My computer opens a couple of drives for the device and I have to close it down every time I let the laptop go into idle mode.

USB-C adapters are incredibly frustrating as the quality is all over the place. I ended up getting a cheaper adapter online that is much cooler even with PD. I am seeing some that include a power supply too, which would be great for me and traveling. The second-gen units should be a lot better with up to 10G USB 3.

I'm very sorry for the inconvenience that this has caused you.
It is expected that the JCD383 USB Type-C Mini Dock will get very warm-to-moderately hot, but is certainly no need for alarm.
We have stressed tested the JCD383 USB Type-C Mini Dock and have been able to determine that the average maximum operational temperature for the adapter is 106 °F / 41 °C, while the adapter is under full-load or being used continuously for periods > 1hr.
Please also take into consideration, the ambient temperatures will also affect the temperature that the adapter, as well as the computer, will operate at.
However, if you are noticing that the JCD383 is exceeding the average temperature of 135 °F/57 °C, for periods > 30 minutes, your product may be faulty and may be needing to be replaced.
In our testing, we have not found the JCD383 to run anything higher than 112°F/44 °C, for periods <10 minutes.

Great hub for my chromebook

Great adapter for your Mac

Although the JCD383 is capable of becoming warm due to electricity running through it, it can reach higher than normal operating temperatures in rare cases.
