The Professional's Surface - Active Pen Confirmed!

As a college student and soon to be music teacher, I needed something with more power, longevity, and workplace durability than a Microsoft Surface with the caveat of also requiring active pen input. This 2 in 1 checks all of those boxes and then some! Bootup is near instant due to the M.2 SSD partition, multitasking is a breeze thanks to the 8GB of ram and i5 processor, graphics are fantastic due to the discrete Nvidia card, and the screen and pen input works fantastically well thanks to Wacom's team up with Lenovo to offer their new "Active ES" pen technology. (Disclaimer: the pen needed to use with this device is lenovo part number 4X80H34887 - the ThinkPad Pen Pro. A regular wacom stylus will not work. However, Wacom announced a Bamboo Smart that should also work as it uses the same Active ES technology) The only thing that this laptop does not have that I may decide to upgrade to is a primary SSD. However, I may purchase one soon as bestbuy has several on sale and then once I upgrade, I can use the insignia drive bay to turn my old HDD into a 1TB external drive! Highly recommended and an excellent value for an open box item or brand new! Those of you looking to use the program Staffpad or anything else requiring an active pen or digitizer, know that this thinkpad will absolutely get the job done for you.

    Great Laptop - Bad HDD

Laptop is great, although if you purchase this I strongly recommend removing the hard drive that it came with and replace it with AT LEAST an SSD or 7200 RPM drive. The drive in this machine is slow and does not perform very well. Aside from that small note, the laptop is an amazing piece of work. It's solid, flexible, and beautiful to work with. I would definitely recommend this laptop to a friend.

I had to return two machines

I purchase this laptop a few weeks back. I liked the fact that it was relatively light and had a 1TB hard drive on it. The Think Pad keyboard was also very nice, and it retracted when putting the laptop on tablet mode (the only 2-in-1 I have seen with this feature). However, once I started working with it, I noticed several issues. First, brightness would change all the time. Then, a couple of times I was not able to bring up the computer after sleep mode and had to do a hard reboot. Also, when going through the Windows 10 photo app, pictures would take a very long time to get loaded. Finally, I received an error message about issues with the battery (this only happened once). So, I figured I must have had bad lack with this machine and decided to change it for a new one. Unfortunately the new computer had its own issues. It still had the brightness problem and it was not able to handle a few applications running at the same time (like iTunes, Chrome, and maybe Excel). This is a big deal for me, given that thi is an i5 5th gen with large enough RAM. Hence, I just returned it and got a different computer/brand. BTW, trying to get to Lenovo’s technical support from their website was frustrating. In fact, I was never able to find their tech support phone number, only the one for sales…

    Fit my needs and comfort.

Perfect size for me as I was already familiar with the computer from work. Was a bit pricey at the time I bought it, but I liked it the best. The bundling of service and programs made it doable.

    Overall faulty product

If you are debating between buying a PC or spending a couple hundred more for a Mac, buy a Mac if you can. I am already on my second Thinkpad (it is less than 2 months old) and the computer turns off whenever I move the screen. This is extremely frustrating, especially since I am a grad student and cannot afford the 10 minutes it takes for my computer to reboot while I am in lecture. My first Thinkpad, which was less than 5 months old when it had its first problem, had a minor issue with the volume key permanently pressed down. However, when I sent it into the supplier they offered me an exchange instead of just fixing the minor issue. As a previous Mac owner, I am completely disappointed with the quality of this PC and will be returning it, yet again, for an exchange since that is all that is offered. Also, I decided to write this review from my phone when my computer decided to shut off for no reason (the 3rd time today!). Again, if you cannot afford a Mac try a different brand of PC.

    Worse than DOA

    Posted .

Worse than DOA is spending two days on configuration (set up, OS updates, application installations and updates, file migration, etc.) only to have the device enter the sleep mode (normally), but never wake up again. Black screen. Dead. No means of startup. No meaningful signs of life whatsoever. Online threads suggested the use of the hidden underside reset button and a special poser button sequence, neither of which had any effect. Geek Squad personnel were no more successful than I was. Time wasted. Item returned.

    This laptop is garbage

My wife is returning to college, so I decided to upgrade her laptop with this one. It was a mistake. Pros: Great specs Awesome software features, which are given to you for free. Cons: The laptop lasted a week and we could no longer use the keyboard. This is a known issue with this laptop, so I wouldn't advice you purchasing one.

    Terribly Slow

First one I bought stopped working within an hour of taking it home, returned to another best buy since the original store was out of stock. This new has not had the same issue as the first but is extremely slow. Will be returning for a refund.
