Customers are saying

Customers recognize the UltraGear 27" IPS LED QHD monitor's exceptional picture quality, high refresh rate, and vibrant colors as significant strengths. Many appreciate its value for the price and the effective performance of its G-Sync and FreeSync compatibility. However, some users point to the HDR's dimness and the monitor stand's design as potential drawbacks. A few also mentioned issues with IPS glow, though this is often considered inherent to IPS panel technology.

Great looking monitor, colors are awesome. The design fits well on my desk. Unfortunately there is one pixel in the bottom middle of the screen that is brighter than all the others when the screen is white. I can not see it when I am playing a game, but when I am watching YouTube, I see the bright pixel.

    Nice improvements, terrible quality control

I bought the LG GN850 because of the phenomenal reviews that their NANO IPS panel has been receiving lately, and I will agree, it is a nice panel. No black smearing or ghosting, and screen tearing is minimal even without running G-Sync. An issue I have is that I had to make many adjustments to achieve rich black levels and proper colors, forcing me to utilize 3rd party software that the monitor itself would otherwise make impossible. The base and stand for this monitor is vastly improved from the GL850, and I highly prefer this one over the GL850's stand. It feels sturdy, has a nice splash of red on the bottom, it features a wider footing and much thicker trunk which all around feels quality. IPS glow is a guaranteed issue with ALL IPS panels, and this one has it too. If you purchase this panel, expect IPS glow. The particular monitor I received has IPS glow more on the center upper and lower areas of the screen, as opposed to the corners which I saw on a previous GL850 panel. The glow, however, is not terribly noticeable, and for this individual monitor I received, is generally not an annoyance. The UI is odd in terms of your freedom to change the picture settings. I say this because out of the 8 preset "game mode" settings, not a single one allows you to fully adjust all the picture quality settings. Out of the following, Brightness, Contrast, Sharpness, Gamma, Color Temp, R/G/B, Black Level, and DFC, you will always find one or more are greyed out, and you simply cannot adjust the image to your full liking, without utilizing 3rd party software. I find this unacceptable, on any image device, be it televisions projectors, and most definitely PC monitors. The power cable features a cord that connects to the PC and a separate box you plug into the wall and the other end from the PC's cord. I haver an issue with the cord that connects to the PC simply because it's extremely thin and feels cheap. Previous PC monitors I've owned features a thicker cable, and generally felt more quality. I'm also fearful that if a cat or dog got anywhere near the power cable, it would take no time at all to instantly cause damage. It's just so flimsy. My ultimate issue and biggest reason for giving the monitor I received a 2 star rating and poor score for quality. The monitor I received arrived in a damaged box, which alone would be no problem. However, once I opened the box I found that the foam bag placed around the monitor screen itself, was torn down the back. I thought this was odd as everything inside was tightly packed, and there's no way the bag tore in shipping. As I gently lifted the monitor out of the insert I turned it over, I looked over the screen itself and to my surprise, there were not 1, not 2, but 3 scratches on the screen itself. I grabbed electronics monitor safe cleaner and a microfiber cloth and tried to see if these scratches were superficial or just smudges, but no, they are legitimate scratches... I even swore one was a hair of some kind, but no... This is infuriating for something you bought brand new... I believe this happened in packaging on LG's side, as the contents inside the box and very snug in their places, there is no way this happened in shipping. This forces me to feel LG threw this monitor very carelessly into the box and sent it out with no regard for quality control. I've included pictures of the scratches. Overall: The monitor has a decent quality stand, great response time, pretty picture (with 3rd party software), a less than ideal UI, and cheaper components than other monitor's I've owned. If this monitor had arrived in good condition, as expected when buying a brand new product, I'd be very happy. But receiving a scratched up product is unacceptable...

I love this monitor, the color is almost perfect and 1440p is definitely the sweet spot for 144FPS gaming. I mainly play first person shooters off it but racing games look amazing when you dial the quality to high and plus.

IPS glow is pretty "narly" and by that I mean there was a lot. On the left side. Other than that the contrast is low on paper but I think it is pretty good.

As a multi-functional user I will use thus monitor for watching movies, gaming, web browsing. Unfortunately this monitor fails with the backlight bleed. It is TERRIBLE! bottom left has a huge backlight bleed when watching dark scenes, the bottom left looks white/gray and the colors are off. This should NOT be the standard for a 450$ monitor! I thought maybe I got a bad unit so I ordered another one, And surprisingly the new unit has the same exact backlight bleed in the same spot!. Picture: top left and top right bottom right is not significant and can be ignored, however the bottom left is unacceptable.

I could have and would have loved this monitor. I love the IPS Panel that LG makes. Great monitor if you only want display port as an option for a computer/console. Most of the newer laptops are only coming with usb c or display port. Xbox only comes with hdmi. Do NOT buy for an Xbox or computer that doesn’t offer display port. My experience: My target was a monitor running 1440p at 120hz+ that would work with the Xbox series x and an MSI GS66 stealth as I’ll be targeting this for a pc build next year. The difference between the 27gn850 and 27gl850 aren’t huge but make a difference. With no usb 3 hub on the 27gn850, I wasn’t able to find a place to update the firmware on the monitor. I did tons of research on these models and could find anywhere that said the hdmi 2.0 connection only runs 100hz. People say turning off free sync allows it to go higher, but I found that to not be true. It’s disappointing that LG forces you to buy the “first oled with hdmi 2.1” to get 120hz on a display. They allow other manufacturers such as Dell and HP to use the same panel in the HP Omen 27i and the Dell Equivalent. I settled with the HP Omen 27i and couldn’t be happier.

This monitor was recommended by a number of pro reviews, and I can see why. My last monitor was a 4K 60 Hz TN panel, and I cannot stress enough how amazing the colors are on this monitor once you get it calibrated, while I hardly notice the loss of resolution going from UHD to QHD. This monitor is utterly ideal for someone switching between gaming and content creation and/or productivity work, but unable to spend around $1000 on a monitor. The contrast ratio is low (that's the nature of IPS), which makes HDR impractical even if the monitor can accept HDR input. Besides, some games don't know what to do with the extra 2 bits of color and everything comes out looking dark. If you watch a lot of videos and don't play games, you might like HDR mode, otherwise, stick with SDR on this monitor if you don't want to switch back and forth between the two modes. The black is somewhat uneven, which can be distracting if you're watching a video with a dark scene in a dark room. Out of the box, the images will probably be a little dark with oversaturated colors. Make sure you run the Windows color calibration tool to get the brightness and contrast settings on the monitor correct for your environment, then download the drivers from the LG website to make sure you're using the correct color profile. You'll get beautiful and accurate colors this way. It took a fair bit of fiddling to get the high refresh rate to work, but that's Windows' fault, not the monitor's. The high refresh rate is buttery smooth in games that can take advantage of it, as expected. Unlike some other LG monitors with similar prices and capabilities, this one is G-Sync compatible, which will be important to you if you use an Nvidia GPU. The stand is extremely sturdy, and best of all, can pivot, so you can rotate the monitor to portrait mode at any time, a great feature for digital comics, or anything that involves large amounts of text (e.g. message boards, PDFs, social media, etc.). There are cheaper QHD high refresh rate monitors that don't look as good, and better-looking monitors that cost an arm and a leg. This is arguably the best bang for the buck in this price range.

Hands down the best monitor for Series X

This monitor is excellent for the series x. You can run 1440p at 120 without any issues ( you need to turn FreeSync off to do so) and runs really smooth. This monitor will also run 4k @ 60 without problems (with or without freesync). I really was hesitant on console gaming on a monitor, but this choice of monitor has been a game changer. Don't worry about the HDR reviews, your not using this monitor for that, it has great colors and the response is absolutely on point for competitive gaming. I play pubg, bf5, and MW on this monitor and am truly satisfied. The size and quality of this monitor and the price, is truly on point. If you care about the HDR and 4k @ 120 (because of HDMI 2.1), get a LG CX. If you want a quality monitor, get this one. Don't be fooled or even think that the HDR quality matters on this piece because the HDR that it has does make a difference and look great. HDR, lol, if you want true HDR get the CX because that's what you're looking for. Flat out, if you want to game on a monitor with your series x get the LG 27GN850-B.
