It’s hard to start out a review for Joker without simply stating how incredibly beautiful the film is, as well as it was a story that was absolutely necessary of being told - even if the film were to strip away all the Joker make-up and facade. This project is less about the Joker as a character for the comic books, if a character at all. What Phillips and Phoenix seemed to want to highlight more than anything is the human character, one that is mentally broken in a way that he many never be able to comeback. But we watch and wish the best for him no matter what, even if we do know where the climax is heading. And all of this behavior is brought on by some relevant issues based around healthcare, and more so those with mental issues. How much ignorance and damage can a person’s brain be put through before they break? It’s that fear and excitement that drives a man down so far that when he stands, his new name is Joker, and he’s completely ready to burn the world down with this state of mental metamorphosis. While the film might be a bit brutal from some, every bit of the story is trying relay matters that are much bigger than anything a film could solve. Where the film is heavy, Phillips and Phoenix are there to ensure their comedic sensibilities forward in the best way. Just making for an overall fantastic film, one I think is far more important than credit given, but there’s a great support system who also understand what the film is about, and they support it in all its proper way.

I've waited for this movie to be made for a very long time. As a huge Batman fan or anyone who is, you also have to love the villains. There are many villains to choose from but iconically Joker is the Yang to Batman's Ying. This story follows its own path to other Joker origin stories, but it does an amazing job of capturing how a man (like Batman himself) can be turned into something else because of the life experiences he has and how society can manipulate your perception of reality. I can't speak enough about Joaquin Phoenix acting & transformation in this story. But what really stuck with me and I could play it over and over in my head was the beautiful and saddening score of this movie! OMG! That Cello is amazing and I know I am going off the deep end talking about a score over the acting but that is just how good this movie is!!! From the acting, to the locations, cinematography all the little details all the way down to the score! Everything about this movie was so thought out and perfected, I can not find anything I do not like about it. Mind you Joker is a psychopath remorseless brutal killer... yet in this film I find myself liking and even feeling sad for Joker. Thats how good this film is.... don't come into this expecting a Marvel comics film, this is a DC comics fill for sure! I will watch this movie multiple times over and over throughout the years. Enjoy

This movie was so well done! GREAT acting by the lead actor, Joaquin Phoenix, VERY good soundtrack, well thought out sets, and a script that does a great job exploring a possible origin for the Joker. Keep in mind that this is not a DC Superhero/Marvel Superhero or John Wick type fight/smash/beat-em-up/fast-action movie. I mention this because of the people I talked to that watched the movie, the few who didn't like it always mentioned the same thing..."it was boring, not a lot happened." This movie is a slow burn. This is an exploration of (and maybe an insight into) one character's progress from a no-name, basically unwanted and unloved individual into an individual who will be known far and wide in the DC comics universe. Aside from an exploration into a well-known DC comics villain, this movie also reveals real-world problems and shows how these real-world problems can negatively affect individual people and the societies they live in. Overall, this movie is a must see if you like DC comics characters, if you like watching a really good character progression and exploration, or if you just want to watch an actor completely own the character he/she is portraying. Don't expect non-stop action. Do expect a slow burn that builds up into a final explosion!

With all of the constant flash, bang, and effects of modern comic book movies, it’s truly refreshing to see a deep dive character piece centered around one of comics’ most famous villains: the Joker. While many may not like that it’s not accurate to the comics, I think most would agree that Joaquin Phoenix’s performance is a runaway success and the film breaks new yet familiar ground with its aesthetic and tone. Seeing this movie on 4K UHD is the best way to experience it as the black levels and contrast of the darker scenes is gorgeous and the reds, greens, and neons of other scenes truly pop off the screen. The score is also a truly amazing triumph that captures the essence of the character and the film. This is 100% worth buying and adding to your collection. There isn’t a whole lot in terms of special features, but what they do include covers the segments of the film you want to learn more about. It also comes with a free digital redemption code which, when you redeem it, the iTunes version includes an additional special feature of a film commentary track!

The 4K bluray is drop dead gorgeous. This uses the Ari Alexa 65 (6.5K) with a 4K native digital intermediate. Add to that you get Dolby Atmos, in so many words of exclamation this is the perfect ULTRA HD EXPERIENCE. Oh yeah did I mention that the movie is great??!! Who would have thought that the director of The Hangover and Old School would knock this nightmarish drama out of the park! Those of you that are foolish enough to go into this thinking it is some superhero action adventure are going to be seriously let down. You cannot go into this movie with arms crossed and mind closed expecting this to be just super neat experience. You must EXPERIENCE this emotional roller coaster to its crescendo ending. This is not only a great acting nod, but it also is a very personal journey. After seeing this in the theater I can say with a complete certainty that this is one that you can duplicate at home with the right set-up. The music by Hilder Guðnadóttir is just a masterpiece and this was after I was completely blown away with her work on Chernobyl. The 4K is is so detailed that I put it with the elite like Dunkirk, The Revenant, 2001, The Shining. Yes I mean that, it is that good. So sprint to the store and buy this for all you UHD fans that know what quality is all about.

My one of the favourite lines from the movie was...joker saying to himself,,,"I used to think that my life is a TRAGEDY but now i realise that it is nothing but COMEDY"....so, u can imagine how disturbing a movie could be with it's theme being 'TRAGEDY=COMEDY'...but it was not that disturbing for me as i am used to of or aware of the ongoing social-political structure of our country !!! It has got those 'Dark Knight' (arguably one of the finest superhero movie ever made) vibes...i had an emotional ride, watching small Bruce Wane (Nolan's batman) meeting Joker, getting to know the pre batman story of the Gotham city and the back story or the building-up of the 'Joker the villain' of dark night.....IT WAS QUITE NOSTALGIC FOR ME IN THAT WAY !!! If i would have maximum of 5 stars to give to this movie, i would have simply divided it by zero (0).....i write about movies all the time but this one has that 'something' that forced me to type and share my views with u guys instead of writing it in my diary.....on that note i would like to finish this review with one line...."THIS IS THE BEST MOVIE IN LAST SEVERAL YEARS THAT I SAW....& U CAN'T CAN'T CAN'T MISS IT" !!!

    Fantastic Film, Exquisite Steelbook

Joker is no The Dark Knight, but much like in Christopher Nolan's second Batman film, the music in writer/director Todd Phillips' origin story about the Clown Prince of Crime plays as critical a role as any living, breathing human character. The score in Joker is so critical in fact, that Joaquin Phoenix's titular character breaks into dance at multiple points in the movie; the music and movement serving as an expression of certain emotions Phoenix's Arthur Fleck is otherwise unable to convey. The first time Arthur kills another person he actually ends up killing three people and though it could be argued the first two were in self-defense, the third death was not only unnecessary, but it is one Arthur seeks out and is determined to have for his own sense of satisfaction. Naturally, Arthur flees the scene for fear of being caught, but once he dumps the weapon and composes himself he slowly begins to move his feet as if a ballet dancer practicing the battement tendu position. As Arthur's arms move into second position composer Hildur Guðnadóttir's score begins to swell and these chords and motions only serve to amplify the liberation the character feels. Liberation of one's self after taking another's life is certainly dark, but it also isn't anything we haven't seen from comic book characters-especially villains-before and Joker certainly isn't the last time we'll see it either. What is it then, that makes this specific instance of revenge from a man beaten down by society both so egregious and compelling as has been highly documented in the cultural response to the film? Is it that Arthur Fleck's trajectory resembles that of any number of mass shooting culprits? This seems a given, yes, but more it is the level of joy-and not only joy-but satisfaction that Arthur and his eventual alter ego come to gain from the act that has incited concern over both the portrayal and promotion of such a man. Sure, Phillips and Phoenix have intentionally crafted as gritty, raw and grounded a movie as any film inspired by comic books has dared to be and in that type of portrayal there is inherent shock to be found (you saw The Boys, right?), but while Joker and its screenplay wrestle with what exactly it's trying to say it stands to make a statement about how this product of certain circumstance inspires a man to become what he believes necessary to remedy others from those same, undesirable circumstances. That's not to say he's right, but what is maybe most unsettling about the film and Phoenix's performance is that Arthur believes he is.

Joaquin Phoenix should definitely get nominated (at the very least) for his portrayal of the Joker. You know you're watching Oscar-worthy acting as soon you see Phoenix on the screen. The subtleties and depth he brings to this performance are incredible. It's also good to see that Robert DeNiro with a great supporting role. The backdrop of the movie is dreary and gritty (being filmed in New Jersey) which matches the state of Joker's mind. Excellent directing by Todd Phillips who can inject humor into a scene where it should not be and make it work. The story is engrossing and realistic. The approach to the character here makes it fresh and new. The rest of the supporting cast besides DeNiro is rock solid here as well. Joaquin Phoenix puts on a master class in acting here and this does not play like a superhero movie at all. This is a crime drama/thriller. It's one of those movies you're still thinking about the next day. Ah, the Joker, the best villain ever created on any medium in the history of everything. I purchased the 4K steelbook edition and the artwork on the steelbook is impressive, and the picture quality of the 4K, and subtle and not overdone HDR is absolutely beautiful. Highly recommended.

I was a person that saw all the hype and claims of masterpiece as overreacting and overblown excitement for another Joker based film. I thought this looked solid at best and even a bit too pretentious in the trailer, but in here to say I was incredibly wrong. This is a massive achievement of cinema that's extremely rare in a day and age of cgi nonsense and reboots. While this is somewhat of a reboot of sorts, the standalone origin tale is impeccable from start to finish and echoes resemblance to the best joker origin comics from the past. Joaquin bleeds, sweats, and cries his every drop into this magnificently dedicated performance. Heath Ledger would be proud. This is undoubtedly the greatest acting performance since Heath's joker. The directing and writing is slickly brilliant and the bleak settings and tones are palpable throughout. When this film was over the place was blown away and every audience member was awestruck that they witnessed a film that could still transport them into a character's world and very existence. Believe the hype. This is going to be revered as a transcending masterpiece of cinema.

This is one film that definitely merits every bit of the praise it continues to receive. Not just for the performance that drives it but also for many of its artistic and technical choices. The Gotham it recreates is reminiscent of a time in the 70s when places like Times Square weren’t exactly known for being the family friendly attractions they are today. It was a gutsy decision to tackle such an iconic character’s origin story on the big screen but that gamble certainly paid off. The steelbook itself features a very well done glossy finish to it with some inner print.

Bought this 4k based on all reviews of the movie itself and the quality of the video and audio as well as all the accolades this movie won. No disappointment here. The movie is VERY good! And even though heath ledger has a lock on the best joker ever, Joaquin Phoenix imo was the best cast and fit for this portrayal of the joker. Movie is suspenseful, thrilling, and intriguing from start to finish and can be enjoyed by anyone even if not a DC/comic book or superhero type movie watcher. It's realistic. As well as the movie being very good, so is the 4k picture quality and dolby atmos audio track. HDR really shined in this release. The joker's colorful clothes, face paint, and hair color Popped in Dolby Vision. Good black levels. The dolby atmos track is solid as well. The audio was a little laid back at start but once subway scene hit, it came alive and immersive. The music score is one of the best I've heard and towards the end when joker becomes relevant, the score's soundstage is absolutely fantastic! Def. buy all around.

This is the best movie of the year and does deserve every award! Everything about is just awesome from the score to the direction to cinematography and beyond. Joaquin Phoenix gives the performance of a lifetime! He draws you in and keeps you there through the whole movie. His performance is absolutely perfect. It's amazing not only the physical transformation of his body but the performance of a sad and lonely person who struggles with mental illness and tries to carry on in life with a smile on his face. People tagged this movie as a violent movie at first and yes it does have a degree of violence but look further. You will see a society where people look over and past those who suffer with mental illness as though they don't even exist. Makes you think. As a society, we can do more! Movie is GREAT! People need to see this one. Get it! Definitely worth it!

Protocol: 1. Watch "Joker" to enjoy/entertainment 2. Rewatch "Joker" and pay close attention to Joker's persona and characterization 3. Discuss with other literary individuals at a very elevated level 4. Write a 100 page dissertation psychoanalyzing Joker's persona characterization 5. Submit at some accredited academic institution and receive a Ph. D If unable to accomplish this or just don't have the time or ability just enjoy an incredible, Academy Award performance! Suggestion: Watch again Joaquin Phoenix's sensitive and loyal performance as the adoring younger brother to Mel Gibson's character in "Signs." One of the most chilling and spiritual movies ever!

    4K REVIEW: JOKER

Todd Phillips' Joker is a movie America deserves, but not the one it needs right now. Yet while this volatile, beautifully composed character study will surely be misunderstood by some of its target audience and demonized by those who fear its fragile subject matter, it's inarguably a well-made and refreshing left turn for the over-saturated genre of comic book movies. Politics and social messages aside, my only real complaints are a handful of lazy plot developments; otherwise, Joker remains a compelling drama with extremely strong technical merits. Warner Bros.' 4K is a visual and sonic powerhouse, but the bonus features leave a bit to be desired -- that month-long delay afforded the studio ample time to put together a more complete package. It's still obviously recommended for established fans and curious newcomers alike, whether you opt for this standard 4K version or one of the many exclusive variants out there

Without a doubt one of the top three films of 2019, and a true must see! Even had this had nothing whatsoever to do with DC or the "Joker" or anything like that, it still would have been a massive achievement, but the fact that a film of this depth managed to do so while in Gotham City and referencing the long history of the comics is truly impressive. I cannot say anything about the film itself that has not already been said, but it's a true work of art. Sadly, the steelbook is far from great. I'm a massive steelbook collector, and I will always buy a steelbook when available, and I thank Best Buy for going above and beyond in their steelbook selections, but this one is average at best. The cover is bland and truly annoying with the white light, and the back is a huge miss with all of the text. A mediocre steelbook case for a work of art movie. I am still giving it five stars as the movie itself is worth that rating and a must own, and given that this steelbook is at least available, then this is the version to get.

While I realize this film may not be for everyone since it can be pretty dark and not a very "fun" watch, it is a film I consider to be a masterpiece. It is socially relevant and raises questions about our world without directly answering them because there are no easy answers. It is this ambiguity and uncertainty that also carries over to the protagonist of the film and makes the film interesting. It is beautifully directed and shot. The performance by Joaquin Phoenix is phenomenal and could easily earn him an Oscar. The 4K blu ray transfer is excellent as is the cinematography. The same goes for the audio/sound and the musical score. If you like good film-making or character studies, then this is a must-buy! The steelbook is just icing on the cake. Highly recommended.
