Doris Day and James Cagney portray the turbulent life of Ruth Etting. Excellent musical numbers. Phenomenal Cinescope Color with dazzling direction..

This has always been one of my favorite movies from the 1950s. Great performances by Day and Cagney. Phenomenal video and audio quality. Warner Archives does it again.

New and old Cagney fans alike will enjoy this movie. This is a great story of an over-possessive gangster who loves and controls a woman who tries to love him back. It amazes me how, no matter the years this movie takes place, how many women may be able to relate to this character even today. To me, that is one of the traits of a movie that make it really good movie, if not great. The characters are rich and memorable. And say what you will about Doris Day, but her dramatic portrayal of the emotionally abused singer of Cagney's dreams is quite brilliant. I first watched this movie after a late night of a Cagney mini-marathon on his birthday. I didn't realize how great he was and how much I would enjoy him until I gave him a chance, which is what I suggest you do with with movie.
