    Good shotgun microphone by Joby

This shotgun microphone is pretty good. It is a good solution if you want fuller and crisper sound that you don't get from your standard camera microphone. The Wavo Pro is a great option for content creators with a very professional feel to it. There are a couple of features I really like about this microphone. The built in Active Noise Reduction is incredible and makes your recordings sound even better. You can manage the audio coming through the mic with a cell phone app. There is an extra microphone port so you can add an additional microphone for a different sound direction or lapel mic, makes it great for interview type recordings. I did a distance test and I felt around being 10 feet away from the mic is when I started to pick up ambient noise. It has a built in rechargeable battery which lasts about 50 hours from full power. Out of the box, you get the Wavo Pro, a wind screen, a wind jammer (dead cat) 3.5mm TRS cable, and a USB-C to USB-A cable. The Joby Wavo Pro shotgun microphone retails for around $300 usd. I find it a little pricey compared to others on the market but the features it has make up for it. I would definitely recommend this to any content creator.

Earlier this year I purchased the Sony RX10 IV, and I’m enjoying getting to know it. For me, this is the first camera that allows me to capture both still photos and videos. Hoping to avoid “tinny” audio, I started looking at external shotgun microphones, and decided to try the Joby Wavo Pro with active noise reduction (ANR). So, let’s see if the Joby Wavo is a worthy upgrade. Taking the Wavo out of the box, the first thing I noticed was its solid build. The microphone has a metal body, and comes out of the box with a foam shield and an additional “furry” wind shield that you can add as needed. The microphone is mounted using a shock mount that helps eliminate extraneous noises that may be picked up while moving around. There are also two cables in the box: a USB-C charging cable and 3.5 mm audio cable. The unit looks very nice on top of the camera, and gives it a “professional videographer” look. The microphone attaches via the camera’s hot shoe with a metal mount. There is also a jack for connecting a second microphone. I did not have the ability to test this, but I appreciate knowing that I could add a second lapel mic if I ever need to do that. For comparison, I recorded all my clips using both the internal microphone and then the Wavo. The RX10 IV has a surprising good microphone, but it does sound a bit “tinny”. I recorded at close range inside my living room, as well as in a medium-sized auditorium. On all the clips, the Wavo recorded much richer sound, with more bass and less of that “tunnel” sound. However, I also noticed an increase in hiss, which was not so good. Maybe I just need to fiddle with some settings… The first thing I did was to decrease the sound levels in the camera itself. This helped somewhat, but only because everything, including the sound I was recording, was decreased. The Wavo has buttons for increasing levels for each channel, and these are nice to have. Two settings are available: +10 dB and +20 dB. Each channel is independent, so you can increase each one as needed. I tried various combinations of levels between the Wavo and the camera, but wasn’t able to successfully decrease the amount of hiss that was picked up. For recording speech in a very quiet environment, I’m not sure this would be acceptable. Next, I turned my attention to the settings I could control in the app. The app connects to the microphone via Bluetooth, or at least it’s supposed to do that. The app would repeatedly report that it had found the microphone, but would then tell me it was lost and I should search again. When it does connect, you can set the levels, EQ and turn on or off the ANR feature. I can’t be certain, but I think that ANR contributes to the hiss I mentioned above, as it sounds slightly better when it’s turned off in a quiet environment. There is also an awesome feature that allows you to record a second “safe” audio track that can be used if the main track gets distorted. This is a very thoughtful feature to have that might rescue you if your main track is bad and you can’t have a “do over”. Unfortunately, these nifty features might not be available when you need them. I have not been able to figure out what the magic needs to be in order to successfully connect, as I sometimes give up after trying to connect 10-15 times, and other times it’ll connect right away. Especially at this price range, I find it unacceptable that some key features may or may not be available, depending on whether I can get a successful connection. For example, if I’ve previously managed to turn on ANR via the app, but then want to turn it off, I may or may not be able to do that. This was extremely frustrating. For me, it comes down to this question: is the improvement in sound quality worth the price tag, given that it also comes with some pretty major deficiencies? While I don’t think the sound from the internal mic on my camera is great, I’m not sure I can say that the Wavo provides enough total benefit to justify its $300 price tag. Either make all the features available through dedicated buttons or ensure that the Bluetooth connectivity works every time. I have a lot of Bluetooth devices, some of which only cost $15, and connecting is not a problem for any of them. If Joby updates the app and/or the microphone’s firmware, perhaps these issues can be alleviated. As it stands right now, you’ll have to ask yourself if better sound quality alone is reason enough to buy the Wavo, or if you might be able to get that from one of the many cheaper alternatives.

The Joby Wavo Pro Microphone captures a better sound quality than the build in microphone. The microphone is Bluetooth enabled and allows for an application on your smart phone to adjust the settings. There was a problem with the app staying connected to microphone. After updating the microphones firmware set up of the microphone is straight forward using the app. The battery life is 60 hours with a reduction if utilizing the noise reduction feature, which I suggest you do use. The noise reduction software greatly reduces camera movement noise and that of the surrounding area. The microphone picks up voices from both in front of and behind the camera. The microphone is easily set up by using the buttons on the microphone itself. The buttons are large enough and properly spaced out to eliminate accidental pressing. The application needs updating, and the unit needs to address the Bluetooth connection problems. The microphone itself is a five-star item. The application however takes away from this. Being for warned I would recommend the Joby Wavo Pro to family and friends.

Great Micro-Phone IOS App doesn't work!

The Joby Wavo Pro Shotgun Microphone is overall a great microphone. It does have a few drawbacks, however, the overall sound quality is magnificent. First and foremost the great. All that was needed out of the box was to charge it for a short time ( I don't remember how long but it was way less than my camera needed to charge). I then connected it to my camera utilizing the hot shoe. I connected the cord to the camera and turned on the microphone and it was working flawlessly. The sound quality is absolutely amazing. The instructions that came with the microphone are somewhat informative, but they aren't great instructions, your better bet if you're having problems is to search for how-to videos on how to use the microphone. I did try to utilize their IOS App but it failed miserably. As in that is the only reason why it's missing a star is that the app is treacherous. It found the mic, then it stated it couldn't find the mic and it would just do a vicious cycle of finding and not finding the microphone.

    An App Update Should Help

This is a great microphone when you are not trying to do anything extra with it that requires the app. I say this because, as many others online have experienced, I find it hard to connect to the mic via Bluetooth to utilize the app, so I have given up on the app for now. As for actually using the mic, it easily connects to a DSLR camera. It has an LED that allows you to verify that the power is on and that it is actually hearing you from in front of the camera, which is great, especially if you are a one-person content creation team. Something interesting this mic does that I haven't experienced before is that it records a second audio track a -10db from the standard audio track. This is done in case loud noises come into your recording all of a sudden. It is not something that I will use, but I could see it being incredibly useful if you film live events or loud equipment. The battery life on this is absolutely amazing, it is advertised at 60 hours, 50 hours with active noise cancelling activated. I can confirm that it easily handles a full day of recording, which should be more than adequate for pretty much any user at any level of use. I expect there will be an update to the app soon, but I didn't feel like I was missing out on anything for my uses, which is primarily recording instructional videos for students.

    Good Sound From This Mic

This Joby Wave Pro Shotgun Microphone kit is excellent add-on for my Canon M50 mirrorless camera. Whether I want to vlog some selfie videos or use in place of the built in mic it does an outstanding job. Sound quality is outstanding and adds a more "professional" feel to the video I shoot. Just slip in to the hot shoe connector on top, attach the wind screen, plug it into the audio in port and you're good to go. There is a companion iOS app to adjust setting but if I'm being honest I only used it once and did not find it at all helpful to me. It's not too big which means you can keep in your camera bag at all times for those "just in case" moments which came in hande more than once for me. I've not been much into using my camera to blog because I don't take it with me everywhere but I can see me making the effort to start at least carrying my camera bag in my car with me on a regular basis just so I can have more professional looking AND sounding video for my website. Oh, and let's not forget active noise cancellation for when you are in an urban environment and don't want all that city noise distracting from you content. Overall this is a great shot gun mic.

Versatile mic with great recording quality!

When filming high definition video, the finished product is never good when the audio doesn't match the same high standard as the video. In comes the Joby Wavo Pro to help the content creator solve that issue! This microphone attaches to most digital camera and video recorders. It has an adjustable base so that it can be fit onto many different models of recording devices. It is super easy to know your battery life and to also know the audio levels incoming into the mic. When it detects sound, the colors on the mic change to let you know how loud it is coming into the mic. The mic also keeps a "back-up" copy of your audio that is a little lower in volume. This is nice in case of an unexpected audio spike! There is also an app the user can download to their smartphones. This allows the user to fine tune any audio adjustments on the microphone. I also like that the camera comes built onto a shock mount. This helps keep any bumps or inadvertent "thuds" from messing with your audio. The active noise reduction works pretty well, but I will have to use the mic a lot longer to be sure it is completely effective. All in all, this mic is great for the content creator. It is so versatile and can be used with many different devices. Take your audio to the same level as your high definition video! Your viewers will love it!

Avoid this product and go with something else...

Where to start. I bought this product 2 months ago and have been giving it my honest try and there are too many critical things that I cannot overlook to recommend it. Here are the cons: 1) Faint clicking noise in the audio recordings: I have tried two cameras with multiple gain settings (GH5ii/ZV1) adjusting the onboard camera gain settings and the mic itself (ANR active/inactive) and I can't get it to go away. If it weren't for this I could stomach the other shortcomings but clean audio should be priority number one. 2) Sometimes mic wont turn on: There are some instances where I found that the mic will straight up not turn on. I have found that the auto on/off feature that turns the mic on/off when the camera power is on/off is the culprit. If you cant turn your mic on with this enabled you have to plug in the mic and charge it and turn on the mic from there to get it working again. I encountered this issue shooting in the field and the mic was rendered useless for that shoot. Now I am left just leaving the auto on/off feature completely disabled to avoid this issue. 3) Bluetooth connectivity is awful: A lot of the video reviews that are still up mention bluetooth connectivity being finicky. I thought maybe it was user error but for the life of me I cannot get the phone app to connect to the mic. It will maybe connect after 5 times if I am lucky. This is the only way to turn on/off the active noise cancellation. I will try resetting my phone, turning bluetooth on and off on my phone, turning the mic on and off and then turning on bluetooth. For a million dollars I could not even say I could make this mic connect two my phone two times in a row successfully. There are some pros after all of this but these should not matter due to the fact the first 3 issues make this product un-buyable but here they are. The sound is actually decent (sans faint clicking), I like that you can input another audio source via 3.5mm jack and record on the second channel (main reason why I bought this mic), and the battery from what I can tell lasts a decent while. Other than that go with something else.
