4 star movie, 3 star blu ray. "Like Water for Chocolate" is based upon the novel, "Como Agua Para Chocolate" which is a South American idiom used to describe someone who is sexually frustrated, and there is certainly plenty of that here. The novel and screenplay were written by Laura Esquivel, and the film is directed by Laura Esquivel's husband, Alfonso Arau. This is a multi-sensory experience of a tale of forbidden love centered around the preparation and eating of food. Blu-ray, picture quality is average, could be better, dvd appears to have some missing scenes, Widescreen 1.85:1 aspect ratio, No special features.

This movie is a well done piece of work of Mexican culture. It will especially appeal to people of this culture as with any ethnic work from any country. It is remindful of the Hispanic leg of Babel. Worth seeing but not a great one.

Mind you I do not speak or understand Spanish very well, and this movie is in Spanish with subtitles. It kept me very entertained with the love between the two main characters and how they over came so many obstacles.

Story line is great, history,culinary delight. This movie is the full package. Laughter, tears and drama. Sheer delight have watched many times.

I was 18 years old. I watched it again and forgot how intensely erotic this movie is. If you want to witness the power of love, this is the movie to watch.
