Luc Besson's lone wolf noir at it's best on 4K UHD

There's a subgenre of films dealing with slick action and a somewhat pensive quality coming from a central figure... be that an assassin, a spy, a samurai or a getaway driver. Think Ghost Dog, Le Samourai, Ronin etc. Leon (The Professional) is arguably the very best of them all. Impeccably performed by a cast of Jean Reno (as the titular hitman, Leon), Natalie Portman (her first appearance as a young protege in need of protection), and the always amazing Gary Oldman (as a dangerous, corrupt detective), masterfully shot and scored, and setting it's action to a very French set of psychological plumbs that make it seem far more human, heady and important than so many of it's contemporaries in the genre. You will root for the hero, hope for the heroine, and recoil from the villain all while marveling at the scenarios, the action, the intrigue and the entire composition of the film. If you're not yet a fan of the genre, it will make you one. The 4K UHD itself is astounding. One of Sony's absolute best UHD transfers. The 35mm scan deliveries so much fullness and detail in greater resolution, the expanded color provides so much texture and warmth, while he HDR application is so tastefully applied that it gives you the sense you're watching a real film projection from 1994, pristine condition on opening day, right in your home. This UHD release is celebrated by both fans of lesser known films and video quality addicts for a good reason.

I think this was Natalie Portman's first movie and what a tour-de-force it is. Jean Rene is great and so is Gary Oldman! 4K UHD makes this a must get!

How much better can Leon get beyond what we've been given in the Extended Cut and the Steelbook for it? A 4K scan with a digital copy, of course. This movie is one of a few that have seen 4K remasters and digital copies with extras added in (I cite the Oldman 4K Trilogy: Dracula, Fifth Element, and this). If you haven't owned the movie yet on Blu-Ray, this is a good place to invest into it. It has the same extras as the previous release, in the same quality. The only benefit is it has a digital copy packed in, much better audio, and the video is a little bit better (granted it'll be a difference on a 4K display). While Fifth Element got a swath of added content for its 4K release, and Dracula also has a lot of added content thrown in (but the content in that is in 1080p while Fifth was lucky to get extra content at SD, let alone HD), Leon retains the same quality content as the prior release. With a movie like Leon, we're surely at the spot where we've gotten the greatest amount of content for it, to date. The only thing better this movie can use is perhaps a 25h Anniversary release in 2019, and get a reunion of Jean Reno (Leon), Natalie Portman (Matilda) and Gary Oldman (Stansfield) for interviews...even Danny Aiello if he's still around. Overall, I think anyone who has yet to get the movie should look to this one. It's the best one of the lot I've found. If price is an issue, wait for a sale on it. But some movies are worth their initial asking price. This is one of them.

The best hit man movie to date. Natalie Portman is great. But the hitman Leon, is awesome. This movie rocks.

Sony is trying to tap into the Criterion audience with their Supreme Cinema Series and the Leon: The Professional is part of the first wave ( Along with Bram's Stoker's Dracula and The Fifth Element) that has the film rescanned at 4K resolution and converted to HD and the transfer blows away previous transfers. Also Dolby Atmos for tor improved surround sound for those that have the proper decoder. The few extra features were ported over from the previous edition and if there was a bummer here it's the lack of anything new to add. Sadly Luc Besson is not one for deleted scenes or audio commentaries as that would have been interesting to listen to. All of the SCS titles also come in unique lucite cases with leather binding with bullet holes embossed in it. They look awesome, but you need to be careful as they are easily scratched and I have been careful to not open them too wide. This transfer is also available in a non SCS edition in a standard blu-ray case, but this is really the best and if picked up on sale as I did, worth the price.
