    A bit overdone...

I love Darlene Love. On of my all time favorite songs is He's A Rebel. I love Steve Van Zandt, aka Miami Steve aka Little Steven. His album Men WIthout Women easily makes my top 50 albums of all time, and I love the first three Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes albums, all of which he produced, and featured Steve as the primary songwriter. Which leads me to this album. It's over produced, the song selection is not worthy of Love's voice and that hurts the impact of the album overall. It reminds me of the bloated sounding production on Steve and bruce's "reunion" album with Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, Better Days. That album also suffered from that over produced, large, bloated sound. Music like this, singers like Darlene Love, and for that matter, Southside Johnny, deserve a sound that is less cluttered, less stadium-sized, more small nightclub-sized. The Hearts of Stone album, or for that matter, Men Without Women. That sound. More focused. This things sounds like Jon Bon Jovi produced it. Not Little Steven. It's not all bad. Her version of River Deep, Mountain High kills like Ike & Tina's was supposed to do so long ago. But, in the end, this is not an album that will spin endlessly on my turntable or in my CD player. I just don't like the way it sounds. And Darlene Love sounds like she is battling with the largeness of the music on just about every song. Maybe that's just how she sings these days. That's unfortunate. I know she's no longer Phil Spector's secret weapon. I just wish Steve had made more effort to downsize the production and make it sound like it should sound rather than making a record that suits today's bloated standards. Again, I love Darlene Love. I just don't love this record.

Little Steven does a fantastic job of introducing Darlene Love to a new audience. Her voice sounds as great as ever. She handles the new songs well, and does an excellent job with the Tina Turner cover. I'm glad I bought it.

It's about time we got a solo album from Darlene. Produced and arranged by Steve Van Zant, perfect. Sounds like she's backed by the Asbury Jukes! Her voice is still there, srong and straight. She's a belter! Keep on rockin'...
