On day 29 of owning this laptop, closed the lid and beards strange noise. Re-opened to find the screen cracked. Of course, screen cracks are not covered. Furthermore, there don't seem to be screen replacements available. Have read stories of Lenovo keeping them for 2+ months for repair. Wish I had bought Dell or HP.

Absolutely the best laptop all around

I was on a long search to find a 13 inch laptop that was both thin and light and also powerful. Now, I don't normally write reviews, but I was so impressed by this laptop that I felt compelled to share my thoughts. This laptop exceeded all my expectations. Something about myself: I am a mechanical engineering college student, so I needed a laptop that would be able to run CAD software, but also portable enough to carry in my bag all day. I narrowed down my search down to the Surface Book (i5, 8GB ram, 256 GB, dGPU) and this laptop. I am so glad that I chose this one because it not only is much cheaper but also has better specs. In order to organize this review, I am going to break it down into a few sections: Performance: This laptop is a beast. With an i7 processor, 16 GB ram, 512 GB PCIe SSD, and Intel Iris 540 graphics, there is nothing slowing it down. Now, I want to highlight the Intel Iris 540 graphics. I definitely need more than the standard integrated graphics for CAD, and this is one of the few thin 13 inch laptops that has an upgraded graphics card. The Intel Iris 540 graphics provide up to 50% better graphical performance than the standard HD 520 graphics and can sometimes exceed the performance of the NVidia 940M gpu. While it's not as good as the Surface Book, the graphical performance is good enough. Also, 16gb of ram means that this laptop is future-proof and never has problems multi-tasking. Build: I like the build of this laptop. It is impressively thin and light, and the magnesium alloy plates on the exterior of the laptop feel great, making the laptop feel extremely sturdy. I also really like the hinge: it is certainly over-engineered, but is really stiff and sturdy. It is extremely cool that the device also doubles as a 2-in-1. I have no conerns about durability, as there is minimal flex and everything feels well made. The only thing that worries me is that you can see the display ribbon connector exposed through pieces of the watchband hinge, which increases the possibility it may be damaged, leading to screen issues. Keyboard and Trackpad: Although some reviewers did not like the shrunken-down shift key, I had no problem adjusting to this keyboard (actually it wasn't much of an adjustment). I actually prefer this keyboard to the ones on Apple laptops because the keys have a very nice springy feel. The backlighting is very even and helps in low light. This is honestly one of the most comfortable keyboards I have ever felt. As for the trackpad, this is my only complaint. The surface is very smoothe and feels like glass. Unfortunately scrolling is a little stuttery, and I have had better experience with Percision Touchpads. Nevertheless, the trackpad is very useable and wouldn't prevent me from purchasing this product again. Software: This is a major highlight: absolutely no bloatware! I usually expect to take hours to set up a computer and remove excess software, but this time, I didn't have to. There was none of it. Certainly a pleasant surprise. On the other hand, the drivers were very stable, with no crashes and little updates needed to fix any problems. I have no issues with sleeping or waking up from sleep, as others have indicated. Heat and noise: This was another important factor that made me buy this laptop over the HP Spectre x360 with the i7 6560u cpu. I don't know how Lenovo did it, but this laptop runs very cool. There are two fans, but they hardly turn on or are noticeable. The bottom becomes a little warm, but certainly not hot or anything to be concerned of. The fans are located along hinge, so I don't need to be concerned about blocking the vents when using the laptop on a bed or couch. On the other hand, the HP is known for becoming quite toasty on the bottom. Display: The screen is gorgeous, if not overkill. The contrast is great, colors are vivid, and viewing angles are spectacular. The colors are also very accurate. The touchscreen is extrmely responsive. There is nothing to complain about, but I would prefer a 1080p screen instead just to have the extra battery life and to avoid any scaling issues with older software. Ports: Great ports, especially from such a thin laptop. I like the charger that doubles as a USB port, and the USB C port for futureproofing. I only wish there was a HDMI port or a USB C to HDMI dongle bundled. I hope my review has been useful. I am looking forward to using this device for the next 5+ years, and I certainly believe it can. It had all the specs one could dream for in a thin and light package. As an extra bonus, the box the laptop came with is also a feat of engineering -- the laptop rises to you as you open the box. The price is amazing, especially compared to the competition, and there is absolutely nothing else on the market for this price with this hardware.

The better of the two with similar specs.

So at the time I'm writing this Best Buy has two models with what seems like similar specs. They both are silver, have an i7 Processor, 16gb memory and a 512gb ssd. This one has a 1,399 price and the other is on sale for something like 1,249. It seems like they are the same but they are definitely not. I would strongly suggest getting the 1,399 one for these reasons. 1. This has a PCIE 3.0 NVME SSD. It's way faster than the SATA III SSD on the other one. The Model I see in the testing software says it's a Samsung MZVLV512. I'm getting read speeds of 1,351mb/s where most SATA III SSD's max out at 500mb/s. So almost 3 times faster and if you upgrade to a Samsung 950 pro you could get even faster. With my test the write speeds seem a little slow across the board but the NVME SSD is a huge selling point. 2. This has an Intel i76560u with 540 Iris Graphics. The integrated graphics on this processor was about 20-40% faster for the vids I rendered. I can't comment on gaming but it's definitely better for editing videos. So here are the negatives. 1. USB-C for a display port. This could be the deal breaker for me as I haven't found a USB-C to HDMI adapter that works so I haven't been able to plug this into my monitor. This is very frustrating and Best Buy doesn't have adapters in stock. 2. The screen is pretty glossy and not that bright. I'm noticing a lot of reflections I didn't with my other laptop before buying this. Some things that aren't terrible but I'd like to see improved. 1. It's a pretty big profile compared to a lot of 13.3" competitors out there. It's a little wider and longer. I'd like to see it be a little more narrow and maybe a touch shorter but not at the expense of re-positioning the cam at the bottom. 2. The laptop has lots of space for a full keyboard but they skimped on the shift button on the right side. It's not as easy to hit as a normal keyboard. I can live with it but I'd like that changed. 3. The keyboard is pretty far from the Thinkpads I've owned in the past and it would be great to see a little better typing experience. However It's very usable and I could spend a whole day typing on this without getting frustrated. 4. Would love to see a black and silver exterior as well as the other colors. Wasn't super into the all silver exterior but at least it's black on the inside. So here are the positives. 1. Feels well built 2. Fast modern NVME drive 3. Battery life is pretty good. I didn't expect much with these specs but it seems like I'll get 6-8hrs depending on how I use it in power saver mode with the screen at about 40% 4. Fast Iris 540 integrated Intel Graphics 5. Fast PC overall. 6. Minimal bloatware. So I like this laptop and if it just had a normal HDMI out I'd be sold. However if I can't connect this to my display via HDMI then I'm going to have to reluctantly return it.

First I will start by saying that this updated model, the Yoga 900-13ISK2 is relatively unmatched in the market right now as far as its specs for this price point. The upgrade over the originally-released Yoga 900-13ISK is pretty amazing -- now it includes Iris Pro Graphics (instead of "Intel HD Graphics") and a dramatically faster M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD (instead of a M.2 SATA SSD). A similar-specced competitor model will easily cost you almost $2,000 (if not more!) and this product is significantly cheaper than this (I got it for almost half of that on sale and with coupon!). So that is all very good, very cool stuff! For me, I primarily am running various flavors of Linux these days and was what I intended to use with this device. I was looking for something very thin and lightweight, touch screen, backlit keyboard, and enough memory to simultaneously run multiple virtual machines while doing other things. It checks almost all of the boxes for this except there is one major flaw: Lenovo has configured the new PCIe SSD to run on the Intel RST controller in RAID mode and it cannot be seen outside of the pre-installed Windows environment! There is no setting in the BIOS to change this, either. You cannot install Linux or any other operating system on this device--you can only use what is already installed. It boots up fine using a Live USB and almost all of the hardware seems to function perfectly with at least kernel 4.4 or higher. But it cannot see the hard disk. This issue also seems to impact the Lenovo Yoga 900S and the Lenovo 710S as well (both of which use PCIe SSD instead of SATA SSD just like this new Yoga 900-13ISK2). There is a lot more information here: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/Yoga-900-13ISK2-BIOS-update-for-setting-RAID-mode-for-missing/td-p/3339206 Lenovo has acknowledged this as an issue and it seems like they are working on a fix, however, based on support messages on their forum it seems like it will probably be a few months before updated BIOS are released. People have seen this same problem with Dell XPS 13, however the BIOS on the Dell allows you to change the hard disk controller mode from RAID to AHCI, which then allows you to see the disk fine in a Linux or any other environment. Also, using fakeraid is typically heavily discouraged in Linux anyway due to the fact that it is still software-based and uses CPU, while tools like mdadm to set up a software-based RAID have been tested to be more efficient and flexible with failure recovery than using a fakeraid controller like this. So even if you could run this device in Linux with this controller in RAID mode, you probably wouldn’t want to if given the choice! For this Yoga 900-13ISK2, you cannot change this RAID setting in the BIOS. I have tried countless methods, and others have even tried other things including writing changes through EFI shell, only to continue running into roadblocks. I was also able to use mdadm to pull up information for the RAID controller (commonly called "fakeraid" in this implementation) and can see the controller, it can see all of the slots available on the controller, but it reports all of the slots as empty. In Windows, the Intel RST tool shows that the device is on Port 5, but in Linux through mdadm, Port 5 is listed as empty. So even trying to use software fakeraid in Linux to use this (via either dmraid or mdadm), the drive is somehow not being exposed from the controller. Also, there is no Intel RAID BIOS made available, so you can't do anything like press Ctrl+I at boot to change the controller settings directly -- you are just stuck and completely locked out. This does not impact just Linux -- it seems that many other people have tried to install a fresh copy of Windows, such as Windows 10 Pro (replace what is currently on the device), and they can't even install a new version of Windows. However, I have seen other reports where people may have been able to load the Intel RST drivers during the Windows installation and that worked... but there is no equivalent for Linux. So because of this problem, I don't really like the idea of waiting several months or more before I will be able to use this device, so I, like many others who have encountered this problem, will be returning my device and still on the lookout for something else. The other thing that I did not like about the Yoga 900-13ISK2 is that the fans come on quite a bit and they are VERY loud. It doesn't sound like a defect or anything -- it just sounds like they are pushing a lot of air and it makes a pretty loud whir. I could not get used to this and would probably return it just for the fain noise and heat that it generates even if Linux could work fine on it or not. I am very eagerly awaiting the release of the ASUS UX360UA (not CA) as it can have up to i7-6500U and 16GB of RAM as well... hopefully it will be released soon! I have also been considering the Samsung Notebook 7 Spin 13" -- you can upgrade it with a 2.5" SSD and up to 32GB of DDR4 memory... I just don't like that it is quite a bit heavier (almost 4 pounds!) and the screen is not as bright. In summary, if you plan on using this device only with the Windows 10 Home installation that it comes with, maybe occasionally boot to a live USB, and don’t mind the occasional loud fan noise, it is still a solid device with very nice specs. It doesn’t work for what I want to do with it, but it might work for others looking for a very powerful package in a small size!

This laptop is fantastic. At first I was concerned about the black interior looking and feeling cheap, but I have absolutely warmed up to it. The laptop is light, surprisingly sturdy, blazing fast, and beautifully designed. The battery lasts a very long time-- I've never had an issue where it was even close to being out of juice. Its size and weight makes it easy to travel with. It's completely replaced my need for a tablet, which I used to take with my while traveling instead of my laptop. I was hesitant about the placement of the power button on the side, but that hasn't given me an issue once. I didn't want to compromise on anything, and this laptop was the perfect solution. I'm incredibly satisfied with my purchase, and hope it continues to impress.

I read an extensive amount of reviews before buying this computer, and I was a little put off by the amount of people that have been knocking the durability of the laptop. However, after buying this for a discounted price as an open-box return, I have nothing bad to say about this computer. The build quality is excellent, the keyboard is a breeze to use, and the design is intuitive. The touch screen is great, and even though I don't use it in tablet mode very often, it is nice to have the flexibility. If you are on the fence about this computer, I would most definitely recommend it. Especially for the discounted price, you are getting a great deal.

I was gonna wait for the new MacBook Pro with touch bar. After much research decided to give Lenovo a shot after having several other brands... HP spectre X2 and 2015 MacBook pro completely disappoint me. I happened to get a really good deal on this at my local BB due to an issue with the open box model I was originally going to purchase. The General manager at my store is just awesome. The Yoga 900, dollar for dollar, if you can get one with the 16 gb ram and 512 ssd at a price closer to $1100, is by far the best value for a high end, ultrabook convertible. The QHD display is beautiful. Very light and tablet mode with touch works flawlessly. Make sure you update Windows AND go to Lenovo website --support-- install the Lenovo bridge software and update your drivers from there right away,(don't update in device manager). This thing blows away the 2015 MB pro I had for a short time and returned due to limitations on drive space, had issues with onedrive functionality and other cross platform problems and Apple's software/apps for MacOS/OSX are limited, expensive and horrible. Anyway, Ive had zero issues with this machine so far and performance has exceeded expectations. If for some reason it begins to flake out on me, I will update this post immediately.

Best Buy Yoga 900's have issues

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I ordered two of the Lenovo Yoga 900's. First one was open box but was supposedly Geek Squad certified and in brand new condition. The one I received was dented and scratched. I did use it for several days hoping that Best Buy might reduce the price even further due to the damage. It was bad enough that the unit received was contrary to their open box written guarantee of "like new, excellent condition" but the fact that I had to stay on the phone for way too long with no resolution except to have to drive to a local BB to return it. I mean, this was THEIR mistake and I have to do all the work to resolve it. While I still had it, I played with it a bit. I noticed the fan made an awful lot of noise; even when the processes or memory were minimally utilized (8GB RAM and 256G SSD). Figured that might be part of why it was originally returned by the first owner and became an open box. Nonetheless, back it went to Best Buy for a full refund. Then I ordered a brand new Yoga 900 online with 16GB RAM and 512G SSD for about $200 more. Figured maybe 8GB RAM could have been causing the machine to overrun. Well, nope. After configuring that one, putting in all MS, Intel and Lenovo updates and drivers, that dang machine's fan ran all the time, was loud as all get out and ran hot on the upper right hand bottom of the machine. I couldn't figure it out because there were lots of BB reviews that said their Yoga ran hot, fan loud and while others that said their machines were totally quiet. Maybe this one was a lemon, too. It went back to Best Buy. In the meantime, while running searches on the Yoga 900 model, I found a new 8GB/256G 900 for $100 less than Best Buy's price. So I bought that online. It arrived the next day. I've been using it for a week, have it all set up (including Office 2016, AV and other software apps) and it runs like a dream. No loud fan noise, no heat, fast response and just perfect. Haven't even done any updates on the machine. Either way, the Lenovo Yoga 900 is a lovely little machine. Sleek, fast, quiet, cool and efficient. Just make sure you don't settle for a noisy, hot unit.

I am an avid MacBook Air user and I was looking to replace my 4 year old 13" notebook with a new one. Then I saw this in the store and was really impressed! The Mac I was looking at had all the same features but was $400 more. I will miss the OSX operating system (I've never had a virus, Can't say that for Windows) and the fantastic trackpad, but so far the Yoga is a great upgrade! Great Specs, But Major Issues

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I was in the market for a new laptop after my 5+ year HP was starting to become outdated for my needs (software development). After doing extensive research, I decided to pony up the money to grab this laptop. The specs were excellent and the 2 in 1 was a neat feature I thought I'd like, but admittedly haven't used yet. This was my first ever Lenovo purchase. The performance has been very good to date. I've experienced very few performance issues, with very few lock-ups or hangs. I'm pretty happy with this. I use an external monitor, so the laptop sits on my desk with the screen closed 90% of the time. It was a headache at first to get a USB-C adapter to play nice with my monitor, but all is well after some trial and error. The power adapter is also a bit ridiculous, but you get used to it. This is where the fun ends. I have had 2 major issues with this laptop, and as a result cannot recommend Lenovo to anyone going forward. This will definitely be my last Lenovo purchase. Major issues: 1. I have the common problem where the laptop simply won't turn on after going to sleep. Yes, I have all the updated firmware. I've found a work-around is to hold the power button for a full minute, release, then press it again. The work-around works about 70% of the time on the first try. Occasionally I have to walk away for a bit, then try again. I can't tell you how annoying this is. The folks at Best Buy told me they constantly have this issue and recommended resetting and/or replacing the battery. I honestly think this is a firmware related problem. 2. Fragile Screen - I'm not joking when I say this laptop never leaves my desk. Aside from opening and closing the lid, and occasionally moving it to clean, it never leaves the desk. Yet somehow this morning, I open the lid to a full crack across the screen, originating on the lower corner. I have no idea how it's even possible. Obviously cracks aren't covered under warranty. Getting any kind of support to fix this or find a replacement has been almost impossible. A quick search indicates this is a fairly common problem with these laptops. I wish I would have researched a bit more before buying this. This is the first device out of dozens of laptops, tablets and cell phones I've ever owned where I've gotten a crack, especially of this nature. If Lenovo wants to market these as 2 in 1's and expect people to actually use these as tablets, they better get their acts together, What a joke. Good luck getting any help from Lenovo Customer support.

    Great Laptop

This laptop hits all the high points for business and pleasure and stays true to the Lenovo brand. The laptop/tablet mode when a flip of the keyboard is detected is a life saver when travelling in a plane when the person in front decides to recline his seats. It does take getting used to the mouse pad, as I have always used the T-series/HP pointer style for the past years. The only drawback I can see and it is very annoying is it takes up 1 standard 2 plug US power outlet because after plugging into the wall, the second slot is partially covered. As a constant traveler using limited hotel and air terminals and even my own living space where the kids are always charging something, its very annoying, but on the flip slide usually the ample battery life makes up for it.

I would recommend this to a friend
