Completely over the top horror film. This anniversary edition has amazing special features. Very in depth. I would recommend this film on the special features alone. Picture quality is awful but that was the intended look for the film. Sound quality is much better.

This film takes you into the mind of a serial killer. This thriller is great to watch for a horror movie night, especially if it is an 80's themed movie night!

A more realistic take on the 80's slasher!!

A more realistic take on the 80's slasher!! Joe Spinell really builds up a sick and twisted killer in this William Lustig directed horror movie. It has a dirty, gritty, real feel to it that really works while staying bloody and violent, the way a 80's slasher movie should be. In my opinion this is a classic 80's slasher that was forgotten just for the fact that Joe Spinell did not live long enough to star in sequel after sequel after it. Horror movie legacy's are kept a live with being given lots of sequels but just because this one didn't get that same treatment doesn't mean this isn't a classic.

This is how to make a low budget shocker. Don't expect campiness in this movie. A must see if you like the grindhouse-style of the 70s-early 80s. No doubt partially inspired by the Son of Sam happenings. Spinell is perfectly cast and won't soon be forgotten.

    Decent movie, terrible Bluray transfer!

"Maniac" is a love it or hate it affair. I am a big fan, but the Blu-ray edition is abysmal in the video department. The film does not translate well to the high definition technology and boy does it remind you every single minute of the film. Blotchy, poor definition, pale darks, grain galore and some artifacts that simply shouldn't be present in a decent high definition experience. Culled from a 16 mm print, its about to be expected. Why bother, though? Buying the Bluray is not going to improve over the standard DVD edition. Lots of excellent extras but the video quality of the feature has much to be desired.
