a near perfect epic
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review."Kill Bill" is an anomaly in today's Hollywood culture. Here is a movie that neither makes you think too hard nor tears at you heartstrings--and it is a truly excellent flick. Under the shrewd (and possibly insane) hands of Quentin Tarantino, "Kill Bill" details an ultrally brutal and even more emotionally statisfying quest for revenge. Beat to a bloody pulp and shot in the head and left for dead at her wedding day, The Bride (Uma Thurman, whose name is never revealed) is carted away in a four-year-long coma. She wakes up and vows revenge. And, oh, does Thurman play revenge well. It seems that the supporting cast (Lucy Lui, Vivica A. Fox, among others) truly beat Thurman to the edge of death. Her eyes convey her emotion--the limited and brief dialogue isn't even necessary. She is surpremely convincing in every aspect of her performance, even throughout the amazingly stylish fight sequences (which put "The Matrix" to shame). She fights like a pro with samurai swords, lethal daggers, butcher knives, and frying pans. One of the main draws to this redefining adventure is the hilarious subject matter. Tarantino goes overboard. Blood flies about like fruit punch, gushing out of wounds like a torrential downpour (sometimes, in fact, you will even wonder if the human body has that much blood), and in any other movie, that gore would force you to leave--but here, it doesn't. Why? Because Tarantino never takes himself too seriously. Fight scenes are punctuated with effective and sometimes laughable dialogue. But beneath the hokey action scenes and the cute quips, there is a real movie at work here. Tarantino dances about the timeline, bouncing the story back and forth to a dizzying point, which forces your full attention on the gradually unfolding general story. The cliffhanger ending merely seals the deal. "Kill Bill" deserves all of the accolades it gets. Although it may seem to be a hackfest on the surface, there is true talent at work here. Uma Thurman and Lucy Lui give inspiring performances; the story, however linear it may be, it instantly grabbing; and Tarantino's masterful direction is as inspiringly as it is slightly distubring. A true masterpiece. One of the films to beat for 2003.

first half of Tarantino's best
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review."Kill Bill" is Quentin Tarantino's best film. It tells the story of an unnamed bride and the people that attempted to kill her on her wedding day. She plans to kill them all in a specific order, ending with the leader -- Bill. The story is presented out of order -- the first half has the bride killing the second and first people on her list. The second film continues her revenge, but it shows many flashbacks to develop the characters and the story. The small amount of dialog in Vol. 1 is extremely well-written. The first half of the film is action-packed, which is a first for Tarantino. The violence pushes the boundaries of what can be shown in an R-rated film. When limbs are cut off, blood sprays out at an exaggerated rate. Tarantino uses a clever homage to edited television movies by putting some of the film's finale in black-and-white, which allows him to keep most of the bloody violence in the film -- although about a minute was cut to get an R. The DVD has a nice widescreen presentation of the film. The special features are brief, but this release is nice to have until the boxset of both films is released. Highly recommended.

How does he do it!?
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. How can one man bring us Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, and Reservoir Dogs? Quentin Tarantino has done it again in this two-part samurai epic. With Uma Thurman as the Bride, the story starts with Uma in the hospital, recovering from a gun shot wound to the head. When she wakes from her coma, she vows revenge against the man who put her in the infirmary: Bill. She's prepared to kill anyone and everyone who gets in her way. Volume 1 does an excellent job of setting the stage for innovative samurai/karate flick. The movie has one of the best soundtracks I've heard in a movie, and I can still remember the cliffhanger ending making me think that I would die before Kill Bill 2 came out. There are few films this millenia that have been this good.

For the Action Movie Fan
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This movie was an excellent homage to Bruce Lee, most notably the outfit worn by The Bride matches that of the one worn by Bruce Lee in The Game of Death. The Green Hornet theme song is also reference to Bruce Lee's american television debut. This film is crafted to resemble the excellent martial arts and campy style of hong kong martial art films. Well done, well written, and a classic tale of shakespearian revenge paired with stylized action sequences. Truly a must for any martial art or Tarantino fan.

Super Cool Movie
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a very good movie to watch. It has tons of action with a storyline that keeps you interested also. I particularly love all the fight scenes as Black Mamba seeks her revenge. I also prefer this movie on Blu-ray due to the better video and more precise sound. I particularly like action movies since action movies normally have an abundance of sound. This is a movie highly suited for the Blu-ray format especially if you have surround sound. I would recommend this movie to anyone.

Must have on blu-ray
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you have a receiver capable of hd audio, you will be wowed by the sound. The picture quality is top notch. Even if you have it on dvd it is still worth getting on blu-ray. If you have alot of money invested in your home theater, and you want to show it off, Kill bill 1&2 is great. Uncompressed and hd audio on my yamaha v-663 reciever has everyone telling me that it sounds way better than any theater. The klipsch speakers also help. A great movie just got made even better.

Tarantino's Tribute to Kung Fu Films
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Everything about this movie is what you'd expect from Quentin. It is comparable to his classic Reservoir Dogs in innovation, style and his innate ability to pick up on popular culture conciousness and take it to the next level. If this homage to 1970s, King Fu doesn't get to you then you just don't like Quentin. The end fight scene is better than any I've seen in action/fantasy, Kung Fu with swords based in the Orient.

More extras would have made this great....
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Aside from the higher definition, I thought the purpose of spending extra for the blu-ray was the additional content? If you already have the DVD versions of the Kill Bill volumes you might want to pass on the blu-ray versions. The content is exactly the same as the DVD extras and the picture quality may not be enough to warrent the extra cost. But both movies are fantastic and make a great addition to any blu-ray collection.

Best seen as a 4 hour movie
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When originally made, Kill Bill 1 & 2 were one movie. It was split up due to it's excessively long length. Though, as a whole, it is an amazing movie! It is a shame, however, that part 1 has been censored from it's original version, to be able to obtain an R rating. The Japanese DVD of Kill Bill 1 is the only release of the movie that is in it's original format. If you are able to obtain that version, I definitely recommend it! The Blu-Ray release of Kill Bill 1, however, even in Japan, is the same R rated American version. However, it is easier and cheaper to buy the American version.
