Great universal remote for home theater

I highly recommend the Logitech Harmony 665. It is very powerful for the price and explains why many expert reviewers rate it number one for inexpensive universal remotes. It is easy to setup using the LogiTech MyHarmony application which must be downloaded and installed on your laptop or PC. My use of the term “easy” is relative to your understanding of how everything is connected together in your home theater. So before you setup the remote, you really need to understand how all your devices are connected to one another and through which ports on each device they are connected. This is very important if you want everything to work correctly when you use the remote and you don’t want to get overly frustrated setting it up. The setup guide that comes with the remote contains a chart for you to fill in all your devices by make and model. But it doesn’t provide space for the ports on the devices and to which ports they are connected on your other devices. I recommend you create a diagram and/or list everything out on paper before you start programming the remote. This will make it much easier and make it less likely to make mistakes. That all said, the remote lets you operate your home theater either by Activity or by individual Device. Activities turn on and configure all the devices required for a particular activity and is the most likely way you will want to use the remote. Activities also turn off the devices not included in a particular activity. So you must know which devices are required to perform a particular activity. For example, if you want to watch cable TV, you create the “Watch TV” activity and you tell it to include your TV, AV receiver, and your cable box. This is all accomplished by a “wizard” like interface that steps you through configuring each device used in the activity and how each device functions within the activity. Once you have setup all the activities for your home theater (ex. Watch a blu-Ray, watch Smart TV, listen to music, etc.), the MyHarmony application “syncs” everything to your remote via the USB cable provided. After that, you test it out by starting with all your devices turned off then press the button for each activity you created when you setup the remote. If you find that something doesn’t work the way you intended, you just have to go back to the MyHarmony application, make changes (or start over if you prefer), and re-sync the remote. You can also customize the function of individual buttons using MyHarmony if you find any of the default functions do not do something you need. Once it is configured you can control all components in your home theater with just the one remote. Very simple. But as I said, you need to know your home theater system to set it up properly and it won’t fix any mistakes you might have made connecting and configuring all your devices to work together properly. If you messed that up, no universal remote is going to be able to make it all work right.

Easy setup except for one small problem ...

I bought this remote to replace our cable TV box remote that is no longer working 100% of the time (our local cable TV provider has shut down their local office due to Coronavirus and I couldn't get a replacement remote from them). The special arrangements that Best Buy had for curbside pickup after online purchase allowed me to get this remote during the Coronavirus pandemic much faster than Amazon would have shipped it to me. I figured that buying a "smart" universal remote would allow me to use the cable box, TV, Roku, and Blu-ray with one remote. The setup for three of the devices was easy (TV, Roku, Blu-ray) but I had a minor problem with the cable box setup. The default settings for our Motorola cable box from Suddenlink did not work and the Logitech software directed me to use the original remote that came with the cable box to teach the Logitech remote its commands. Enough of the buttons on the old cable remote worked and the Logitech remote was able to learn its commands. But if I had lost the cable remote or if the remote was broken more than it was, then I would have been out of luck. But that was the only problem I experienced with the setup. Having the ability to store up to 23 cable channel favorites was pretty useful. And the Logitech software stores the settings which will make setting up a future remote even easier.

    Fantastic Economy-Class Universal Remote

No one needs a universal remote. Seven different remotes will control your system. You want a universal remote. You want, at the very least ,to start with this remote. Disclaimer - I am a self employed home theater installer. Yes, I am strongly advocating that you stop reading this review now and just buy the remote. No, I'm not getting paid to write this...not until you call me to set it up. ;) I usually keep at least one Harmony 665 on hand at all times. This remote, when programmed correctly, is very effective at controlling almost all home theater systems and it's super affordable with minimal compromise. If you're doing more than just turning on a TV to watch cable or satellite, then this remote is a necessary convenience. This remote has an LCD window to add more commands than the hard buttons below, but all buttons/commands are raised buttons. No touch screen. Yay!!! Personally, I like to memorize button locations by feel. I don't like to look down, find button, gingerly tap a command, and then look up to confirm signals were successfully received. I hate touch screen remotes. I also like a remote that fits comfortably in my hand. This model does it all. I recommend this specific remote to clients, family, and friends. The only things that could make this remote greater is a rechargeable battery with charging cradle (see Harmony Elite - half touch screen...so...meh...halfway to greatness) and buttons with words instead of symbols (you might be surprised by how many people don't know that the triangle pointing to the right is a play button. Nothing says play like "PLAY"). This remote's only major pain point (other than two AA batteries) is also it's saving grace, the HELP button. User error is effortlessly corrected with the HELP button. Were you aiming at the ceiling when you should have been pointing at your system? Dang. Now the TV is on and the speaker system is off. No problem. Aim the remote, press and release HELP, and then answer the follow-up questions on the remote display to get your stuff back in sync. While there are remotes out there that will control more advanced systems with flawless execution, it's hard to beat the price on this remote. This is an Essential addition to your Audio/Video system. ;)

This remote is awesome. Not only can it learn from other remotes, but it has thousands of stored devices. There is also an app that’s installed on your pc to configure with great ease. This is a 10 device remote!!! Color display!!! Rechargeable batteries (sold separately)!!! You won’t find better for this price.

Works TV, cable box, receiver, and BD player. Program it up and it works. Can't get in too deep on actual components right out of the box, but I bet with some effort it would.

    Decent Universal Remote

I was looking for a cheapish universal remote for my home theater, and this one does the job pretty well. All of my gear is in a closet except for a projector on a ceiling mount behind the seating, so I have a wall plate remote receiver below the screen that is wired into the closet. The IR that comes out of the remote is strong enough that it hits the receiver and the projector behind me without any issue. You really don’t need to aim the remote in any direction. The computer programming via USB to the remote is easy to use, and you can add additional commands that aren’t in the default setups without problem. It is very configurable, and my wife, who hates complicated remote controls, picked up how to use it in minutes and has been complaint free. The only thing that makes me take one star away from the review is that occasionally it seems to "forget" how to operate one piece of equipment or other. For example, one day it will stop working with just my projector, while still controlling everything else. The only way to get it back to full functionality is to pop a battery out and back in it reboot the controller. After that, it will work fine for a couple of weeks. It’s happened to me about three times now. Even if it needs an occasional reboot, it is a nice remote. It is good enough that I don’t feel compelled to keep the original remote controls in the room, like I have for my previous universal remotes.

Watered down 880 options with improved performance

I am replacing the ancient Harmony 880 which allowed for more devices as opposed to the 665's 10 device max. It also allowed me to assign a button to a device which was not needed for the activity whereas the 665 doesn't permit this. For example, you might want to have your 'lights' assigned to certain buttons in every activity. For this to be so, the 665 needs to include them in the activity and then turns them on when you enter the activity! Obviously, that's not desirable. Aside from this, I find the remote very easy to use and the sensitivity of the buttons seems great. It was easy to set up my six activities except I needed to troubleshoot my TV's antenna input for some reason. I was able to work this out although it wasn't clear how. The software is generally more limiting than the old 880 software but at least you can still learn IR commands from remotes. I like the drag and drop features in the software where you can customize buttons by dragging the commands to the target button. Unfortunately, you can't order your activities. I used to be able to this with the 880 as well. Most importantly, it seems to work very well and the ergonomics are an improvement. The buttons are soft as opposed to being “clicky” like the 880 was but that's a matter of taste. I might prefer this. In 2021 there shouldn’t be such a price difference between this IR model and the Bluetooth/Wi-Fi capable models in my opinion but the value here is fair. I started to have many issues with the 880's buttons. The consistency of the 665 is worth the purchase.

Can’t live without this thing. Only thing I wish it could have is more quick activity buttons or extra ability to control multiple devices without having to use the menu. Minor complaint. Still makes life much easier. Also, i don’t like the online app required for programming. It should be easier.

Most impressive feature is the tilt sensor that back lights the buttons. I like it. I'm using it to control LG OLED, Bose ST 300, Xbox One X, & Motorola DVR Advanced. The software is user friendly. You can set up activities such as "Watch Netflix." Another cool one is "Watch Apple TV"

First of all, let me say I love this product. It works very well and has replaced no less than 5 remotes I typically use. In addition, it's ability to issue 5 or 6 commands in a row, timed perfectly, is a lifesaver for me. The features and execution of them are top-notch. Why only 4 stars? The first one I bought lost buttons after just 2 years. This review is for my second, one, because at least 5 buttons on the first one were nonfunctional within 24 months and it became useless at that point. (note: No foods, no drinks, no foreign material have ever touched the unit, it has it's own sealed cabinet next to my sofa). BTW, my first one was $99. Now I think the 665 might be discontinued, and I got this one for $59.95 which is why I went ahead and tried a second one. Other than the lack of durability, I highly recommend this remote.

As was said by other reviewers, the set-up for the remote was relatively pain-free. The most time was spent finding model numbers of the components I was linking to it + what source the TV needed to be on for a particular component. This device has simplified TV watching considerably.

I purchased this product to operate my tv, cable box, blu ray player, soundbar, and fire stick from one remote. I purchased the product online from Best Buy and it arrived in 2 days even with covid restrictions. The remote was an easy setup with a laptop. The hardest part was getting serial/model numbers from my tv, and all the other components. The remote does a fairly good job switching from cable tv component to the blu ray, and fire stick. The remote DOES NOT control fire stick functions, it does put the tv and soundbar in the correct inputs but I do then have to use the fire stick remote. The remote works great with my cable box and Blu-ray player. Occasionally the remote will not put all the components in the correct configuration but it was usually user error in not pointing the remote so it picks up all the components. The remote walks you through any problems and gives instructions how to fix the problem (ex. If switching from Blu-ray to cable, the soundbar output might remain on the Blu-ray channel...a few clicks and the problem is fixed). I like the product, there is a little learning curve but overall it works for me.

    2nd Logitech Harmony Remote

These are terrific universal remotes, with outstanding customer service from Logitech's technical guys. We've owned a Harmony remote for several years now. The old one hit the tile floor and became unreliable. Not its first drop, mind you. So we got this one. It took about 10 minutes to get it "cloned" to the old one and up and running. The Harmony remote is simply intuitive to use. Regardless of the complexity of your system, you can tune the remote to do exactly what you want. So if you want to watch movies using your cable box for channel selection, your TV for video, and your soundbar or receiver for sound, all the controls on the remote work as you'd expect. Channel changing happens on the cable box, volume on the audio equipment. Same thing with Netflix, Disney+, etc. You decide what part of your system, does what part of the display, sound, video picking, etc. Then the remote keys send signals to the right device. After using it for a few days you forget how amazing it really is. AND, if you are doing one thing and choose another thing, it turns on/off the right devices, changes inputs/outputs and in a few seconds you are doing a different program. After 40 years of universal remotes, this simple, elegant device is exactly what I was looking for. Amazing for $50.

The Geek Squad recommended the Harmony universal remote to me after installing my new LG TV. I was very happy they did as using 3 separate remotes to control the DVR, DVD player, etc was very confusing to me. It was the perfect addition to my new TV and made using it very easy.
