    into the woods

Into the Woods debuted on Broadway in October 1987, where it was greeted with great enthusiasm by critics and audiences alike. The narrative is based on four fairy tales, using versions by the Brothers Grimm (Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood and Rapunzel). The plot blends the familiar tales with an original story about a baker and his wife and their attempts to undo a witch’s spell. The musical boasts music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, the most respected theatre composer of the last 60 years, and a book by his frequent collaborator, James Lapine. Historically, fairy tales by the Grimm Brothers have been viewed as being darker and more realistic than versions of the same stories written by other authors. Consequently, and because Mr. Sondheim is seen as one of the most (if not the most) challenging composers of modern theatre, it must be noted that Into the Woods is not a piece that was conceived with an audience of young children in mind. Rather, it is a sophisticated adult experience, a fairy tale for grownups if you will. While some of the darker and more provocative aspects of the story have been muted for the film version, the fact that the film has been produced by Disney has led many parents to assume that this is a film for small children. It is not. It is a moral fable for grownups; most children under the age of fifteen or so (unless they are very mature) will not be able to appreciate the story, and many parents of small children will find the material unsuitable.

Great adaptation of the Broadway Show

All of the wonderful Stephen Sondheim music is in this movie adaptation of the original musical. Meryl Streep added an emotional element as her motherly instincts came out. Overall a very faithful version of the original I fell in love with. The story is only slightly weaker by not including the Narrator/Mysterious Man/Baker's Father in the story. Being a movie it allowed for the addition of other minor characters to shine such as Christina Baranski as Cinderella's stepmother. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I am not a big fan of movie musicals (I'd rather see one live) but this movie is truly spectacular. If you have read any of the Brothers' Grimm tales, this movie actually follows them a lot more closely than any other movie I've seen - kind of dark and gross at times, but still very interesting and entertaining to me. To be honest, the story line of the movie is not my favorite, but I still recommend this to anyone who's into the fairy tale kind of take on things.

This product is well made, durable and reliable. I have had good experiences with this manufacturer. I recommend this manufacturer and this particular product. This product does exactly what I need it to do. Super easy to use. I have used other manufacturers in the past but have not always been satisfied. I am happy with this product.

Really liked this movie, different yet entertaining take on fairy tale classics mixing up familiar characters that inter lace with different stories, really well done, great songs and mood was kept lightly with a bit of humor here and there. Not too short and not too long, very enjoyable. Purchased in store and did a price match to Amazon for 19.99 for the blu ray very quickly with no hassles, was a buying experience.

I really like Into the Woods. Having seen the play on Broadway many years ago, when it first opened, I would have loved to have seen the original cast reunited for the film version. Meryl Streep's witch pales in comparison to that of Bernadette Peters, IMHO, and Johnny Depp's appearance is pointless. But Emily Blunt, James Corden and Chris Pine are a delight to watch, and the music is very catchy!

We found it hard to watch. The large amount of singing made it hard to engage with the movie.

Transitioning a musical to film is always a mixed bag of tricks. The format and pacing has to dramatically change or else you try to stay truer to the musical format. Into the Woods opts for the latter, which is fine but ends with lesser movie and you'll see a dramatic shift in the story as the acts change. Still, Sondheim's music, the acting and the cinematography are reason enough to check out this film.

Just My Opinion, Take it for What it's Worth!

I personally didn't enjoy this movie. However, that doesn't mean you won't. You'll just have to form your own opinion! I thought it had a little too much adult content to be a kids/Disney movie. Having said that, it's important to note I haven't seen the original, so I'm not sure how similar this is to it. Prince Charming cheats on Cinderella with the the baker's wife, and needless to say, the baker's wife cheats on her husband. The word "r@pe" is used and Johnny Depp is just plain creepy as the wolf. I mean the kind of creepy that just may give you a nightmare or three. I'm not going to give anymore spoilers, but I wanted to share my opinion. If you're considering buying this movie (musical), I would recommend renting it first to make sure you think it's worth owning. I didn't, and I regret it. You and I may have completely different tastes, so you could end up loving it-- but I didn't.

I bought this combo pack for my girlfriend, who really loves the musical. I took her to see it in theatres and it was quite enjoyable. This comes with a Blu-Ray disc and a digital copy (with Disney Movies Anywhere) but does not come with a DVD disc. I like having the digital copy for convenience, especially since this doesn't come with a DVD and I don't have a Blu-Ray disc reader in my computer (we use our Xbox One for Blu-Ray watching) the redemption for the digital copy is easy, even with Disney Movies Anywhere's site (which is not exactly great) and this combo pack is worth the price.

Your satisfaction with this movie will probably be directly proportional to how much you know and love the original. If you love the musical then this is a nice abridgment but frustrating in all that is left out...even though the Great Stephen Sondheim has assisted in the project and does endorse it. The cast is fine and what is left of the original retains some of its power.

This is a great movie for the entire family. It is certainly a musical, but even if you do not typically like musicals, I think you will enjoy this. The musical numbers are very well done. It is also full of big-name movie stars who are great to see in a different element than you might expect from them. Blu-ray quality as always is amazing and soundtrack is great. Disney has done it again!

This is a good musical. I didn't like it at first. Chris Pine singing kind of ruined it for me the first time. I figured $10 at time of purchase i'd give it another shot. I'm glad i did. I actually muscled through the oddness of Chris Pine not in an action role perse and payed more attention. Turned out to be enjoyable after all.

As the movie began, I was not expecting a film-musical. My ignorance, noted. The cast was exceptional and mostly did a good job, but you anticipate my negatives. The overall performance did not sustain itself. Johnny Carson was famous for his quote, "If you buy the premise, you buy the bit." Despite all the talent and the excellence of the filmography, it didn't make the cut.

We went to this movie in the theater not knowing much about it. We were very impressed and really enjoyed this movie. Great musical numbers also. My only criticism is that it went a little too long. I thought it was finished about 75% into the movie, and it really could have ended there. Overall, we enjoyed it...even our two younger children did...so we purchased the DVD.

The singing was great. The plot was fairly good, though it's not the happily ever after that I was thinking it was going to be, but still pretty good. Also I thought this would be the Blu Ray, dvd, digital copy, but it's not, it's just Blu Ray and digital copy combo pack. Probably should have read more carefully I guess. But other than that, I'm happy with my purchase.

I first saw the broadway version on PBS when i was around 10 and loved it but then i sadly forgotten what it was about until i saw the movie and i fell in love with it again. Stephen Sondhiems fairytale musical shines in this film version with a stellar cast including the amazing Meryl Streep as the witch. everyone in the film did a fantastic job. my only complaints were the deletion of songs from the original broadway play and the forced second half other then that, it is a wonderful film for the family but be warned, the second half is very dark and is not for younger kids. a must!

If you're expecting a Disney musical for kids, think again. This is an adult musical with adult themes. By adult I don't mean violence or language. Adult in this instance means that all is not sunny and light, but dark, humorous, satirical and truer to the original intent of the fairy tales as they were originally written. It's a musical that will make you think about possessive mothers, fatherless men and boys, the unintended consequences of magic, and narcissistic princes. It's about love. loss, and embracing life no matter the odds and heart break.

We enjoyed the musical but I think younger families would enjoy more. It was entertaining & not to scary for young children. I would watch it again just to verify I didn't miss something the 1st time I watched it. As a grandmother, I would recommend viewing it when young children will be watching it. It was certainly a different twist on old fairy tales.

Loosely based on various fairytale stories all twisted together in a way that makes all the stories fit together with a "cause and effect" style scenario. Some of the songs are a bit too much for the movies but that is just personal taste based on my families reaction to it. I would still recommend it as the performance is very well done!
