Don't misinterpret me; 1980's MANIAC is great for what it is/was--a seedy, sweaty look into the dark recesses of the depraved NYC that had to be seen to be believed. This remake is excellent and takes us to LA, land of dreams--or shall I say nightmares. I've never been a fan of Elijah Wood so I was very hesitant on buying until I found a copy in the $6 blu-ray bin. I got my wish--much of the film is from Wood's POV so the only aspect of him I had to endure was his voice. Don't be oft put by that he does a great job in the capable hands of producer Alexandre Aja and director Franck Khalfoun (the team that brought us P2). Did I mention that this is yet another IFCMIDNIGHT release? They are on a roll. Some of the best indie horror in recent years have been released by them.

I never thought much of Elijah Wood as an actor so I left this film off my "to see" list since its initial release. I just happened to see the film at a decent price and thought a blind buy would be ok. Luckily for me this is mostly a POV movie so Wood isn't onscreen much at all. I am a fan of the original 1980 film and its gritty NYC setting but this remake doesn't feel like much of a remake at all. The locale this time is LA and since there's a 30+ yr gap between films, the 2012 MANIAC feels fresh. Alexandre Aja & "Wild" Bill Lustig produce this polished, techno gem that would be an awesome double feature with DRIVE. Don't miss out!

This is one of the greatest horror remakes I've ever seen. I was never too crazy for the original, but this one caught me with it's crazy POV technique which is used throughout the whole film. It's a dark fun and disturbed time with cool 80's synth music and the writers of High Tension on scripting duties

This is a movie i wish had been done better. Being a remake, i thought they could have improved upon the original. Still a good movie and good acting.

This was such a creepy, bloody dark and disturbing movie and who knew that Elijah Wood could play such a frightening character and be so believable?

I prefer the original, but this remake is definitely worth a watch. The soundtrack to the remake (by "Rob") is fantastic! Great price!

Didn't think that Elijah Wood was up for the challenge but he proved me wrong. And listen for the music by Rob as it is excellent!

Bought this on a whim and I'm glad. Bloody, creepy, unnerving with good performances

Liked the dark turn Elijah Wood took here. Not a huge fan of the first person pov. Just wish they would stop remaking every movie that has already been made.

Guess it was a remake. Never saw original. It's ok but it's not a great movie IMO. Nothing special about it. Just wierd and gory for no reason.

Frodo came out of his shell and I guess that's what he wanted to do. Unexpected bloodiness and bizarre story line, but entertaining

Based on the 1980 slasher classic this remake is unique for being filmed from the killer's POV. A very suspenseful and violent remake that horror fans should enjoy.

I will say that I did enjoy this film. The scary part is there are actually people like this in the world.

Seriously gross movie but I love Elijah Woods, maniac as the title is the perfect title, plays a great serial killer which I wasn't expecting

Definitely one to have, just to say you have it! It is slow in the beginning, but still worth the purchase. Out of the norm, not your Frodo!
