Imagine a stranger-in-a-strange-land revenge thriller about a wide-eyed Anglo bombshell (Scarlett Johansson) who gets kidnapped and abused in Taiwan by nasty, sweaty, shouting Korean gangsters and then escapes to seek justice - That is just the the first 10 minutes and the movie set you up to want to find out what happens next to our girl.
Without giving much away, "Lucy" is a fun, confident work. It's fast and tight and playful even when it's sadistic and violent, which is often.
The movie runs about 90 minutes but feels longer in a good way, because every second is packed tight...I would recommend this high octane fun ride.

With Scarlett Johanson and Morgan Freeman. Starts off slow but takes you for a 90 minute ride. Typical Luc Besson film and Scarlett Johanson does a credible job playing Lucy. I enjoyed it and I recommend it as a fun escape movie.

Lucy may not have the best plot, but it has Scarlett Johansson. She carries the movie with a little help from Morgan Freeman. Lucy is directed by the Luc Besson who also did La Femme Nikiita, The Professional, and The Fifth Element. Besson has a track record for female action heroes and doesn't disappoint, nor does Scarlett Johansson. Of the current female leads, no one quite sounds as good as Johansson either. Great performance by Scarlett Johansson.

This movie felt very stale. It feels like it was trying to replicate Limitless. Min-sik Choi and Morgan Freeman were easily the best parts of the film. We don't see much of them though. Scarlett Johansson was alright but again her performance felt stale but I believe it's because of the nature of the film. Overall it's a movie you can miss.

Luc Besson’s “Lucy” is a startling and thought-provoking exercise in What-If science fiction, masquerading as a summer action blockbuster. Despite some maddening flaws, it presents a powerful and compelling vision of what evolution, enlightenment, and eventual human ascension might look like.
The story revolves around Lucy, a ditzy 20-something blond party girl living the high life in Taipei, played by Scarlett Johansson. She becomes an accidental drug mule for some really scary bad guys who load up her abdomen with a new, super-duper synthetic party drug she must transport out of the country. Thanks to more really scary post-surgery bad guys, the drug starts leaking into Lucy’s gut, launching a chain of biochemical events that gradually turn on Lucy’s brain capacity to the 100% mark over the course of the film. Morgan Freeman plays the eminent brain researcher/Greek Chorus who helps Lucy, explains all the high-tech stuff to the rest of us, and dodges bullets when Lucy supernaturally conquers the bad guys who come to get their drug back. News Flash: The bad guys can’t touch her. At all.
The film has several strong points. Besson is a great proficient in high visual style as seen in his earlier films “The 5th Element” and “la Femme Nikita”. The look of the film is beautiful, and it’s all very well paced. Besson and his writers knew enough to not let either the action scenes or the more serious stuff fall into cliché. Animation wonderfully evokes, among other things, the life processes in our cells, passing through black holes, and also allows us to meet the original 3.2 million year old “Lucy”, the first near-modern primate ever discovered in the fossil record.
Viewers are naturally much more interested in the modern Lucy, and the film does not disappoint on that score. Scarlett Johansson does a superb job of being lofty, otherworldly, poignant, and a bombshell in a little black Chanel dress and 6-inch Christian Louboutin heels. The French filmmakers thought, somehow, that if you’re going to evolve and ascend, you should dress well enough to get through the metaphysical door. In the hands of a lesser actress, this would come off as either really campy or patronizing. Gifted actress that she is, Johansson brings a solemn nobility and innocent fascination to her character that is impossible to laugh at. She manages to maintain her dignity while fighting bad guys with really big guns, and driving insanely against one-way traffic in Paris, all the while obviously preoccupied with much larger, more interesting things than what those silly people are doing around her. Morgan Freeman is an excellent foil, bringing warmth and credibility to a part that amounts to reading a neurology textbook out loud. He carries it all off with complete artistic conviction.
This reviewer is most grateful that, despite the summer action movie packaging, the “message” is surprisingly high-toned. The small details and moments in the film show this to best advantage. As her plane lands in Paris, Lucy raises a glass of very good champagne to thin air and toasts,”To Knowledge!” It’s a small but telling moment. This is how Lucy will proceed with her evolution. The old adage remains true for many people that ultimate power corrupts absolutely. Just not here, and not with Lucy. She’s going to arrive at enlightenment in the best way possible. Many plot points in the movie support this upward path.
A few things tend to water down the message, however. First, the film is way too short at 1 hour 28 minutes. The most interesting points of the philosophical discussion get glossed over, or left hanging. For example, in the middle of the death-dealing demolition derby car chase in Paris, Lucy turns to her anxious policeman sidekick and reassures him with “We never really die”, while avoiding a lethal crash is if by mere chance. Now, it would have been quite interesting if Lucy could have discussed the after-life a bit more, since it seems like she actually knows something about it. Besson must have decided most unfortunately that the car chase had to come first. Interesting and even mind-blowing points are maddeningly rushed over in this way.
Also, much of the 1st act exposition is handled like a comic or graphic novel, and so the 1st act plot is overly compressed. Thus, much of the character development ends up a little shallow. It would have helped, for one thing, to see Lucy as she had been in a bit more detail before undergoing her drug-induced brain explosion. As it is, it’s hard to tell if she changes much, or not at all. 10 or 20 more screen minutes would have solved both these problems easily and not burdened the film at all.
But having said that, the film succeeds in posing a lot of mind-blowing questions in a visceral and arresting way. Is this what enlightenment really is? Is this where evolution is actually taking us? All those big questions and high-toned ethics, plus a bunch of guns and a little black dress, tied up in a summer action flick. Who knew?

When a boyfriend tricks Lucy (Scarlett Johansson) into delivering a briefcase to a supposed business contact, the once-carefree student is abducted by thugs who intend to turn her into a drug mule. She is surgically implanted with a package containing a powerful chemical, but it leaks into her system, giving her superhuman abilities, including telekinesis and telepathy. With her former captors in pursuit, Lucy seeks out a neurologist (Morgan Freeman), who she hopes will be able to help her.

While the premise itself can seem a bit ridiculous and won't be for everyone, if you can get past that, I think you might enjoy this film. Scarlett Johansson is always a joy to watch and the action sequences are pretty fun as well. The soundtrack was interesting as well. The video/audio quality are both good.

Not enough people are talking about this movie, yes it does go a little over the top. But what else were you expecting from a Luc Besson movie? He always keeps the adrenaline pumping and takes you on a fun ride that along the way makes you think a bit. Also a great movie to watch on a 4K TV

I typically feel cheated when I go to the theater and the movie is only 1.5 hours long. While it is a bit short on the story line, the crazy story line is a new idea and concept to creativity. The 4K HDR is really good in this movie, as there are a lot of various coloration that are definitely eye popping. The Dolby Atmos is good. While not much on the overheads that I recall, the base from my subwoofer was thumping in this movie.

If you're one for sci-fi, special effects and the visual appeal of 4K with HDR then you'll enjoy this movie. Even though I'd rather see Scarlett Johansson playing roles with more depth. This movie really wasn't meant to stimulate your intellect. It was meant for nothing other than to entertain your need to see a crime based gritty sci-fi movie with a considerable amount of action. Where most films have missed there mark when it comes to shooting in real time 4K this one hasn't and if that's appealing to you then it may make up for the the lack of substance when it comes to the acting performances there in. Even though it did have a rather good cast it fell short of how it could've been received. Perhaps a younger cast with some fresher faces would've given me reason to have a different appreciation for this one.

This is a guilty pleasure fun action movie to see in 4K. There are multiple instances during this action-packed flick where you benefit from the expanded HDR color palette and wider gamut of the 4K version. I personally enjoyed this movie and scenes such as when the drug is being assimilated into her body as well as when she is time jumping is pretty cool in 4K. The audio is also pretty great. I def recommend!

The premise is a little far fetched but that’s why we watch movies. If you like Sci-Fi and have an hour and forty five minutes to kill watch this you won’t be disappointed, plus you can see some of Black Widow’s mannerisms in Scarlett Johansson‘s role in this movie

Luc Besson has a knack for making flawed but incredibly fun films. Lucy is no exception. Packed with action from front to back you won't be bored for a minute. The 4K UHD presentation offers improved sound and picture versus the BD release.

I can't speak to the comparison with the regular blu-ray, as I didn't bother to do a side-by-side. I was impressed by the blu-ray when I saw it years ago. That being said, this 4K was really good, with a film that begs for detail and color extension. Again, can't say how much better it might be, but this 4K end-result was darned impressive, and fun, fun to watch.

Perhaps only a three-stars play, but honestly, good superhuman fun, what can I say. I appreciated the ideas explored, and Ms. Johannson is certainly not hard on the eyes. And who can argue with casting Mr. Freeman?
