Kamikaze Girls (Shimotsuma Monogatari)
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Kamikaze Girls is the story of Momoko Ryugatari, a Sweet Lolita, and Ichigo 'Ichiko' Shirayui, a Yanki, and how their unlike friendship developed and endured. This movie is based on the popular Japanese novel of the same name by Novala Takemoto, a well-known fashion icon among the Gothic-Lolita subculture. Although no previous knowledge of Japanese culture is required to watch, it is imperative to truly enjoy it. References are made left and right regarding the protagonists' subculture: Yanki is a type of delinquent youth characterized by their love of motorcycles and their tendencies to join 'Yanki gangs', and Lolita, a subculture of teenagers who wear a wide range of fashions, most commonly frilly, elegant, or cutesy Victorian and Rococo-era clothing. Kamikaze Girls is a light-hearted, funny, enjoyable movie, perfect to watch, and I would recommend it whether you are interested in Japanese subculture or not.
