My wife is in her 50's and grew up in China at the time this movie is set. The Chinese spoken in the movie is accurate, as is the indoctrination that students received. The lead male actor/dancer is not the greatest actor, but a very enjoyable movie.

I am not a ballet enthusiast but out of curiosity, I tried to see what this movie has to offer thru netflix. From the openning scene to the end, without question, I was glued to the movie. It was enlightening to know the differences in culture and living condition of America and China during Mao's dynasty. More interesting to know how a peasant boy arrived in Houston as a student and became a star. It was decades ago that I was so deeply touched by a movie and this is a very special one. Now, I am buying for a copy as my gift to my brother who is a ballet enthusiast. A rare beautifully made film.
