TV, monitor, or projector, then this should work. I do think it should have a cheaper price point though.

I got this converter to run some of my newer electronics on my older crt tv's, namely a roku. The older models of roku models used to do 480i, but updates made that go away. I do not know why I didn't get this before, but this works like a charm. It automatically downgrades the picturecto 480i. The picture quality is goodm This in the box comes with usb a brick, usb a to usb c cord, and the converter. It connected easily and worked right away. The only thing that occurs once in a while is I have to unplug and replied the hdmi cable because the colors get red or green or goes to classic snow. Generally it's rare unless I bump the tv area. I used this on my color 13 inch cut, but I also used it on my 6 inch black and white crt that is new enough to have rca jacks. I will include photos. Now in my basement spare bedroom I have roku for my guests. I am very pleased with this item and can only give it 5 stars and I do reccomend this to anyone needing it. I am likely going to buy another one as a spare.

Surprised how well this works. I used a pc and an nvidia sheild. Supports multiple resolutions and scaled well. Works exactly as expected and no noticable input lag. If this was 10 dollars cheaper i would have given it 5 stars.

    RCA / HDMI Converter

Unfortunately I had to return this RCA to HDMI converter because it didn't work with my new Amazon Fire TV and the DVD/VCR unit that I had. Maybe it was because my unit was too old (The label on the back said March 2010.) I tried it with several sets of RCA cables and the HDMI cable is brand new so it must be the unit. Maybe it would work with a newer unit.

Connecting HDMI streaming device to older analog TV. Works well, there is a little bit of signal noise in the picture but nothing too distracting for an older TV

This did not work to connect our old (RCA only) VCR/DVD player to a newer (HDMI or RCA) TV. I believe it might be that the source device (VCR/DVD player) has to use a more advanced (or equal) level connection (HDMI is more advanced than RCA) than the receiving device (TV). We tried plugging this in the other direction (HDMI on TV with RCA on player) and got "no signal". Perhaps if we had a player with HDMI and connected to RCA jacks on the TV, this converter would have worked.
