A gritty woman's perspective on tropes of the western genre, a lean action drama that is sparse yet sympathetic, and laconic but simmers with deep emotion.

Objectively speaking, I think this film merits recommendation in most regards. It was believably told and concise enough to hold your attention all the way through. The cast did a terrific job. Though, while I'm a fan of McGregor, I felt he was miscast in his role. But that's a subjective criticism that didn't seriously detract from enjoying the film; I almost didn't even recognize him at first.
My only complaint with this film and the reason I didn't find it very memorable, was the rather droll vernacular. The verbal portion, what was spoken, had little spark or poetic finesse. Compulsorily conveying what was essential is the most it offered or even attempted. Optimistically, my guess is that was the aim, maybe for authenticity's sake. Either that or the film's origins were no more fleshed out than an idea when it went into production and the writer(s) was/weren't allotted the time to really exploit their craft. The result: a solid western, without any real panache or inspired sense of purpose, but a well told, intriguing story none-the-less.

I saw it at the movies, I went in with low expectations, but found it to be like the classic westerns I grew up with. It had it all, the good, the bad, and the ugly, Revenge, Lost love, Redemption, and of course the classic gun battle where our heroes face overwhelming odds and (spoiler alert) live to tell about it. Oscar contender no, but anyone who likes classic westerns will like this.

I bought this movie because of it's a Natalie Portman film. I admit that her performance could be better in this movie, and many parts seem to be chappy at best. However, it's quite entertaining and I enjoy the follow of the story. I think that I will watch it again sometimes. I saw some negative review on the internet but I do not feel this is a bad movie at all.

A tough but realistic story of 1870 New Mexico,

The films cinematography is focused on the vistas of Central and Northern New Mexico, the story-line is well paced, and flashbacks are incorporated to more effectively tell the saga. The tension between the films two principle characters – Natalie Portman (Jane) & Joel Edgerton (Dan) – makes for an interesting and captivating view. It is “packed” with both action – you won’t fall asleep during its view – and although fleeting there are some worthy “tender-moments.” This Western is in the old style – it is a tough but realistic story with an ending you will be both surprised and pleased with. A Great View! I will see it again at least a 2nd time – perhaps more!

Enjoyed the movie's plot. Strong woman with difficult past links up with man hanging around with the bad guys the redeems himself when seeing real injustice playing out. Tension among main characters plays out to a positive ending.

This is a great western. It has been a while since the westerns of years ago we placed on the Big Screen. Natalie Portman and McGregor had a great deal of chemistry. Great movie and I would recommend it to all of my friends.

The story is good with a few minor surprises and solid acting. The movie is a little slow at the beginning. The movie picks up though, it come as a breath of fresh air, after slogging our way through the first two acts.

The movie was worth buying. Good plot with lots of action. The only drawback to me was that some of the scenes were to dark. Sometimes it was a little hard to see what was going on. Over all 4 stars

I wasn't sure about a western starring Natalie Portman, but was pleasantly surprised. She is a good actress and pulled it off. An enjoyable 1.5 hours!

Gave this to my dad as a birthday present as he loves westerns. He said it had a lot of action and was violent. Maybe too violent.

A Great story line, something not done before. Resourceful would be a word to describe a woman who took care of business.
