Great Anime, Good First English Release

This release covers the first season of Jo Jo's Bizarre Adventure, including the Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency sagas. This anime series is excellent and worth looking into for anyone that enjoys the genre. This is the first release of WB's dubbing. I was fearful at first, but the english dub is actually quite good (although I am still in love with the Japanese Audio). The series takes place in England, so the attempted English accents threw me off a bit at first, but I really enjoyed it. The subtitles are modeled very closely after the English dub and are fantastic. This release holds 26 episodes over three discs. It comes in a standard DvD box with a good quality sleeve. I was expecting this season to come with an optional Blu-Ray release, but there is only DvD. This season of the anime did originally had enough quality to warrant a Blu-Ray high definition release, but I digress. The biggest problem of the set is the DvD menu. It is a low quality menu and does not seem to have music from the series. The menu is close to "boot-legging" standards, with grainy picture and odd music choice. The release only features the anime itself with no extras, such as a view into the opening/closing, or director notes, something I rather enjoy. The only other issue I have is the lack of English subtitles for the Japanese audio track. There are often minor differences between the Japanese and English dubs, making it necessary for a true Japanese viewing. The opening and ending songs did not receive subtitles or a translation either. The openings should have had an English translation subtitle. The ending is in English, but did not receive subtitles either. Overall, the picture is good and had an excellent transition into English. While there are a few problems with the release, the anime itself is good enough to overcome these issues. All in all, I am very much looking forward to the follow-up season, Stardust Crusaders. Pros: Amazing Anime Content English/Japanese Audio Decent English Dubbing Good English Subtitles (Also in Spanish!) Decent Picture Quality Gripes: Dreadful Menu Screen Opening and Ending Songs not Translated/Subbed No Japanese Subtitles No Direct English Translation Subtitles Lack of a Blu-Ray option release No Extras on Disc
