I had been researching the latest leapfrog products for several months and was planning on purchasing in November. I had my eye on the leapfrog leap pad platinum and almost purchased that one, but then the epic was released and I started reading up about it. One of the biggest things that made the epic better than the leap pad was the fact that it runs on android. That right there is awesome, because now I have access to the Amazon App Store for downloading apps other than the limited ones for the leapfrog App Store. Friends had recommended going for an Amazon Fire tablet or other similar type tablet because it's cheaper, but for us, having used leapfrog tablets for several years, we were very happy with the educational aspect of it that is front and center. And also we had purchased apps from leapfrog in the past that we can download on the new device without paying additional money. This new device doesn't have a slot of cartridges, so your old games will not work on this device. We actually saw this as a plus, because now there is no more worrying about lost expensive cartridges.
The epic runs the leapfrog software on top of android, so the kids would just see the gorgeous leapfrog menus, while the other internet and android settings are restricted with a password in the parents section. The device has wifi but it is safe, nothing can be accessed on the web that hasn't been vetted by leapfrog staff, things such as videos, websites and games all have to be approved by leapgrog. In the past I saw this as a limitation, but now with the addition of android software I can get to the web and Amazon App Store for games that were previously available. When my son sees his brothers in their iPads with an app such as talking tom, we can now download that free app onto his tablet too. Amazon has a ton of free apps, the leapfrog App Store apps are all very expensive, and an extremely limited amount of free content, another huge plus of having the addition of android.
I said before that everything is vetted by leapfrog staff before begging allowed on the epic, however this does not apply to apps downloaded from the Amazon App Store since they do not have any control over those. But since those are locked in the parent section, you donors have to worry about the kids downloading anything that is not appropriate, the parents in this case are the ones who approve and control what apps are downloaded.
The home screen is also great, it is a street with many interactive things to do such as change the weather, customize it with characters, trees or other things. It displays different content depending on the child's age and will grow with him once he/she gets older, the child's birthday is entered at setup so it knows what age the child is over time.
We are very happy with this device, we have 3 kids, and as it turns out the epic can have up to 3 accounts. This gives each child a unique age appropriate experience while having access to of the apps we have installed. Highly recommend this for the young ones over giving them something like an iPad, which is overkill for the needs of a young child.

We bought this for our 2 1/2 year old. We were going back and forth between this one and the Kindle Fire Kids tablet. This tablet has been great so far. It seems rugged (especially with the cover that it comes with) and it comes with quite a few good learning apps. We have purchased a few apps already since our son is young and some of the apps that are included he's just too young for. I feel like this tablet will be able to grow with him, which makes it worth the higher price. The only thing I don't like is that there are no free apps, and that all the apps are learning apps, so I can't get him any apps that are just games (he would really like a car racing game). Other than those 2 things, I think it's a great tablet and I highly recommend it.

I bought this for my 3 year old son and he loves it. It came with a lot of good apps and we downloaded two more app games from his shows he likes to watch. He plays with it every day and works great in the car keeping him distracted on long drives. Easy to use and set up. Since it is a real tablet can use it like a normal tablet going on the internet. It is nice you can expand the memory with a micro SD card to add more music, games, and pictures.

I searched reviews for months and finally was between this one and the leap pad 2. I thought I could be satisfied with the leap pad 2 but through a series of events I wound upgrading to the epic. My 2 year old is into movies and this one allows her to watch movies thru her Disney website without using my phone. Since she's younger I've unlocked the parental controls on the web so she can do more. You can access more kids apps with the Amazon underground app. Since my child is only 2 she doesn't totally grasp all of the concepts of the tablet but she's at least interested in it enough to keep her occupied and not throwing a fit because she's bored. It's a great unit to grow with her and offers great learning resources. It was a little bit more expensive than the leap pad 2 and at first that deterred me but I'm glad we had the opportunity to upgrade. The internet feature is worth the extra price. Great product.

Our son has had a good run on his leapad2 but was ready for something more .The Leapad Epic has surpassed our expectations. Kid approved Web sites, transfer of existing apps, wifi, time limits on games/apps, parental locks . We feel safe letting him go on pbskids, ABC mouse, and others without worry. It will be a great asset to his learning and his sister will get one in couple of years.

I bought 2 of these tablets during the holiday for my 2 and 5 y/o grand kids and let me just say, they are two happy kids. I can even use the tablet to watch YouTube! I would buy this tablet again in a heartbeat!

Tablet is great. My 4 year old son loves it. Holds a charge pretty well. Great fun games. I used to have a nabi before my son decided to hulk smash it. Found out they don't sell that particular brand anymore. I wish this tablet had similar features such as the play store but it doesnt. You can download amazon underground which has a lot of the same cheap or free apps but sometimes it glitches and doesn't work. I was able to get netflix on it because my son loves cartoons like super y and color crew. The volume for downloaded underground apps are low so get headphones. All in all great tablet, good size, great games.

My 2 year old son loves his leafrog tablet. Though it was not friendly user. I had to google it on how to download a youtube for kids because my baby loves to watch kids show. And one more thing, before we bought the leafrog it said that even under 2 year old can use it. But i guess it was too much advance for his age. But overall it was fine.

We bought this for our 5 year old for Christmas and she loves it! It is very kid friendly (I don't feel like it will break easily), easy to use interface, and has all of her favorite games that she used to have on her old LeapPad. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because I wish it had more app options. Other than that I think it was a great buy!

I purchased for my 3 year old granddaughter. She loved it and played games with her Daddy. It is made solid for the roughness of a child. They can watch videos that are programmed into it and games. I would highly recommend purchasing this tablet! I reviewed alot of them on the market before purchasing this one.

unlike those popular brands out there, this tablet actually helps your kids learn rather than play games and watch movie. Those functions are available but I love the learning apps on this tablet

You buy this kind of modified Android tablet for its functionality, which LeapFrog never lets you down. If it only had the same kind of replacement warranty a Kindle has (though ours hasn't broken yet).

Very easy to use. Grandkids think they are playing but in reality are learning. Parents of the children find it a very good learning tool.
