Great visual execution, but lacking substance

I originally went into this movie with a pretty high exception given the reviews listed and not that its devoid of complete merit but it lacked in alot of areas. I was expecting a movie in vain of the classics such as hero, curse of the golden flower, or house of flying daggers, and maybe that was to high an expectation, so as much as it wasn't my cup of tea, for many others it has been, but it never really took off, while it looked great on the surface no character seemed really well done in the acting department and you never really cared for them. Just my opinion

One of the greatest set and costume movies

I loved this movie "The Banquet" I guess they changed the name in hopes of better sales. The set design is awesome not using any CGI to make it look bigger or more impressive. Some of the style resembles Lord of the Rings and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon but still holds well on it's own as well as the story adapted from Hamlet. I think what kills this movie for the average view is the ending which requires some thinking. I have come up with appropriate ending theory that makes sense. I have not gone through all the extras yet but have listen to the commentary that was very informative. When I purchased this bluray I noticed a Best Buy exclusive sticker on it so for now you will not find it retailed anywhere else.

    top end modern Chinese cinema

    Posted .

top end modern Chinese cinema. Has all elements of visual, auditory and literary entertainment, truly a high budget movie that stands well above the usual junk produced from HongKong. It can be watched over and over without boredom; has detailed emotional nuances and music to match. Comparable to AMerican classics such as DR zhivago, Ben Hur, etc . A serious instrospective on how the Chinese people think and behave.
