A Must-Play Side Game for Fans

Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory explores the entire history--so far--of the series in a single game by introducing a rhythmic gameplay system. Players can play as favorable characters and venture through various Disney worlds to level up, obtain collectible items, and progress through a new chapter in the franchise. In my experience, Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory's rhythm-based gameplay system is unique and challenging, but the soundtrack behind it is the main highlight. The game features a massive list of resonating tracks from Yoko Shimomura, the composer of the Kingdom Hearts series, which even includes popular songs from various Disney songs. There's also two multiplayer modes, such as local co-op and online versus, which works well with the game's rhythm system. The story is also quite intriguing as it follows the events of Kingdom Hearts III and hints at what's to come in the series' future.

While the PS4 version of this game is still MUCH better than the Switch version, the game itself feels rather lacking in some regards. The amount of songs and content in the game is plentiful (though some official remixes are still missing), but the overall quality feels low. Especially in higher difficulties, many of the songs opt to put the player through a series of repeated patterns of enemies/beats without really working to match up to the actual tune of the song. There is also "zero" exposition in this game. If you're looking for a classic KH experience with some deeper meaning to what you're doing, that level of attention was very much not paid to this game. You start out in a basic Gummi Ship and travel around a flat screen, picking songs to play. No beginning cutscene, no opening cinematic explaining your motivation - nothing. Overall, this game can be fun if you're just after the KH songs. But I wouldn't recommend picking this up until it is discounted, as it does not feel like a $60 game.

The music of KH and the entire KH story told through Kairi's perspective. Over 150 songs to play through that covers the KH story and history from humble beginnings on Destiny Island to the final chapters of KH3. Each stage has unlockables and various difficulties to play through. You even get to ream up with some classic Disney characters along the way.

I'm a big fan of the Kingdom Hearts series, so I purchased the game not expecting much of the story to progress but just to play through songs that I loved throughout then series. Songs such as Dearly beloved, Simple and clean, and Don't think twice. The main story is about 9 hours long giving recaps of what happened before in the series and in the end I was rewarded with context to what is going to happen more in the next arc of Kingdom Hearts. If you are a fan of rhythm games and a fan of kingdom hearts I totally recommend this game, if you are not a fan of either and want to get into the series I would recommend you play though the entire series collection that is on ps4 and is almost always going for 30$-40$.

Really fun rhythm game. Also a nice trip down memory lane, as the game walks the player through the most important story bits of past Kingdom Hearts titles.

The game is fun, even on the easiest difficulty you have trouble completing some of the levels with a high rank, if you miss an enemey or object it will sometimes result in a huge chain reaction of damage and misses, the versus computer battles revolve around LUCK with the computers usually winning, if you enjoy Kingdom Hearts you will enjoy this game, it even has the song Calling from The World Ends With You, one of the greatest Nintendo DS games.

I'm a huge fan of the series, and especially love its music. So this was always going to be a day-one buy for me. The number of tracks included in the game is huge, but still manages to be disappointing in some aspects. There are only a handful of pieces from Kingdom Hearts III, despite that game adding a bunch of great new music to the franchise. And most of those tracks aren't available in the primary gameplay mode (Field Battle) -- only in one of the other two modes (Memory Dive or the very rare boss fights). I love that they decided to include pieces from some other KH music releases like the orchestras and piano collections, but I do question the desire to add in extra Disney songs that aren't present in the games. They're a cute idea at first, but since it's known that there are no plans to add more tracks via a later patch or DLC, I can't help but feel like those Disney songs are taking up slots that could have been used by other KH music that got left out. Overall, I'm having a great time with the game. It feels good to get better at a music stage, and getting to have a small look at the future of the series' story is neat. I do appreciate that it's small enough to not require a purchase from anyone who is interested in the story but is not a fan of the rhythm game genre.

A musical adventure light on story but not on fun. A first for the Kingdom Hearts series. This rhythm game is accessible for new comers to the genre and offers quite a challenge on higher difficulty for those looking for it. Outside the main story there is even more songs to play, master, and challenge folks online. Revisit classic Kingdom Hearts and Disney Tracks in order the games out. The game is basically a playable recap of the series with a focus on the music. The game itself is not hard to be beat but your enjoyment will depend based on how much you enjoy the series and/or rhythm games. The story at the end is the 1st bit of story content after Kingdom Hearts 3 and is about 20 min length at most. If you are playing for new story prepare for disappointment but if you take it slow and play to have fun and listen to a collection of some of the greatest tracks by Yoko Shimomura this is definitely worth the ride.

If you like rhythm games and Kingdom Hearts, then this is right up your alley. If you're invested in the story only, then I can't recommend this simply for that, as the amount of new story in this game is miniscule. The rhythm game is fun and with 150 songs, there are plenty of tracks to enjoy.

Great rhythm game for any fan of the series. Once it gets discounted a bit from original MSRP, will definitely be worth picking up. Original price was a bit steep for a rhythm game, but I'm a hardcore fan so had to buy it day 1.

A fun rhythm game that doesn't have a whole lot of substance and is mostly for fans of the Kingdom Hearts franchise. Wouldn't recommend if you weren't already well steeped in the series.

As both a KH and rhythm-game fan, I'm personally having a lot of fun with KH MoM! I have been taking my time with the game and attempting to complete each of the objectives before moving on. As I have been playing, I have been getting hit with nostalgia and there is a lot to do too! My main critique is that I wish there were more songs featured, especially the ones from KH3 - "The Other Promise/Vector to the Heavens" and "Face My Fears" come to mind - and I was hoping the music from Pirates of the Caribbean would've been featured too. Other than that, I would recommend this game to another KH fan, not sure if this would be a great game for someone unfamiliar with the series, though it may get them curious and want them to play the series as a whole. c:
