Soundbar and sub sounds fantastic and has a ton of boom. Easy to setup and works well with my tv and other pieces. However the sub is constantly disconnecting and going in and out. Looked it up online and it seems to be an issue with lots of buyers in this lineup. If it wasn’t for that, this would be a perfect score. After this pandemic is over, I will contact LG to see what can be done. I’ve had this soundbar for about a month. I currently use LG TV’s and am looking to upgrade. This makes me hesitant at the moment.

For the price I got it for its more than what I needed and its a great match for my LG TV. The quality and subwoofer is definitely better than I expected and the ASC option does a good job.

The LG SL5Y 2.1 Channel Soundbar with Bluetooth wireless Subwoofer is full-featured yet simple external sound enhancement for any TV configuration. The device provides both optical and HDMI connections for TV and any console or HDMI streaming device. The included 220 Watt Subwoofer connects seamlessly via a Bluetooth 4.2 wireless connection and provides a Base Blast setting for bringing out the beats of any music, enhancing the sound effects of movies, and giving clear distinction to dialogue. With the DTS Virtual: X Digital Surround sound, this front facing Soundbar does a fantastic job of filling the room. A USB connection on the Soundbar provides the ability to add a card with music files. Setup This was the most simple soundbar setup and configuration I have ever encountered. The Soundbar connected to our TV via the included digital optical cable and a power cord. The Subwoofer connected with a single power cord. Once the system powered up, the Subwoofer automatically connected to the Soundbar via Bluetooth without requiring any additional configuration. There is a Bluetooth pairing button on the back of the subwoofer speaker if paring is needed. With unboxing and setup, we were up and running within ten minutes. Sound and Settings The LG Soundbar delivers 90W of sound with two front-facing speakers, and the Subwoofer delivers 220W wirelessly, which allows easy placement without any speaker wires. There are four different sound effect modes: • ASC - Adaptive Sound Control • Base Blast - Enhanced bass • Standard - Optimized • DTS Virtual: X - Immersive surround sound. For our room I found the DTS Virtual:X settting to be the most enjoyable for watching movies and listening to music. Even at the higher volumes, the Soundbar provided clear and crisp music without any distortion. External Bluetooth and HDMI Connections Another great feature about the LG Soundbar is the ability to use it as an external wireless speaker for Bluetooth enabled devices. I was able to play music from my iPhone and iPad after connecting to the Soundbar. Switching back to the TV is easy by using the "F" button on the remote control and cycling back to the Opt-TV for the digital optical connection. You can also connect a gaming console or HD device (DVD/Blueray) via the additional HDMI connection on the LG Soundbar. We are happy with the LG SL5Y Soundbar for providing a room full of music and entertainment. I highly recommend this for anyone seeking a quality front-facing soundbar.

The LG SL5Y soundbar is pleasantly powerful it replaced an aging competing brand soundbar that was super basic. There is so much to like about the SL5Y and we will have a closer look at it. :::General Impressions::: Let us start off first by acknowledging the fact that audio I am not well versed in audio like I am in video and computers. That being said my general impressions are very positive and the main reason for that is that literally anyone can purchase this soundbar and plug it in and it will automatically work. Well I would say that should be the case for those who have connected the sound bar via ARC (Audio Return Channel) which is through HDMI. As long as you have a television that supports this and as far as I know all modern televisions should have it right out of the box. I have a Sony UHD television and it immediately recognized the LG SL5Y that I had connected. I did not have to change any of settings on my TV and that impressed me. I also plugged in the sub woofer and it immediately paired and Is wireless I have a Sony as well and for whatever reason the television I connected it did not automatically recognize it but that is neither here or there. :::Sound::: Once you hook this sound bar to your tv you can immediately hear the difference and in my opinion, it is a night and day difference. Most consumers know that television speakers are weak so getting a sound bar is a definite plus. This is 2.1 channel audio while I would prefer honestly to have a 5.1 or 7.1 setup, I just do not have the cash for that so 2.1 It is. I like the bass on the sub woofer it is great and rattles enough to make your neighbors dislike you. I connected it via Bluetooth and I can go through my play list while cleaning my apartment I really enjoyed that (not so much the cleaning part) The little remote is awesome and fits in my pocket while that isn't really a feature, I found it to be awesome. I am able to watch Netflix and hear the content I am watching with the Bass boost which is my preferred setting. :::Pros & Cons::: Pros: - All necessary cables included - Bluetooth audio streaming - ARC - Wireless sub woofer - DTS Virtual surround - Simple setup Cons: I am a simple person when it comes to audio fidelity. I have spent an ample amount of time with the soundbar and I can’t find anything to nitpick or complain about. In closing I just wanted a better audio experience and the LG SL5Y does just that. I have no need for all the higher end features. The SL5Y looks great, is really easy to setup and use and does not take up a whole lot of space. If you need a simple upgrade to your home theater then I say consider the SL5Y.

Great Sounding LG 2.1 Soundbar/Sub Upgrade

The LG 2.1 Channel Soundbar and Wireless Sub with DTS Virtual X, completely surprised me with its small size and big sound! I am a sound system person with a receiver, Center, Front L & R, Surround L & R with a sub. That is the only way I have ever tried to get that great theater like sound. This kind of system takes up a good bit of real estate with all those speakers, receiver and money. But this LG 2.1 Soundbar the Wireless sub doesn’t take up much room and has many ways to connect to your TV, adjust the sound and playback DTS Virtual X settings. Most importantly it will save you money if you want this simple setup. • The LG 2.1 Channel Soundbar is 2.2” H x 35” W x 3.3” D and fit perfectly in front of my 32 inch TV in the living area. The 6 inch sub (15.5” H x 6.7” W x 9.8” D) is supposed to stay fairly close to the LG Soundbar. The LG Sub is wireless and syncs to the LG 2 channel soundbar when you plug in the power. The sound coming from the 2 components really does sound better because the Soundbar is directional and the sub sound is omni-directional. This means the sound comes at you from the Soundbar like a Left and a Right speaker and a sub overall in sound. Included are mounting brackets with a few small screws, very small screws. It looked easy enough to mount but for my purposes the soundbar set in front of the HDTV. • A remote is included to control all features in all modes, including volume and power. The right side of the soundbar, has controls on the end. If you cannot get to them it is great to have the remote, a real nice feature for the LG 2.1 Soundbar. • Great sound doesn’t just have to be a typical 5.1 speaker sound system with Receiver. All those speakers and components can take up a lot of space and cost a pretty penny. With the LG 2.1 Soundbar with Wireless Sub is a great sound system alternative. The LG 2.1 Soundbar with Sub has a combined power of 400 watts. It can definitely get loud with no problem. You can literally hide the soundbar under the TV and place the sub behind a plant or entertainment stand. You really will have a hard time guessing where the sound will be coming from. (see picture). • Another thing I liked about this LG soundbar is the voice clarity. It is much easier to hear voices with the 2 channel soundbar. I will say in loud movies the voices can get kind of lost, simply overpowered by explosions. Use subtitles or adjust the treble or bass on the soundbar to hear the voices the way you want. • The LG soundbar by itself sounds decent with 2 channels. The sub really makes a difference for overall quality sound when plugged and kept close to the soundbar. You can hook up the LG 2.1 Soundbar with Sub several different ways. The wireless sub hooks up easily when you plug in the Sub. The Soundbar can be attached to the HDTV several ways including HDMI input, Optical input, Bluetooth, 3.5mm jack and USB input. Included with the LG Soundbar is an Optical Cable. This is the route I chose to get sound from my HDTV to the LG Soundbar. I gotta be honest here, the optical cable included is cheap, thin, has small connectors. (see picture). Whenever you setup the included Optical cable, it pops out at the slightest movement. This is very frustrating. Luckily I had a nice Optical cable in my cables’ drawer. So I plugged in that new Optical cable and had no trouble at all. The sound came on immediately; I didn’t even have to tell the HDTV about the optical connection, it recognized the setup and played the sound from the HDTV through the Optical cable which I had just plugged in. • The LG 2.1 Soundbar with Sub has different ways to adjust the sound for your personal taste. There is a Dot LED screen (incognito!) in the middle of the soundbar that lets you know what adjustments that you can see. You can change the treble +/- and bass +/- of the LG Soundbar 2 channel sound. You can also change the right amount sound modes. The ASC mode stands for Adaptive Sound Control where the soundbar plays and adapts to the levels that come from the HDTV appropriately. Standard is a simple mode where settings are level. There is also a Bass Blast for the Sub which amplifies the low frequencies and rounds out the sound really well. Lastly there is DTS Virtual: X sound mode. The LG 2 channel soundbar with the DTS Virtual: X simulates surround/height sounds. It is the best feature I found for movies and music. I watched the movies, Bumblebee and The Magnificent Seven (recent one) and loved how the sound enveloped the room. I also watched 2 concerts: John Mayer Live in LA and U2 ZooTV in Adelaide. The concerts sounded much better than I remember. While the LG Soundbar and Sub sounded great, overall it could not match a traditional 5.1 system. That is not to say the LG Soundbar has poor sound, far from it. It is up to you to listen and decide for yourself weighing in on space, money and sound. I have enjoyed the LG 2.1 Soundbar with Sub and DTS Virtual: X with movies and have liked the sound put out by the LG. • Another feature I thought well of is the weight of the soundbar. It is very sturdy and just about the right weight for what I would consider solid sound. The .1 component, the Sub was lighter than I expected. I wasn’t sure what to make of it until I played a movie through it. No worries at all about the Sub, it sounded tight and punchy, very good for it being a little light. I really enjoyed the sound of this LG 2.1 Soundbar with Sub. In my opinion the LG Soundbar sounded great for voices in Cable and Movies. Movies are probably the best application for the LG Soundbar. Realistic sound reproduction with DTS Virtual: X sounded really good for a soundbar and wireless sub. It has a simple setup, small footprint, yet powerful 2.1 system and sounds very good for its size. When you don’t have the room, money, or knowledge for a conventional speaker system setup, the LG 2.1 Channel Soundbar with Wireless Sub with DTS Virtual: X is worth checking out.

This soundbar and subwoofer combo is a real solid buy for those looking to upgrade their current television setup. Out of the box, there’s no much besides the meat and potatoes. One long sound bar and one thick subwoofer. A remote control, necessary wires, a manual and you’re on your way. Setup is quite simple as well, which is a big plus as the idea of airing up speakers can be daunting to some. You simply place the soundbar near the front of the room, most people put it at the base of the TV, and then place the subwoofer wherever you’d like. For me, I used the setup in my bedroom with the subwoofer on the opposite side of the room from the soundbar to give it a dynamic, surround sound type feel. The subwoofer and soundbar are paired already via Bluetooth out of the box but if it for some reason doesn’t work, there’s instructions to pair them manually. Besides plugging in the subwoofer and speaker to the wall, all you have to do is run the provided optic cable from the soundbar to your TV and you’re done! Super simple. If somehow your TV doesn’t have an optical component, you can use an HDMI cord instead. From that point on, you’ll have a sleek, mini sound system for you room! The soundbar is incredibly sleek, modern looking, and easy to use. The remote control that comes with the system can obviously be used if needed but you can easily program your universal remote to work with the soundbar as well, which is what I did. That way my comcast remote can control my TV, DVR, and sound system. Now as for the sound ourself, this is where results may very. The manual doesn’t really give much instructions on anything to do after setting up besides explaining basic functions like how to turn the system on and off, which anyone could hopefully figure out since there’s buttons on the side of the soundbar and a big ole power button the remote. That said... it’s kind of up to you as to how to figure out what you want from the soundbar besides just louder sounds. The remote has options to change the sound dynamics. You can create your own manual settings if you want to set the treble up very high, then the bass low, etc. The system also has a couple of presets as well: Standard, DTS V, ASC, and Bass. Once again, none of these are detailed in the manual as to what makes them different so if you go with a preset option you kind of have to just guess which one you’d like and use that as a starting point. Standard sounds flat compared to the other options, Bass is obviously very bass heavy, I’m still not sure what ASC is for, and DTS V is a premiere Dolby type sound, which is what I decided to go with after trying out all the options, as it’s the most full sounding. In regards to sound quality, what sticks out the most to me is how GREAT the bass sounds and how clearly they were able to differentiate between right and left speakers. I’ve used the soundbar for TV shows, movies, and games so far, and particularly with gaming it’s incredible to hear so distinctly where the bad guy might be coming from, if someone is over on the right side, etc. I’m closing, I’d recommend the system. LG didn’t reinvent the wheel with this one, and I would’ve liked to see a little more aide as to what the settings mean and how they differentiate in sound. That said, they made a really solid soundbar and an even greater subwoofer that are so dang easy to use and will look great in your home,m. This gives people the chance to take a big step up in the quality of their home theatre without having to buy expensive equipment that takes hours to setup.

I've been using the LG soundbar for about two weeks now and would recommend this product. One minor glitch, but fixed itself after a restart (see below). The setup was very easy, via the optical cable provided to my Vizio TV. It took about 5 minutes from the time it was out of the box to get it working. The bass speaker connected wirelessly to the sound bar without any issues. The only issue I had was that the first time I turned it on, I couldn't control the volume on the speaker with my TV remote. After fiddling with it for a few minutes and restarting the TV and speakers, everything worked properly. The sound quality is very good...better than I was expecting due to relatively small size (this is my first sound bar). I really like the bass on these speakers...it shakes the room if you put it high enough. Overall, very good product that performs better than I had expected.

LG - 2.1-Channel Soundbar with Wireless Subwoofer and DTS Virtual: X - Black Summary: I've previously owned a lower range LG sound bar that I used for my first original LG LCD TV about a decade ago. I love it. It had pretty good sound. Having been in the phase of my life where I lived in apartments, I needed the sound for immersion without the boom that would cause noise complaints and the ouch of the wallet. I hung onto it for a long while until I sold my first home. I passed it down, but until then it had serviced a few televisions (most recently a 65UB9500). Even more recently, I purchased a 75SM8670PUA and paired it to an SK9Y. The older TV 65UB9500 was moved to the bedroom. I thought the bedroom TV would be fine without a sound bar, but after been accustomed to the former unit for almost a decade and then also hearing the sound of the SK9Y on a daily basis, I decided to get something for it. I ended on the SL5Y because of price point and its availability. Additionally, its form factor was just large enough to be neatly tucked below the TV. Pros: - compact unit - sleek black design - foot print allows for placement under TVs with stands that have legs on the ends of the TV (possible even center braced ones) - the sound is much better than stock speakers on LCD TVs - great price point - the subwoofer is taller than it is deep allowing it to fit better with my cramped furniture arrangement - manual controls are on the side and easily accessible The unit features the following connectivity: - bluetooth - digital optical - HDMI (ARC) out - HDMI in Cons: - having been spoiled by the SK9Y, the sound isn't as rich when watching content on my main TV and then moving to the bedroom. This isn't a con, really, it is expected with a 500$ differing price point and feature set to boot (SK9Y is Atmos capable). - the dorky remote is large for its size and is the same as the one used for my SK9Y. its a shame given the smart remotes that accompany LG TVs. Fortunately, LG SimpLink removes most of the need to keep the remote. and smart home products like the Logitech Harmony Express almost entirely remove the need for all but one remote (with voice activation supported). - I still don't understand the placement of the power ports on the LG sound bars. They are positioned away from other ports and it makes it more of a nuissance to manage the cables. Use: The unit makes watch TV in the bedroom more enjoyable now as the subwoofer provides bass the built-in TV speakers could never provide. It sits tucked under the TV. In a new/larger space, all of it would be mounted - it comes with all of the necessary hardware for that purpose, too. All-in-all, for the 200$ish price point I think this is a good buy particularly since I am an LG enthusiast and have already owned one of their sound bars for about a decade (lasted through a multitude of interstate moves!) and just purchased one of their higher end sound bars. Definitely love the brand. Keep in mind: this is still a sound bar and a 2.1 channel one, at that. This replaced a 5.1 channel one I passed on because I was moving and thought I could do without. If you can spend a few more dollars, it would be worth it to do so. I wish I could include a video of the audio difference for my review, but some reason I am constrained by photos and size limitations. I hope the pictures are of some use to those considering the lower range LG sound bars.

I am a big Samsung fan. I purchased a Samsung 2.1 sound bar a year ago from Best Buy. I was happy with the quality. After listening to a demo of the SL5Y I purchased the LG 2.1 this time because, Best Buy did not have a great sale price on Samsung's. Both retailed for $279.99. I was surprised how much better the sound quality of the LG is over the Samsung. Better sound separation, better Base. even when not set in the Base mode. The Base mode setting was to much base for me. Maybe it is the Virtual: x chip that makes this so good... don't know. I hated moving away from Samsung , but this turned out to be a good move. If I need a 3rd sound bar I will defiantly buy the LG SL5Y. There are better sound bars out there if you want to spend $100 & up more for a 3.1 or 5.1. I paid $176.99. Money well spent!

I first bought an LG sound bar to match my tv. After a few days, one of the speakers in the actual bar went out. I returned it and picked up a Bose Solo 5 which didn’t have enough power and didn’t come with a subwoofer. Needless to say, I returned that one as well. I did some research and found this JBL one. I’d listed to music on their Bluetooth speakers before and loved the sound so I decided to give this one a try. Perfect!! I wish I would’ve bought this one to begin with. It was easy to set up, the sound is clear and crisp, it sounds good connected to the tv and the subwoofer does action movies well. The bar itself gives great volume and clean sound to the tv and phone when connected via Bluetooth. I caught it on sale so if you’re in the market, I’d definitely suggest this one. You won’t be disappointed!

I normally wait a few weeks before leaving a review. And so far I'm happy with the purchase. I picked this soundbar for $159 and I think it was a steal. The Sound bar doesn't look very stylish or high end. But once you hear it, its looks are misleading. The volume is not too loud. However, is very clear without any distortion. The Virtual DTS X truly comes alive after you purchase the LG SPK-8 rear surround speakers. Another bargain at $129. For about $300 I really got the the theater sound I've been looking for without denting the wallet. I really feel immersed when watching my favorite 4k UHD movies. Perhaps it's still to early, but I have not experience the connection cutouts many people complain about. I think you just have to make sure there isn't anything blocking the transmitter to the soundbar.

This sound bar gives me some great quality sound during movies, gaming, and live sports. Always wanted one, so I finally got one, and I never should’ve waited. One of the best purchases I’ve ever made. I used the tv for a weekend without the sound bar connected, then hooked it up, and it is a massively noticeable difference. And this is with a base model sound bar. Couldn’t afford the higher end model when I bought the tv, but this has been an excellent purchase. No regrets over the quality it has added to my experience.

I'm not an audiophile, but the various settings even I can understand and hear a difference. It's a great product and took me more time to unbox than to set up. Not going to be as good as a high end sound bar or surround sound system, but excellent for those who are in a smaller room and just looking for an added "oomph" to the volume of the TV.
