Slow out of the box, much faster after tweaks

I couldn't resist the $120 pre Black Friday sale BestBuy had on this laptop. This laptop is slow out of the box, (which is to be expected for a brand new laptop at this price point) but after a few tweaks you can get a much quicker and surprisingly usable laptop.
First thing you need to do after you login and get to the desktop is to run Windows updates. (This took almost 2 hours for me) Next thing you want to do is to take Windows 10 out of S mode (This allows much more freedom and is very easy to do, just do a quick google search)
Next bit will be tricky if you are not very computer savy, but will greatly improve the performance. Uninstalling all of the apps that Windows 10 comes pre-installed with will GREATLY improve the overall performance and general responsiveness of this laptop. (Here is a link that is very helpful and is very detailed on how to remove Windows 10 built in apps)
https://www.windowscentral.com/how-uninstall-remove-restore-built-apps-windows-10
Last thing you should do is to install a ad block extension into either Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome. I use Ad Block Plus and it makes a tremendous difference in web navigation speed.
Overall for $120 I am happy with this laptop. If you are looking for something basic for email, schoolwork, or light web browsing, this is a good fit. However, this laptop for me would be a much harder sell when it is not on sale.If you are on the fence about buying this computer, wait until it goes on sale. I bought this laptop so I could have a cheap laptop to test programs on and use for some old Windows XP era games from my childhood, and after running updates and performing the tweaks I mentioned above this laptop fits perfectly for my needs.

I purchased two (2) of these on sale thinking I was getting an incredible deal for my money! Instead, I feel as if they got the better deal by receiving my money in exchange for this thing. Right out of the box, I had to factory reset it due to glitching. However, once working, I quickly realized I was not going to have any space to do anything. Here I am thinking, heck its 2020, surely this laptop would work to look up stuff on the interwebs and save a few things while checking email and stuff while relaxing, Haha. It'll do most of that - its the saving stuff that you won't be doing much of. Oh, did I mention its slow?! Yeah, its like pouring cold molasses onto a slanted table and watching the drip roll down to your waiting pancakes below. It's like taking the bypass completely around Atlanta just to get off the exit before yours (well not that slow but you get the point). Finally, they are NOT UPGRADEABLE!! Anywho, I switched back to my older laptop and boxed these up for donation. Perhaps they can provide a 4 year old with solid performance for their needs. But then again those 4 year olds are smart these days...

bought it as a simple computer and needed something on the cheaper side that can do basic tasks like music, email, etc. for school & wanted to be able to play sims on it. works super well, though a little slow. i love it the only things that could be improved is the speaker quality glitches occasionally and sometimes it’s slow to load but for the price it’s a great computer and works for my needs. would not recommend as a gaming computer tho :)

I bought this laptop so that I can remotely access my work computer from home under quarantine. I didn't want all the extra software to gum up my MacBook, so I wanted something affordable and effective. The Lenovo does the trick nicely. It's much better quality than what I was expecting for around $200. It'll handle your basic office needs: documents, web-browsing, email, etc. I don't imagine it would be able to handle any gaming, however, and it slows up a bit when I have too many things open and running at once. But it does exactly what I want it to do.

Once again, thank you for choosing the Lenovo IdeaPad 1 14 Laptop. You can keep your computer running at its best by keeping the Windows 10 Operating System and all supporting BIOS files and drivers up to date. You can easily accomplish this by scanning the computer with the Lenovo Utility software available on this computer. This system has Lenovo utilities installed to help maintain the health of the device and keep the operating system software up to date. Type "Lenovo Vantage" in the Cortana Search window (if Lenovo Vantage is not installed on your device, you can download the APP and install it now). Select Lenovo Vantage from the list. In the window that opens, click on "Health and Support". In the expanded menu, select "Hardware Scan" In the window that opens, select "Run Quick Tests". This will scan your entire system for errors. Follow any directions that may pop up. If the problem continues after this scan, now click on "System Update". First select Windows update from the menu. Scan your system to be sure you have the latest version of Windows 10. Once that scan is complete, select "Additional Updates". This will scan your device to be sure there are no new BIOS/Driver updates needed. Follow any instructions that may pop up. If you ever need additional help with your Lenovo computer, we recommend you call Lenovo Tech Support at: 877-453-6686 for additional help.

Perfect combination of portability and practicality. Light, compact and a sleek profile make it so easy to carry on.
Best for Windows users who need the flexibility and functionality of having access to your files on the cloud or any portable drive on the go.
My only complaint is that the Windows 10 version installed is in S mode, which only allows downloading apps from the Windows store (not my favorite). Therefore, if you want to install Chrome and other third party apps, you will need to disable the S mode in Windows, which is a pretty straight forward operation. Keep in mind, though, that you won't be able to revert this option once is done.
If you don't need lots of storage or gaming speed, this device will certainly fit the bill for your basic portable needs, including office, emailing, streaming video, Skype, etc.
Last but not least, The price is right! On sale under $150 at my local Best Buy store.

Our new Lenovo was a replacement of another Lenovo we have been using every day for past 9 years. We use 3 Lenovo laptops for personal as well as business use and would recommend this brand to anyone wanting a nice easy-to-use laptop. The young many at Best Buy who helped us was terriffic. Really helped us make up our mind. ONLY thing with this particular laptop is that it needs more memory (selection was pretty narrow due to Christmas and folks/students working from home) but bought it anyway. I can always add more "zip" to it at a later date.

Day one started with Windows S version and no internet . It ran ok , until I started the Lenovo Vantage software to prep for the internet .Then it hit the cpu to 100% after restart Nothing opened, ouch that hurt . Tried to uninstall the it 3 times before I realized you have to go thru the start menu vantage ,more arrow , then terminate , then scroll down to uninstall. There are 3 Lenovo apps . It ran great the CPU loved being in the 45% - 65% with nothing running .. Launched windows update. Got NET frameworks plugs 4 and 5 after 2hours she rebooted to a cool 68%-77% cpu crunch ,but ran ok ..I loaded Mcfee Windows S version .. the Cpu was grabbelling at 85%-95% nothing launched idle mode ...started YouTube and it hurt at 480p view ,cpu hit 100% ....so I deleted mcfee wSVr . Went ahead and used the free windows 10 Home version upgrade .. loaded mcfee windows 10 Home version ..loaded my current. Office 365 personnel .. it crashed ....then after 9 hours of task manager tweaks it ran at 90%with Word open in blank page ...Task manager said it was Mcfee ripping apart the cpu and memory ... so I removed Mcfee win 10 h... it took 3 hours to remove Mcfee .....installed WEBROOT ANTI VIRUS INTERNET SECURITY COMPLETE after a 3 hour inSTALL ....THEN USED THE OPTIMIZE TOOL IN WEBROOT...the cpu runs at58%—70%ish With MW WORD AND windows Edge tab running ...Added WEBROOT web threat shield and GHOSTRLY EXTENTIONS and the browser went smooth ...strong build ,light weight ..use an online storage room or 3.0 thumb drive for docs, pics ..

For the price, this computer has a great form factor and is completely operational. There is an IMPORTANT caveat. When you first boot up and go into Windows 10, the operating system installs a lot of updates in the background. You can't tell its doing it unless you look carefully at the processes but it is happening. What this means is that if you first boot up and then try to do things like streaming it will look very stuttery and slow. If you give it a day to stay on and complete all of its background stuff, then reboot this computer works like a charm. It will work with Zoom and works great for streaming games via Geforce Now (though it will get a little warm). I've also run Linux on this thing and it runs even better as linux machine than a windows machine though you will need to install the wifi driver separately as it isn't installed by default. You can easily find the tutorial online (takes 3 lines of code). For $120 this thing is a very good deal as long as you understand its limitations. It is made for web browsing, and office work and can do light gaming (or awesome gaming via GeForce Now, Witcher 3 looks awesome on this $120 machine)

Got it for 130 in Black Friday so can’t argue on price, however the laptop is extremely basic and quite slow. Very nicely built, has a matte display (so not the shiny glossy screen), keyboard is great and it’s very light.
The bad: It really does not work for me, it takes a while to open YouTube, load videos, you cannot have more than 2 tabs open on a browser without it lagging big time, and overall it’s a slow computer.
The good: super cheap, very light, including a super light charger so it’s perfect for portability, it comes with office incl for a year and windows.
If you want a laptop to open one spreadsheet without any heavy work and basic email then you are good, anything else will not be able to perform.

For the black friday price its a great windows device. I would buy this over ANY Chromebook . Some in the reviews say it sucks but it's really how you manage your storage . Quick tip : By right clicking on your common folders such as documents, downloads, music ,video and some other windows user folders , Going to Properties and then the location tab you can set the actual storage location on other drives such as a micro sd or other portable drive once you set it will move contents automatically to the new location. I bought a satisfactory condition during black friday pricing @$107 and for the price i love it . Its lightweight not huge . I am a gamer although i did not buy this for gaming i prefer desktops for that but it did run cities skylines surprisingly well on low settings . It does come with windows home in s mode which is free and easily upgradeable to windows 10 home within 5 minutes and a single click. I am a techie so knowingly these are likely the lowest specs you can buy. I recommend downloading and using chrome as your default browser as its much more efficient than most other browsers . But has potential if you manage your storage correctly.

So keep in mind that this laptop isn't for everyday busy lifestyle, but it is perfect for the casual one. As i am not tech savvy about PC's, tablets and laptops, Two of my main reasons for purchasing this laptop was the price and i had done a full complete reset of my old laptop which made it impossible to mirror how i had it before and $222.99 i figured why not all i really it for is to go online and store some files on it.
Since having the Lenovo Idea-pad i have not, so far, have had any problems with it, aside from an occasional slow down here and there. The Lenovo Idea-pad is very light and compact making very easy to take with you on the go. The keyboard is some what smaller than most PC keyboard layouts causing occasional button mishaps but aside from that its an easy overlook, so if you have small hands then you should have no problem typing on this keyboard.
As for who this laptop is meant for? Its meant for the person that doesnt have the busy lifestyle that demands the necessity for laptop to work from. This laptop is meant for the student, the writer/blogger, the video streaming enthusiast, the art student thats just starting or the for the person that just wants to go online and surf.
overall i really do enjoy this laptop for its simplicity and practically. So far its doing what i need it do and ive even been able to install all of my programs that i had previously on another laptop with no security issues whatsoever. If your thinking about purchasing the Lenovo Idea-pad i would recommend that you do and what see what it can do for you.

After reading so many reviews online I was worried about getting this laptop.
First thing you should know, like any laptop fresh out of the box, you need to do an update. It's a pain, yes I know. But do it. Stay on top of all windows updates.
Second, install your antivirus suite. I recommend webroot or Norton.
Third, get a micro SD card ( I used 256GB) to extend the memory. Go-to the settings > under storage and select "manage storage". Change everything else to the micro sd card as storage but leave the app and map to use drive C:\\.
Lastly, use your laptop on a table to avoid over heating. Or if your like me, and you want to use your laptop even in bed, then invest in a laptop desk fan!
That said, my only regret is that I bought one. It's fast surfing the web, opening microsoft word. I don't game with it, I removed the unnecessary apps and games.
So far I'm loving it. Wish I could get another one for the cheap price of $100. If only. Best buy if you read this, maybe we could work something out. Yes?

1. This is a very good economy laptop. Let's be 100% clear; not giving it 4 stars compared to all laptops, rating it as an el-cheapo "disposable" laptop. It would probably get 2 stars (or maybe even 1 star?) compared to any of the excellent, expensive gaming laptops (or the new Apple laptop with their fantastic new M1 chip). This Lenovo one step above a toy; but while it feels "cheap," it works well enough; assuming you remove and/or don't install any software which is not absolutely necessary.
2. I assume one could EASILY slow it down to a complete stop if you tried to run a lot of software, open a bunch of browser windows, or treated it like it was an expensive high-performance laptop. Please make sure to remove any software you don't need. For example, you probably don't need the xbox program, since it does not have enough power to run most games anyhow. It can (and should) run microsoft's antivirus; but it does not have enough power to run any of the other anti-virus programs.
3. When it starts up, it may automatically run an anti-virus-scan. It will be VERY slow until the scan completes; then it will speed up to just "slow." Slow, but fast enough to do any simple chore that you, or your school-age child needs to do.

I needed a computer fast for my 8 year old for distance learning. I chose this over a chromebook because the difference in price was minimal. It's a nice looking little machine, but it is slower than I anticipated. It's fine for doing basic work, but you cannot have more than one tab open at a time, and forget trying to use Zoom or any kind of video interface. He has to use my (much faster) computer for that then switch back to his computer to do the assignments. Also, I dumped Windows S, stopped using Edge and switched to Chrome and that helped some.

The biggest attraction is obviously the price point, but what you get for that price, the value, is always the most important factor in any purchasing decision. In this case, you get a pretty solid laptop for lighter workloads. We are using this computer for a very specific task which does not require a lot of computing power and its perfect for that task.
This is not a daily workhorse, it is not a powerful machine, but it also doesn't claim to be. This is a cheap laptop that can handle a light amount of work much better than the older generations of cheap laptops. This is mainly due to using a internal eMMC instead of a slow, mechanical hard drive. That has always been the biggest limiting factor in the past for budget laptops. The eMMC flash memory is leaps and bounds faster than 5400rpm hard drives in budget laptops of the past, making them actually bearable!
The biggest annoyance for this laptop is the power cord. It has 2 issues: 1. it is not long at all, which makes using it while charging it an issue, and 2. the AC adapter is built into the plug, so the plug itself is HUGE. Good luck trying to plug this into an outlet without taking up the space of multiple outlets due to the giant block attached to the plug.

The Lenovo IdeaPad 1-14 laptop ships with a free 1-year subscription to Microsoft Office 365 (a $69.00 value). If you are experiencing slower performance than is indicated by the SPEC, be sure any software you installed is compatible with Windows 10. There is no need to install Microsoft Office software. The software is already part of the operating system, you just need to activate the software with a purchased product key. If you have installed a copy of Microsoft Office, this is conflicting with the existing copy on the system and this will slow your system down. If you have installed a 3rd party anti-virus program, be sure that Windows Defender is turned off and that the trial version of McAfee Anti-Virus software is uninstalled. There can only be one anti-virus program on the system. You may need to restore your system to original factory default settings if any of the programing errors have occurred. You can do that by typing "restore" in the Cortana search window. Just click on the magnifying glass icon at the bottom left of your Windows 10 Desktop. Click on "Reset This PC" Then click on "Get Started" and follow the on screen directions to restore to factory defaults. The Lenovo IdeaPad 1-14 laptop is an entry level, light use system with its AMD A6-9220e processor, with a base speed of 1.6GHz and a boost speed of up to 2.4GHz, 4GB of RAM and a 64GB eMMC solid state hard drive, for quick access to files and programs. This model ships with Windows 10 S-Mode Operating System. Windows 10 S-Mode provides added security by only allowing APPs available ( and therefore certified by Microsoft) at the Microsoft Store. If you don't need the added security or you need to install APPs not available at the Microsoft Store, you can switch to standard Windows 10 Home 64-bit Operating System, at no additional cost. The Lenovo IdeaPad 1-14 laptop is not meant for multi-tasking or demanding programs. It is good for Microsoft Office and light internet browsing. The Lenovo IdeaPad 1-14 laptop ships with a free 1-year subscription to Microsoft Office 365 (a $69.00 value).
