I had purchased this sound bar to complement our new LG TV. I liked the features it offered as well. This was an open box unit that Best Buy had indicated that it was in " excellent condition". That being said, however, it created pixilation of the TV picture as well as sound gaps and freezing. I had to return it. As an aside, I may reevaluate my TV purchase if I have to replace the the LG TV. their UI needs some simplifying. It's not all that intuitive!

This speaker and subwoofer both feel solidly built and setup was ridiculously easy. Everything you need is included in the box and in a matter of moments you are up and running. The sound for this setup is pretty good, especially when you use the appropriate setting for what you are using the sound bar for. If you are listening to music, select the MUSIC preset. Watching a movie, change it to MOVIE. Pretty self explanatory, but the differences in sound between the settings is very noticeable and useful. There were times when I would be watching a movie on my television without any external sound device and the dialogue would be difficult to hear or taken over by other noises in the movie. After hooking up this sound bar and setting it to the appropriate setting, watching a movie became much more enjoyable and I don't think I could ever go back to using the regular TV speakers again. The bass put out by the subwoofer was both pleasantly surprising and appropriate, which seems to be a rare combination. It adds a good deal of thump while listening to music, and compliments the main speaker very well in cinematic experience without any sound delay or overbearing booms. The ATMOS feature wasn't that noticeable, but I may be spoiled as I have a higher end surround sound in my theater room that also utilizes Dolby Atmos and does it well. But this sound bar is not intended to rival a surround sound system that is exponentially more expensive, and it doesn't. But in a living room, office, bedroom, or wherever, this setup will put a smile on your face and not leave you disappointed. The only real downside I found is the included mounting brackets. They are very limited to how you can mount this sound bar, basically below a wall mounted TV on the wall. I am using this setup in my master bedroom which has a built in entertainment center and would like to mount the bar below the shelf that holds my television. If LG included more versatile mounting options, this review would be a 5. Cliff notes...not a surround sound replacement as packaged, but it will wake up your TV/Movie experience greatly, last a long time, and is the easiest speaker setup I have ever done.

Great option for Surround Sound, minimal footprint

The LG SK8Y is a very good sound bar. I will start out by saying that if you are an audiophile, you won’t want a sound bar to begin with so this isn’t for you; however, if you are looking for a clean way to bring decent surround sound with ample bass to a small family room, basement or man cave, this is perfect. There are two 80W speakers built into the bar and a wirelessly connected 200W subwoofer. When I was setting it up, they connected to each other easily and one time did the trick. I was able to hook this up quickly using the included (albeit very thin) optical cable. I configured it to join my wifi network to allow for updating and over the air music from my phone or tablet. It also allows for a hardwired network connection, Bluetooth, and of course HDMI as connection options. There is an LG Music App that you can download to help fine tune it or change settings which links to existing music services on your device. The sound from movies was very good and the way the bar “throws” the sound around the room it does simulate a more encompassing surround sound setup. In addition to that, there is a speaker kit you can purchase that will allow you to implement rear speakers for true surround sound. The front display is minimal and gives you what you need such as the current connection (wi-if, Bluetooth, etc.) along with volume number and surround type. All in all, a very good option for someone looking to get surround sound in their room without dropping a lot of money and with the upgrade options, makes it an even better option.

    1st soundbar experience -

This is the 1st soundbar I've obtained and it was more out of curiosity than need as I have a sound system setup for TV/movies. That system takes up lots of room, requires little to no maintenance and sounds great but doesn't get as much use as in the past. So I'm curious about alternatives that would allow downsizing but still provide a great sound experience. Setup couldn't be easier, the biggest effort is getting the system on the wireless network. Easy-peasy. I like that. The subwoofer connected to the soundbar with no help needed. Great job by the LG folks making this step a no-brainer. I connected the soundbar to the TV via optical cable [included]. Power cords might be a bit longer but that's a minor nit to pick. Didn't use the include mounting brackets. Zip ties are included as well to dress out the cabling where needed. Fine tuning the sound parameters [bass/treble], balance between the subwoofer and rear speaker levels as well as other are available in the app [Android here]. The remote includes access to the basics. I leaver the system set on the bass-blast setting which, as the name implies, delivers the most bass; the other settings sounded weak to me. Even at higher volume levels, the sub didn't over power the bar, it was reasonably balanced. This thing can get LOUD...satisfyingly loud. But beyond loud, sound quality was good. Dialog was always crisp and clear and balanced [source material is mainly responsible for that but I never got the sense the soundbar was "coloring" anything]. Overall, I'm still moving back and forth between the LG systems and the separates system. The soundbar system won't replace my current system [it's not designed to replace separates] but I'm convinced it is a perfect system for the bedroom.

The build quality of this sound bar and woofer is exceptional, being a truly compact home theater speaker. When taking these out of the box, you can immediately feel their heft. The sound bar modules feature a slick black metal finish that wraps around in a pleasantly curved rectangular exterior from bottom to rear to top where it meets the equally nicely metal finished speaker grill that wraps over the top and bottom edges about half an inch. I just like the look of metal grills over cloth grills, it gives that nice reflective shine for a more premium look. Both left and right sides of each speaker use a kind of rubberized material. The discreet but pleasantly tactile buttons such as power, input select, and volume up and down on the first speaker. The second speaker side buttons include play, bluetooth, and again, volumes up and down. The sound quality is really good. Base effect could have been a little better though. Max volume is pretty good. It combines the two speakers to the front of the listening position to create a wider and more powerful sounding 2.1 sound system. The sound bar is designed to lay flat like a traditional looking sound bar. Google music, pandora and other usual apps can be Chromecasted. Setup is quite simple. The wireless subwoofers are heavy and can be placed anywhere in the room. Overall, a very solid product for the price.

This sound bar with wireless subwoofer is a nice addition to our basement living room where we did not want to go overboard with an extensive sound system. This LG sound bar matches well with our LG TV, but it could just as easily have worked with any other TV. Installation is a breeze with just an optical cable needed to connect the sound bar and the TV -- and with the subwoofer connecting wirelessly. While we are using it almost exclusively for the TV, I did pair it to my phone and have streamed music to it via Bluetooth. The sound quality is decent. I used the remote control that came with it to bump the base a bit (I could have done the same with the mobile app that is used to link the sound bar to WiFi). Have not used with Chromecast yet. I need to do a bit of investigating since every time that I turn the TV on, the sound bar fires up with volume at 7 (and the volume needs to be increased to hear it well). Would like for the "on volume" to be what I set it to when turning the TV off...

This is a great sounding 2.1 channel soundbar that is also easy to set up. If you are so inclined, you can just plug it in, put batteries in the remote, connect it to your TV, and enjoy. The wireless subwoofer of course still needs to be plugged into AC power, and you need to connect it to your TV using HDMI w/ARC or the included optical digital cable. Older TVs that don't have HDMI w/WARC must be connected via the optical cable, regular HDMI won't work. Some LG Tvs can connect to the soundbar system without wires. Bluetooth also works. I've tried mine connected to an ancient plasma TV via optical and it sounds fantastic. And since this particular TVs optical output also is volume-controlled by the TV remote it works just the same as if the TV had HDMI w/ARC. It turns on and off with the TV, as well. Most TV optical outputs are fixed-level in which case you would have to use the soundbar remote to adjust the volume. I've also paired it with my Android phone using Bluetooth and it sounds great, as well. The soundbar can also be controlled via a smartphone app that uses WiFi but it's not a requirement. There are several other sound mode settings that you may or may not find useful. I found that setting it to "ASC" lets it figure out what is playing and how to adjust accordingly. Seemed like a gimmick but in my use so far it's been the most accurate sounding configuration. I can't comment on the Dolby Atmos capabilities since I don't have a source for those materials. But in general use for TV, movies, and music it sounds great.

    An Excellent Soundbar System

This LG soundbar is replacing my previous Polk model I purchased last year and so far it has proven to be a most excellent product. In all fairness so far I've only used it connected to my TV via the optical cable so I can't speak to its Chomecast capabilities or the Wi-Fi features it includes. For me this is purely a soundsystem for my TV, it it does not disappoint. From removing it from the box to having it up and running took about 15 minutes and is pretty straight forward. Once up and running I tested it out with a few of my recent favorite movies (Thor Ragnarok and Captain America Civil War) and the sound from this system was amazing. It has a few different sound modes (bass, standard, movie) and I tried all of them out but found "movie" to be the best all around sound mode for both regular TV shows and especially for loud movies like the two I tested it with. There is no distortion but I wasn't able to turn it all the way up without worrying about the neighbors complaining. Seriously, this thing gets LOUD! There is an excellent sound balance between lows, mids, and highs with no distortion at all. The simulated 2.1 effect works and adds to the experience of watching movies at home. One thing I really enjoy is that with this system you can actually make out voices clearly while watching movies or TV shows. I'm not the best to describe this sort of thing but believe me, if you're coming from another soundbar setup or the built in speakers on your TV you will notice this, especially in the movie mode. Via Apple Music with my AppleTV connected to the TV I found playing music to be exceptionally pleasant. Again, the way you can make the lows, mids, and highs adds an entirely new dimension to a TV sound system. I'll be setting up the Bluetooth connection with my iPhone sooner rather than later just for that reason. If you're looking to upgrade your home theater sound system and don't want to go all in with 4.1 or 5.1 systems then you will be extremely happy with buying this LG soundbar.

For all of the people having issues with the sub cutting out, try reading LG’s instructions. I didn’t in the beginning, and guess what... my sub was cutting out. I have a wood cabinet TV stand, with my TV sitting on top with the sound bar, and my WiFi router “WAS” below in the cabinet on the shelf inside. The first thing that I did to try and solve the problem was to deactivate the 2.4ghz radio in the router, leaving only the 5G one on. Bluetooth is also 2.4 from what i’ve read, so I figured that maybe that was interfering. Well, the sub was still cutting out. So then when I read LG’s cautions, and their instructions say that if there is a router, it should be a minimum of 1 meter away from the sub and bar. So, I moved my router to the corner of the room, about 6ft away from the bar and sub. PROBLEM SOLVED. The sub has cut out ZERO percent of the time since moving the router. So, this setup looks good, sounds good, and matches my LG B8 OLED perfectly. Plus I paid $299 for this because I bought it with the TV.

This speaker really has a lot going for it. It is 2.1 but man it packs a good punch with good overall sound. Setup was easy enough. The settings on it are simple to understand. The control is functional and small. If you have an LG TV, it already syncs with that controller. I already have plans to upgrade with the 2 satellite rear speakers to enhance the sound further.

We got this for our wall mounted TV in our bedroom to enjoy a little better sound than our TV speakers deliver. This product certainly did that. The sound is well-balanced with quality throughout the sound range. Installation was a breeze (as it should be with a sound bar) and works perfectly with our TV which is not LG. At first I thought it did not get very loud with the volume turned all the way up, but after playing around with the "Sound Effect" button on the remote and choosing different modes for different types of programming, ie, music, movies, etc., I found that it will put out a lot of volume, certainly more than I need in my bedroom. Overall I really love this product, it is exactly what we needed. Highly recommended!
