Decent hearing protection, voice amplifying mic

I’ll start by saying that I work in an area where noise easily can reach 100db. I found that the included foam earplugs provide just enough noise reduction to make them dependable for hearing protection around loud engines. I opted for the standard fit that are already on. It comes with a smaller and bigger foam plugs for you to try. They were surprisingly comfortable and I did not have to fiddle with them too much to get them into my ears. However I did feel like the control modules are a little too big. Your usage may vary but the cable isn’t the longest and I could feel the controls rubbing against my next neck when I turned my head in either direction. The cable itself is braided and did not irritate my skin when wearing for long periods. One on side you have the on / off button and volume control. On the other side you have the on off switch for the built in mic and volume control. I thought it was a neat feature. I’m not allowed to listen to music while I’m working but having a separate on off switch for the mic is cool. When someone came to talk to me, I flip on the switch and it will amplify the persons voice so you can hear them clearly without needing to remove the earplugs. I was able to hear my coworker asking for something clearly from about 30 feet away even though there was some loud noise going on. I didn’t like the way the ambient voice / sound microphone sounds while music is playing so I pause the music or just completely turn it off when I plan on using them for the voice / mic feature. Sound quality is better than I expected out of these.they won’t blow your mind away but I would say that they are good enough for casual music listening. I tend to listen to podcasts on my downtime and these are good enough. They sound a little on the flat side of the EQ spectrum. Not much bass, and just enough treble to balance the mids. But if you’re more concerned with hearing protection, then this is a good thing. After all, you don’t want to drown out everything completely if you plan on using these for safety purposes. All in all, I think they are a decent value, if you are looking for decent hearing protection and the ability to listen to audio and ambient voices / sounds. If you plan on using these at work, check with your employer before hand. I know some places won’t allow them because of the Bluetooth feature.

Love the idea of the buds, but for me the execution is a little off.
Sound
Quality is good and the sound filtering is good, but there is some feedback with the sound filtering turned on. Changing the level just can decrease the feedback (lower = less noticeable) but it doesn't ever go away and decreasing the filter level lets in more sound
Dampening
I'm a little confused as to how much dampening the buds are able to do. The packaging says 40 decibel on the front and 25 decibel on the back. Same with BB webpage and manufacturer webpage overview.
Fit
Unfortunately for my ear canals, the foam tips are still too big even with the smallest ones included. The tips are not as “spongy” as a pair of traditional ear plugs, so they cannot compress as much. When compressed they expand quite rapidly, which means they cannot really conform to your ear canal and consequently for me, they begin to push themselves out of my ear.
I think the best change would be if they were more pliable like a traditional set of foam ear plugs.
Notes
The length of the setup us just a tad short to be able to put behind the neck, which would also put the controls out of reach.
Looped under the neck, it does kind of hang there, but there is a clip included to help keep them closer to the chest. However I couldn't get a good position to keep the controls nearby and also keep from pulling the buds out of my ear when turning my head. Again it didn't help that they don't fit me completely either.
Pro Tip- the Bluetooth button turns the buds on and off, HOWEVER, the Ambient pass through is controlled with a physical switch. This also has to be turned off or it will drain the battery. If Bluetooth is off the Ambient pass through is also off, but the switch doesn't recognize that it will drain the battery.
Out of the box the battery percentage was at 70. Used for 2 hours with mixed usage of calls, music, and Ambient On/Off and it still said 70% after 2 hours. Next day went to use and would not turn on. Noticed the switch was on, charged up via PC USB port and 2 hours later were fully charged.
Controls are easy to learn but the instructions didn't mention the Ambient switch still drawing power if left on when buds are powered off. Not a big deal...IF you don't forget.

I am a DIY, and I like to make many home improvements. Working around the house using these earphones, I protect my ear, and I can enable ambient sound to hear my surrounding. I frequently use foam earplugs at home for day naps and night sleep, so using earphones that use foam ear tips isn’t an issue. The foam is super soft, which helps them stay in your ear and no irritation. The foam also does an excellent job of blocking ambient noise. I use it a lot when using loud lawn equipment or power tools. The sound quality of audio and phone calls is pretty good. When someone approaches me to talk to me, I don't need to take them off; I use the awareness mode control to switch on the ambient noise. I can adjust the ambient noise volume depending on the background noise level. Battery life is good, recharges fast, and lasts a couple of hours. Compared to traditional noise protection earmuffs, these earphones are much better. They are comfortable to wear, don’t fall or move around, significantly cut out background noise, easily turn on/off ambient noise, enjoy listening to music, and are suitable for hands-free phone calls. Overall, I am satisfied with these new earphones.

The Lucid Audio Saf-T-Ear is a Bluetooth connected noise reducing headphone set. These are aimed at users looking to protect their hearing in a noisy environment and retain the benefits of a connected headset. The headphones are not a True Wireless bud, but are connected via a cord between the 2 eartips. Included with the Saf-T-Ear are 3 tip sizes, a micro USB charge cord, and a collar clip.
Ratings for the Saf-T-Ears are based on the NRR scale for noise reduction and are on a range of 0-30. The Saf-T-Ears have a rating of 25db. To calculate how much noise these reduce you subtract 7 from 25 and then divide by 2 to get 9db. So a 100db sound would be reduced by 9db to 91. Its really weird that its not more straightforward than this. However, some equipment has NRR DB recommendations based on this scale (my shop compressor recommends 20db if working in an enclosed space with it on). This rating is confusing when compared to imagery on the box where it provides up to 40db of noise reduction. This rating refers to the max noise reduction across a range of frequencies (there’s a chart on the back of the packaging showing this). Frequencies above 4kHz can see a noise reduction of 40db and up. The NRR is pretty useful in cases where equipment manufacturers have recommended a certain protection level threshold while using the equipment.
The Saf-T-Ears have 2 sets of controls on the cord – left side is the ambient sound control and right side is the Bluetooth control. End to end my cord is about 19.5” long which is long enough to drape around the backside of your neck, but still short enough if you want to let the cord hang under your chin. The instructions for wearing the buds tells you to squeeze and roll the foam tips in your fingers before inserting into your ear, and to hold it for a bit to let them expand into place. This is the same procedure for using foam ear plugs for hearing protection. In my experience with other earbuds I wear the medium tips. I found the medium tip on these to be a little snug, but the smalls were too small. I made my peace with using the mediums and found that I really had to squish them down and insert into my ears quickly because of how fast they expand back out. Using the small size gave me a poorer seal, but the medium created a solid seal in my ear to keep those sharp noises from being felt.
The two set of controls function independently of each other. You can have your phone connected to Bluetooth and listening to music and have the ambient off. You can use the ambient setting without connecting any device to the Bluetooth. This is nice to have since sometimes you need that flexibility. The ambient controls are pretty straightforward – there’s a slider switch to turn it on and off and 2 button change the ambient volume up or down. There are 3 levels to control how much ambient noise is piped in – it defaults to the lowest setting. For Bluetooth connecting it to my phone was easy enough. There are 3 buttons to contend with on the Bluetooth side – the multi-function Bluetooth button, and volume up/down buttons. The Bluetooth button has different functions based on how many times you press it or hold it. For a phone call: 1 button push picks up or ends the call, 2 pushes redials the last incoming or outgoing call. During a call and there’s another incoming call: 1 button push ends the original call and picks up the new one, 2 pushes puts the original call on hold and switches to the new call, and an additional 2 button pushes switches back and forth between the calls. For media: 1 button push works to play/pause, and pressing and holding for 2 seconds will start your phone assistant. The volume buttons have an additional function while playing media – press and hold the up/down button to skip tracks either forward or backwards.
Using the Saf-T-Ears at work was pretty nice. I have been working in my prototype lab and using my impact driver, Dremel, and saw. These items easily climb up over 100db in use – I think my impact comes in at 104db and the saw/Dremel can get up to 120db depending on what I’m cutting. The saw and Dremel are both higher pitched noise makers while the impact registers in the middle of the frequency range. At higher pitches, according to the attenuation chart, I can expect a mean db reduction of around 40. This brings the worst offenders down in to the 80db and under range for what I actually hear. It was nice to have this level of hearing protection while being able to listen to my music and even answer some calls. I’ve probably worn them for 10 hours this last week – most of that time with my phone connected or the ambient sound on. I was happy to see the battery life go for this long.
Sound quality of the buds is decent – I wasn’t blown away by their performance, but the bass was pretty solid due to the seal of the ear tips. Sound range was pretty even across the board though with good clarity throughout the range. I would have liked a little more dynamic sound out of the stock EQ, but it looks like I need to configure the EQ on my phone to get the settings I would like. This isn’t a deal breaker, and from what I can tell the buds should have the capability to keep up with more dynamic sound.
Call quality is decent as well. I can hear the person on the other end perfectly clear. As far as how they hear me, it’s a little mixed. I need to have the cord hanging below my chin to get the best pickup of my voice. If its around the back of my neck its more muted due to the mic being further away. I prefer to wear them around the back of my neck, so it’s something for me to deal with. The background sound suppression works great when I am not speaking. I can be in an elevated noise environment and it still cuts off the background sound. While I speak though, background sound can be picked up by the person on the other end.
The ambient sound from the awareness mode is also a bit of a mixed bag. If you are outdoors and its mildly breezy its not very good. The mics heavily pick up the air sound and amplify it. Also, if you are around a fan or something that moves air or drones on then the ambient mode is affected as well. It wants to grab that droning noise and bump it up. I found in a perfectly quiet room the ambient mode created a white noise effect even on the lowest setting. So, if you are close to something already generating some white noise it just compounds it. In other environments, absent these things if possible, it works great. I could assemble my prototype with my impact while carrying on a conversation with a coworker, and still protect my hearing. Every time the impact went off the buds would cut out the ambient noise and would provide me the full protection. I tested it doing a lot of things actually – slamming doors, hammering, cutting on my miter, dumping a scrap bin, etc. In every case the ambient mics picked up the sound and stopped piping it in. It didn’t seem to matter if it was a low frequency or high frequency noise – both were equally tuned out by the ambient mode.
Overall, these are pretty good safety focused buds. The 25db NRR rating is high enough for most work environments. Combine that with being able to play music or connect to your phone, and it makes for a great combo. The ambient mode works well for certain use cases, and I absolutely see its value. However, it has several limitations that render it less than ideal.

Ear Protection w/ Ambient Control

--- SETUP ---
The setup is typical of any Bluetooth headphones. Hold the Bluetooth button to turn on and pair with your phone. I switched the earbud foams with the smaller ones that were included for best comfort.
--- FEATURES ---
The key feature of these earbuds is the safety feature for protection from loud noises. They reduce noise by 25 decibels.
--- PERFORMANCE ---
The performance was pretty good. You have the ability to turn the ambient sound on and off as well as adjust the level of noise you want when on. There are separate volume buttons to raise and lower the volume of your audio. I tested these in two places. The first time, I was adding air to my wife’s tires on her car. Our air pump is pretty loud. Combined with the noise of the car, that’s a lot of noise added. Because I turned on the ambient sound, I was able to clearly hear my wife from a safe distance while my ears felt protected from the pump and running car.
The actual reason why I got these was because I am a dance instructor by night. At least three times a week, I am at a dance club dancing near giant speakers. An ear doctor told me that my hearing had decreased, so I decided to protect my ears with these. I could still clearly hear the Salsa songs without interfering with the timing of the dance. I was not out of place wearing these, as other people wear similar protection. However, I liked that I could hear a different song or my own phone notifications while I waited for the next dance.
--- EXPECTATIONS ---
The product meets my expectations. There is only one caveat that I’d like to address. When you turn on the ambient sound, if I accidentally covered the outside of the earbud, I would get a high-pitched noise similar to when you place a microphone in front of a speaker. This is often referred to as feedback. It only happened when I touched and covered the earbud, which I wouldn’t do intentionally, but you will end up doing it when putting on the earbuds or removing them. Other than that, I do enjoy their performance.
--- APPROVAL ---
I highly recommend this product for people who are around loud noises regularly and wish to protect their ears but still want to be able to hear the sounds around them.

The Saf-T-Ear bluetooth earbuds by Lucid are a great way for someone to have ear protection without sacrificing the features of a normal bluetooth headset! They feel very similar to a set of ear plugs. The tips, which come in several different sizes, are made of very squishy foam that fills your ear canal to seal out any unwanted loud noises. The ear plugs can hang around your neck when not needed or not in use. They come with a clip that you can use to secure them to the top of your jacket or shirt so they don't slide off. The cord has a fabric type material that is comfortable around your neck. There are two sets of controls on the headset. On one side, there is the bluetooth pairing button, the volume up button, and the volume down button. On the other side, there is an on/off switch and two volume control buttons. The on/off switch controls only the feature of the earbuds that lets the person wearing them hear the outside noises! I really like the ability to turn that on and off separately without effecting the bluetooth audio coming from your phone. If you want to hear noises from your surroundings, turn the switch on and it will let the noise through in conjunction with any music or phone calls you may have going on! Pairing the headset was simple as well. As soon as I turned on the headset it was in pairing mode. All in all, I think this is a great option for someone who works in loud, hearing damaging environments. Have all the great features of hearing protection without sacrificing the functions of your normal bluetooth headset!

Got these cool-looking, industrial appearing, Saf-T-Ear Bluetooth Earbuds and was impressed with the packaging and details. Opening was straightforward and simple. Inside you'll find the earbuds themselves, as well as additional tips, case (really a plastic bag) collar clip and charging cable (micro USB). The earbuds are safety yellow and grey plastic, with yellow and black braided cord. The provided eartips are "foam" types, and a good seal is critical to assure the rated noise reduction and safety. It has two separate control pads that feel a little cheap but functional. One is for the Bluetooth controls (Volume Up/Down and Play/Pause. The other pad is for Ambient Awareness Control (On/Off, Volume Up/Down). Use these sparingly based on your surroundings so you don't accidentally amplify the very sound you are attempting to block. In fact, where I work, I might not ever use the ambient mode. The high noise level makes ambient mode pretty much unnecessary. The earbuds work well in Bluetooth mode, allowing for phone calls/music in high noise areas, The background noise all but prevents callers from hearing me, but I could hear them clearly. In the safety, noise blocking modes, the earbuds worked well with both sustained and transient noise. I cannot determine if the levels of noise reduction is truly 40 decibels, but I believe that it is based more on frequency than overall. So, these are good overall safety noise reduction buds, with bluetooth capability, that have a somewhat limited ambient mode. Don't necessarily have any groundbreaking abilities but no deal breakers either. I believe they are well worth their price.

Standard foam ear plugs have a noise reduction rate of about 33 Db. And the Saf-T-Ear headphones have a noise reduction rate from 25 Db and Up to 40 Db. With that being said, I would trust these for protecting my hearing while mowing grass and performing indoor construction. But for louder events such as shooting, jackhammering or working on an airfield I would still use professional ear protection.
With that out of the way, I tested these headphones for 3 days and I think they work well for day-to-day hearing protection. When wearing them in my ears they fit securely, feel comfortable, and easily pass a shake test. The safety yellow color on the buds is very prominent and provides a visual cue that you are wearing earbuds and not ignoring people. The earbud controls are large, which makes them easily accessible while wearing work gloves. Also, each side of the buds has its own controls. One side is for Bluetooth and the other is for allowing ambient sound into the buds.
When it comes to sound, they sounded good enough to keep you entertained. The area where these buds really shined was in the ambient sound department. When I flicked the ambient sound switch to the on position, I could hear every voice around me was amplified while other sounds were reduced.
Overall, I think these buds are good and I recommend them for casual hearing protection.

You Have Your Music and Work Too

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
I haven’t always used hearing protection. In my younger years I attended loud concerts – which literally caused pain when close to the stage, used power equipment, attended stock car races, and engaged in conversations with loud participants – all without out the assistance of hearing protection. As we age, we sometimes get wiser, and since I wanted to continue to enjoy the intricacies of music, I learned to use hearing protection. As such, I routine use foam plugs, earmuffs, and also have an earmuff type headset that incorporates music via auxiliary cords or FM radio – which allows me to protect my hearing as well as enjoy music while mowing the lawn or splitting wood with a powered wood splitter for hours on end.
Unfortunately, my headset with the antenna for radio reception is bulky and does not pair well with a winter knit cap when snow blowing. Therefore, when I saw the Bluetooth enabled Saf-T-Ear “bud-type” earphones I was excited to give them a try.
The earphones have two sets of controls that are incorporated into a lanyard connected to the earplugs such that when wearing the headphones there is one set of controls on either side of the lanyard loop. One set of three buttons consists of volume up, volume down, and a multifunctional Bluetooth button which also controls on/off, phone answering functions as well as activation of SIRI/BIXBY/ALEXA platforms (which I did not test). The volume buttons can also be used to skip to next or previous tracks of music.
The other set of three buttons controls the Ambient noise and various levels of enhancement up to five times. For example, if the wearer needed to hear and participate in a normal conversation with the hearing protection in place, they could just turn the ambient noise control on and adjust the volume to a comfortable setting.
Operation
• The earphones paired quickly and easily.
• Turning on or off was accompanied by a verbal acknowledgement.
• Ambient noise controls worked as advertised and did facilitate normal conversation while wearing the headset.
• Volume up button worked fine while listing to music, however the first time I tried to decrease the volume, that particular button seemed to be confused and mixed up with the multifunctional Bluetooth pairing button and did not decrease the volume. Frustrated, I was going to contact technical support. However later after putting the earphones on again, I could not duplicate the problem. I tried several times, but the volume decrease operation went just fine. Not sure what the initial problem might have been, but all seems ok now.
• Just like with foam ear buds, it is recommended to squeeze and roll the foam prior to insertion into the ear canal. With these it is not easy, but also not impossible to do if you work really fast. The better the insertion technique, the better the protection.
• Using the protection with a snowblower required the volume of music to be turned up, but that is not unlike what I have to do with the older headset I have that fully covers the ears.
• Phone operation while wearing and listing to music worked as it should have.
• Overall, the noise reduction seems to be as effective as my normal foam plugs.
The most puzzling observation and somewhat disturbing was the packaging and promotional literature which clearly stated, “PROVIDES UP TO 40dB OF PROTECTION” on the front of the box, yet on the back side said, “NOISE REDUCTION RATING 25dB” (EPA label). From my uncertified testing, the rating is equivalent to my foam ear plugs and other music enhanced headphones – both of which have a 25dB rating. The manufacturer should correct the 40dB misinformation.
Bottom line – I am looking forward to using these under my warm winter knit cap with my snow blower during our next snowstorm.

I love these earbuds! I am always trying to find good hear protection and always end up using some over the ear noise cancelling headphones. This is because I like listening to music while I am working on my home projects and doing my yard work. These earbuds combine the best of both worlds. They have the soft foam that you roll with your fingers so you can insert them and expand them in your ears for a tight seal. Then you power them up so you can listen to whatever you like from your phone. It has nice big buttons so that you can control the volume and play/skip tracks with gloves.
It even has an ambient noise feature that is super cool. There is a big switch that you flip to turn on the ambient sound. When you first turn it on is sounds kind of fuzzy, but when you actually use it, it allows the sound to come in perfectly. You an also raise and lower the ambient allowance. It is super cool. I tested it thoroughly and it works really nice.
As far as the hearing protection, I have used it around the house with everything from power tools to blenders and it has worked wonders. It is still winter here in Chicago so I have not used it for mowing the lawn, but I already can see that it has help up to any loud noise I could throw at them. I have a nice sun hat I like to use outside but cannot use it with my over the ear headphones. These earbuds will come in clutch when the time comes.
The sound on these earbuds is also very nice. The sound is clear and crisp with the perfect amount of bass. If I had to find something to complain about, the charging port cover does not allow much room for the cable when you open it. It is kind of funny. But overall I can honestly say that I love these earbuds. I am going to use them every time I cut my grass, vacuum my car, use my air compressor, and use any of my power tools. I can't say enough good things about them.

I have been a firearms instructor and competitive shooter for several decades. Over the years I have been pretty basic with my choice of hearing protection, always doubling up with plugs and over the ears protection as well. Some guys have Bluetooth comms in their over ears, but I really have never tried anything like that. Well Saf-T-Ear just don’t work for a gun range.
Firearms emit a DB range over 140, and shotguns more than that. So, if you want to calculate a 40 DB reduction from there, there is a special calculation for that:
1. Find the Noise Reduction Rating (40).
2. Subtract 7 (No idea why this number).
3. Divide 33 by 2 = 16.5 is the level it will reduce from the DB’s you are hearing.
The reality is, that is not bad at all. Most items on the shelf are the same or less. But since I use double covers these just don’t feel comfortable under a pair of my outer ear covers.
So for me, these are my go to option for power tools and when I mow the lawn. First, because I usually don’t use anything in those situations and that is bad. But also because its not as loud as a full on pistol or rifle range.
So lets look at the pros and cons here:
Pros:
1. They feel like wearing a pair of ear plugs, and the string and controls are not heavy/bulky.
2. Bluetooth connects quick and the controls are easy to use.
3. The ability to hear ambient noise around you is really cool. It is not a new feature to earphones, but it is a nice feature and it works well.
Cons:
1. Not comfortable for wearing long periods of time.
2. For me, not a replacement for my gym or every day use earphones.
3. Music sound quality is lacking. Feels like it was an afterthought when making these when it boasts use at the gym listen to your tunes.
I went into this looking for an option for the range, but it didn’t work out for me. That is fine, because they are great for use when I mowing the lawn and working in the garage on projects. And for that is a very good quality product. Lucid Audio, makes some really high end hearing devices and have for a long time. So it is only natural that they would try and cross over into another category for their extensive product line. For me this is a good product that serves a specific purpose. I wont try and make it out to be more than it is, as they again won’t replace my go to day to day earphones. But now I have a great pair I feel I can use and abuse and they will take the hit and will still work. These feels strong and rugged.
I would recommend these to anyone working construction or anything around power tools or heavy machinery. That is what I will be using them for.

I've used these when snow blowing and it's a lot more comfortable than any over the ear protection I've used. Whether I am wearing a stocking cap, hat, or hood, easy fit and you almost forget they are there.
I also use them during the day as normal ear buds, with the added benefit of allowing more focus on my music and clearer calls.
I am looking forward to trying these out when mowing the lawn when the snow clears.

Listen to music and receive phone calls while having the benefit of 25 dB noise reduction of ambient noises. This feature works surprisingly well although the microphone isn't all that great. Too much static and voice is distorted. Awareness mode needs further developement. Overly sensitive at starting volume, they pick up and amplify too much of the surounding ambient noises. It would be better if the usere could decrease sensitivity and lower the cut off range to below 85 dB. Tested these while using circular saw and a router as well as in my work enviroment around vacuum pumps. Much more comfortable to use with Awareness Mode disabled. Buds are easy to insert and comfortable to wear. Fix the Awareness Mode and these would be worth having.

Bluetooth headset with large controls on connecting wire. Soft safety earplug like form on ear buds block loud noises. Ambient mode has separate switch and loudness level and basically transmits external sound at a controlled level. In the 1980s cassette based Walkman's had a button on the top that would allow you to hear outside nose without removing the head phones. I have not seen this feature since that product.

Overall solid headphone. Great for working outside around the house. I definitely “hear” the difference when wearing these headphone. “OK” fit for my ears. I tried all the different ear pieces couldn’t find one that fit my ear perfectly but the medium was ok. I guess im not sure to the foam materials. Connecting to my phone was pretty simple. These are an exceptional value.
