Great computer for the price as for performance, but it lost one star due to the build materials. The computer does flex in the keyboard and track pad areas. Other than that its fantastic.

This was a a great buy! We got it for a very good price. In terms of the computer itself I cannot be happier, it is really powerful. I bought it for college since I’m studying engineering and there are some applications for rendering 3D models etc... that require plenty resources, so far has held up really well and it is pretty fast at everything. Initially we had a problem because the computer we received had a missing key, so we called costumer service and they they send me another one really quickly.

I love this laptop. I have this for 2 years now and it's still working like a charm. Windows update sometimes kinda f---ed it up but all and all it handles some (quite heavy) gaming like a charm. Be mindful that in order to heavy-game, you will likely have to plug in the power and play in order to get the game to run smoothly, otherwise the frames and such will drop significantly. And the fan is a bit loud but I'm used to it and is fine with that.

    Sub-optimal hardware selection

The Legion Y530 is well engineered and feels like a solid laptop, but the selection of options for this specific unit does not have an optimal price/performance balance for gaming. If you replace the Optane memory with a solid state drive (SSD), then this laptop could be a decent option for entry-level gaming, as long as you don’t have expectations of getting into Virtual Reality setups. As-is with HDD + Optane, however, I don’t recommend this for gaming. =====[ Hardware Package Selection ]===== The lone 1TB 7200 RPM HDD is not appropriate for a gaming system, in my opinion. Besides making the system feel generally sluggish, having the operating system, all applications, and the game you’re playing all on the same HDD is a major IO system bottleneck. This means that during periods of any significant disk activity, IO saturation will lead to stuttering (both in-game and out), which can become very significant. Lenovo doesn’t provide SSD as an alternative to HDD in this model, but it does provide it as an additional option. SSD or HDD + SSD is common in competing gaming laptops at this price point, and it is my opinion that either configuration is an absolute must for gaming. For this reason alone, I would not recommend this particular unit unless you intend to immediately install an M.2 SSD (replacing Optane memory). The 16GB Intel Optane Memory seems like a terrible waste of money, and waste of the M.2 slot. A mere 16GB is nearly pointless. It’s not enough to accomodate a modern graphics-heavy game, and even if it were, there’s no way for users to specify cache priorities, so you’re stuck with the automatic prioritization based on file access behavior, rather than having the flexibility to determine where you reap the performance benefits. What’s more, it does very little in combating the IO bottleneck of the HDD. An SSD M.2 stick, while costing a little more, would have had a massively superior performance benefit. The GeForce GTX 1050 Ti was chosen over the base 1050, which is what you want for maximum performance. This is a decent entry level GPU, but unfortunately falls short of minimum requirements for most Virtual Reality systems by just one model. Competing laptops around this price point can be found with the GeForce GTX 1060 (base and Max-Q), providing a performance boost and VR-readiness. The Intel Core i7-8750H was chosen over the i5-8300H. While it’s nice to have, this is overkill for this system. I’m of the opinion that the money for this particular upgrade would have been better spent elsewhere, when considering the price/performance balance. The 16GB of RAM was chosen as an upgrade over the base 8GB for this model, which is very important for gaming. While 8GB of RAM is technically sufficient for most games the GPU is capable of handling, it doesn’t leave much headroom for multi-tasking, let-alone near-future-proofing, and doesn’t leave much buffer for the increasingly prevalent trend of resource/memory leaks being present in games, which means long gaming sessions in many games may not survive without the need for restarts with only 8GB to go around. Once memory swapping kicks in, gaming performance takes a major nose-dive. If you were to go with the 8GB RAM loadout instead and decided to upgrade later, you’d be wasting money by replacing the existing 8GB stick, generally a necessity because unmatched sticks--if they work at all together--usually suffer a considerable performance hit. =====[ Screen / Keyboard / Trackpad / Speakers / Camera ]===== The screen has a matte finish which provides protection against glare, but at the cost of sharpness, vividness, and brightness. The maximum brightness is sufficient for comfortable viewing in-doors, but doesn’t come close to reaching the maximum brightness of the displays I’ve seen in other laptops at this price range. The keyboard is surprisingly well designed for gaming, with great tactile feedback and key travel, low noise generation, full sized arrow keys, full number pad, consistent backlighting, and even dedicated print screen and video recording keys on the bottom row. Outside of gaming, however, the lack of dedicated page up/down, home, and end keys feels cumbersome when performing various tasks. Also, the keyboard tends to dip down noticeably with firm key presses. The trackpad, deviating from most modern laptops, has dedicated buttons that require greater than average force and travel to press down. The trackpad surface is smaller than average, but is very smooth to the touch and responsive. The speakers are unimpressive, but they do have a solid mid-range. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any form of isolation or vibration dampening, resulting in heavy vibrations felt through the keyboard surface while playing music or gaming, when not using an alternative audio output. The bottom placement of the camera means the image is likely to consist more of your fingers than your face, at most comfortable screen angles. I would much rather have top placement even at the cost of a larger top bezel. Camera quality is unremarkable and doesn’t seem to support Windows Hello. The microphone picks up my voice well with plenty of volume. =====[ Performance ]===== In benchmarks, the hardware components rated average or slightly above, with the exception of the HDD. The performance benefits of the Optane memory were very sporadic, and overall, having it felt much closer to a pure HDD system than a pure SSD system. Actual game performance matched my expectations, including the occasional stuttering. To provide two specific examples, in one game, a player spawning in wearing clothing that hadn’t been cached would reliably cause stutters, and in another game, switching between zones, causing game state being written to the hard drive would also cause reliable stutters. These two repeatable and easily testable examples were not observed in a comparable system where the OS and games were installed on a SSD instead of a HDD. Cooling and ventilation seemed quite decent. The battery is rather lackluster, draining fairly quickly even when not gaming. =====[ Engineering / Design ]===== The over-all engineering feels very solid, for a plastic build. The display hinge has the right amount of friction for easy opening while holding its angle steadily. The majority of the ports were intelligently placed out of the way in the back, while still offering a USB port on each side for convenience. The peripheral port selection is decent, but is noticeably lacking an SD card reader. Both interesting and unusual, they implemented access to the BIOS/EFI/boot menu through a dedicated pinhole button rather than a keyboard key. The surface that shares a plane with the keyboard and trackpad is covered with a soft-touch material that feels nice, but unfortunately my experience with this type of material in other devices is that it eventually gums up and peels, which has me worried about how it’ll hold up in this laptop. =====[ Misc. ]===== The original unit I received seemed to suffer from persistent hard drive problems. After a unit swap (through the manufacturer), the problems seem to have been resolved.

I love this lap-top! My last lap-top had a weak hinge and it ended up cracking and no longer could open and close. THIS lap-top is much sturdier with a great hinge! I was told that this one had taken the place of the previous one. The one thing miss is that the other one had a touch screen and this one didn't. I assumed this one had the touch screen too and I didn't think to ask about it. So that was my own fault. Other wise I really like this lap-top.

Thank you for choosing the Lenovo Legion Y530 laptop. This model ships with 16GB of Intel Optane Memory supporting the 7200RPM standard hard drive. The solid state Optane Memory stores an image of Windows 10 for boot up from off to the Windows 10 desktop in less than 10 seconds. It also learns the programs and files you use the most and keeps an image of those files as well for fast response. If you are not experiencing this fast response, be sure any programs you have installed are compatible with Windows 10. There is no need to install Microsoft Office software. The software is already part of the operating system, you just need to activate the software with a purchased product key. If you have installed a copy of Microsoft Office, this is conflicting with the existing copy on the system and this will slow your system down. If you have installed a 3rd party anti-virus program, be sure that Windows Defender is turned off and that the trial version of McAfee Anti-Virus software is uninstalled. There can only be one anti-virus program on the system. You may need to restore your system to original factory default settings if any of the programing errors have occurred. You can do that by typing "restore" in the Cortana search window. Just click on the magnifying glass icon at the bottom left of your Windows 10 Desktop. Click on "Reset This PC" Then click on "Get Started" and follow the on screen directions to restore to factory defaults. If the problem persists, we recommend you contact Lenovo Tech Support at: 877-453-6686. Lenovo

There is no "special" recovery system needed with the Lenovo Legion Y530. This model ships with 16GB Intel Optane Memory. To restore Windows 10 back to the original factory settings, Optane Memory must be turned off first. To restore system, Optane must be disabled first in the BIOS
o Power down system, power back on and press F2 to enter BIOS setup
o BIOS setup > Configuration > Storage > Intel® Rapid Storage technology > Intel Optane, 931.5GB > Disable > Are you sure you want to disable > Yes > Disable
      o Wait for 3 minutes
o The Disable process should be finished and there will be (2) non-RAID physical disks
o Press F10 to Save and Exit
      - The system should now be able to be Restored
      - After restoring, you will need to open the Optane UI from the task bar and choose Setup > Enable > Select “Erase all data on Intel “Optane” memory module > Continue > Restart. Now you can restore the Windows 10 operating system to factory original settings by following the instructions at this link:  https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/reset-windows-10-pc. Be sure to re-enable the Optane Memory after you restore the system, then restart the device, as listed above. If you continue to have an issue, we recommend you call Lenovo Tech Support at: 877-453-6686. For 2018, Lenovo retained its place for a second year as the best laptop vendor:

Short & sweet, I like this laptop and I have had a bunch of them over the years. Only thing I didn't like was the screen was a bit harsh/blue/white light but that was easy to fix by making it a bit yellow by going into reading mode in Windows. Great keyboard, looks, battery life is decent, performance is working for me. I love Lenovo! I've had Yoga 920 and other laptops by them, not disappointed at all.
