A rare cinematic gaming experience

Sony first party games are well known for having engaging, personal stories with high production value and a cinematic feel. It was a nice surprise to see something similar coming from a third party publisher with Guardians of the Galaxy.
This game pulls off something remarkably rare in game narratives - weaving a cohesive and organic story. In most games, there seems to be an ultimate objective, with obstacles cropping up here and their for the player to have to take a detour. The effect is longer game length disguised by a touch of contrived storytelling. This is not the case with GotG. The way the story is told, you don't get a feel for where the plot will go until a few hours in. And even then, natural story points take you in various directions for a very cohesive feel.
The characters feel familiar but also distinct in some ways from their MCU counterparts. They quickly grew on me, and hearing the banter while exploring never got old. My only minor gripe with banter is that taking a couple steps too far might trigger new lines from playing; to hear all the entertaining dialog I could, I would often stop in my tracks to let the characters finish their exchange. Every break in the story that lets you roam aboard your ship is an opportunity to speak with your allies. Some people may be inclined to just keep progressing the story, but I relished the interactions to learn more about them.
In terms of gameplay, exploration is serviceable. Levels are largely linear with a bit of wiggle room to pick up upgrade materials. As an avid explorer, it was surprising that about 80% of the way through, I'd already maxed out all upgrades. There is still one more incentive in the form of costumes, which are actually pretty impressive.
Combat is engaging. I played on the hardest combat difficulty and would make the same recommendation to most people. On a higher difficulty, mindless shooting won't cut it; you'll have to make good use of your allies' abilities which are on cooldown. There's a certain degree of strategy, though you'll rarely find yourself really challenged. The huddle mechanic was always a blast to use. It gives everyone a power boost, provides much shorter cooldowns, and most of all plays a banging 80s track while you mow down enemies.
As a game, GotG is a fun enough action-adventure. The personal and carefully woven story, combined with well written and genuinely hilarious characters takes it up a notch to make for one of the most memorable games in recent times.

This game hit the perfect tone between story, dialogue, character development and gameplay. So much fun. I truly felt like I was playing another volume of the Guardians of the Galaxy. My only negative is I wish I could’ve played as another Guardian other than Star Lord. Otherwise a great game! Btw - a shout out to all the voice actors on this one; they did a great job! And, a second shout out to licensing - all the music tracks were awesome!

Every few years you get a masterpiece made with so much love for the original content that it takes off and becomes a work of art with a life of its own. This game is such a jewel.
If you miss the days where we used to get solid single player experiences with wonderful stories and an engaging roster of characters. This will take you back to those feelings of fulfillment and excitement that a good game can bring.
I lost track of how many moments I was mind blown and completely involved in the story, so many surprises and twists. Your choices matter, and will affect the story and it’s outcome. Do not miss this game.
It’s a true classic and I think will become a cult game for future references of what a good video game experience can be like the Witcher, Batman Series by Rocksteady, dragon age origins or metal gear solid.
The music it’s incredible, and the original music made for the game is a solid heavy metal record. “Star Lord” band is an incredible addition to the mood and feeling, and I found myself hearing the songs and the album over and over. I am so glad you can hear it in Spotify and other places.
This is a game made with love. No micro transactions, no shoehorned multiplayer or ways of milking money from gamers.
I wish there were more games like this out there these days.
Hope this review was helpful.
And for anyone who has played it already, Keep rocking on the stars !

After the stumbling-bumbling Avengers video game, I really didn’t think we’d ever see anything else Marvel related coming from publisher Square Enix. Yet, surprisingly, here we are, and with Guardians of the Galaxy nonetheless. This game literally seemed to manifest itself before us, like a galactic cruiser emerging through a multi-dimensional space portal. At first, the game wreaked of what came before with the aforementioned Avengers game, but the magical space-dust is in the details. A single player experience that takes players on a story-driven adventure through the early days of the Guardians of the Galaxy, accompanied by action/rpg-inspired gameplay, and a vast variety of fanfare spread across a colorful and creative set of environments. Even more surprising, the game delivers on almost everything promised, and somehow offers up even more in some wonderfully unexpected ways - it’s a strange dynamic at first. The first hour or so, mainly the tutorial stuff, is paced to feel somewhat restricted, but I wouldn’t say it’s any worse than when other games do this - it is something worth mentioning though. Some might enjoy this time to learn the layout of the controls, and the feel of the overall combat dynamics, as most of the gameplay is built around giving your teammates demands via rpg-like trigger controls, while also controlling Star-Lord as a third-person action shooter. All of it comes together rather comfortably on the controller, and allows for some really fun, engaging combat. In action, the gameplay is actually pretty simple, and while the game offers a good amount of variety, I could see some players becoming fatigued, or lulled, by the end of the experience. I personally thought it held up for about 80% of my time it took to complete. However, where the gameplay eventually shows some cracks, the story here is 100% great, pure Guardians of the Galaxy. While this story is meant to be separate from the film, it clearly takes many inspirations - though I prefer this one much more. I felt like the developers took everything and turned the knob to 11, really letting the players flourish in the experience of participating in the story and game. At times, it felt as if the game was seamlessly switching from a video game to a CG movie, and even came together to feel like an interactive film, all while still having its other gameplay elements still in tact. Some moments in the story can carry on a little too long in-between the moments of raw gameplay, but never to the point of being annoying. Overall, this is truly a sleeper hit for me, coming out of nowhere, and then delivering far more than expected. The deep, engaging story blended with fun and exciting combat makes for a lot of dazzle-dazzle, especially with the rad soundtrack. The game does suffer from some moments where the storyline either goes on for a little too long, or the gameplay might lull out, but in the end, the balance of everything carries the fun through to the credits. I’d easily recommend this to anyone that simply enjoys a good, solid game - but if you’re a fan, then there’s even more here to be enjoyed.

The graphics and story line are great and well thought out. My teenage child loves the movie series, and this game allows us to continue to enjoy the Guardians of the Galaxy characters. This was a Christmas gift that was purchased on a pre-Black Friday sale for roughly half off! Can't beat the price on a new game release.

Liked it better than I thought I would. I'll just say this; I was planning on beating the game then reselling it. After completing it, I think I'm gonna keep it as part of my permanent collection.
Game plays a lot like Jedi the fallen order. Go to point a to b, kill, fight and converse along the way, move onto next cut scene and then onto next location. Some secrets hidden along the path to the end of the world/location you're working towards. It's a little diffreent in you cant entirely pick where you can go but its not needed anywaya since its a story driven game. Which is, quite satisfying, not overall the best but satisfactory nevertheless.
The convos and dialogue choices are rather skimpy but very straightforward. It doesnt convolute with fillers or uneccessary drivel. It's nice to have a timed portion of choosing otherwise, if not quick enough, you get to see what happens in the dialogue when slow to choose, lol. It offers some replayability but prob no more than one more time after beating the game.
The combat is nice, not overly complicated or even too strategized. You can eaaliy go in when you're partying/wasted and still come out on top. You can shoot, charge shoot, jump/fly, roll/dodge, thats it. You over time get 4 diff ammo types that work similarily in other games, weak vs ice, shock, etc. Ammo types are also used to complete puzzles which the pacing goes along nicely. Not too slow nor too hectic at any given time.
The voice acting and music track are superbly done. The banter and convos and arguments overheard are awesome. You rarely hear the same phrase twice unless you're just standing around, then your team will constantly repeat themselves, lol. I'm a fan of the 80s pop music. Tears for fears, Billy Idol, Flock of Seagulls, Blondie, and more are all there to listen and enjoy.
Overall, happy how it turned out and would def recommend at least renting it if not buying.

If it wasn't for how much I hated the Avenger's game I would have bought this game day one. Plays nothing like that it actually plays more similar to Final Fantasy 7 remake. Great story and character story arcs along with great dialog and banter. Really good purchase specially at the new lower price.

This game shocked me. After some underwhelming marketing, and a bit of Marvel fatigue, I had little interest in this game despite loving the James Gunn Guardians of the Galaxy films. I assumed it would be a run of the mill action game.
Boy, was I wrong. This game was crafted with love. The banter among the Guardians is sharply written and rivals the Gunn films. It feels like it's straight off the comic book page. Star Lord's story is emotional and the bond between your bizarre teammates is the heart of the story. It's about a found family and it can be quite touching as it is funny.
The gameplay is really fun and you can use your teammate's abilities in clever and unique ways. You constantly earn new abilities that make combat fun and engaging. This game received GOTY buzz, and I can understand why. Marvel's GOTG flew under the radar but for the wrong reasons. It deserves a bigger audience because it's something special.

After avengers I didn't really expect square to do anything good with the marvel license. The gameplay reveal didn't do it any favors for me either as I thought making Star Lord the only playable character was a dumb idea and I thought the combat also looked pretty boring. Boy was I wrong and in situations like these I like being wrong. It's a really fun game with surprisingly good writing. It's not MCU quippy annoying and it's not over the top, it's really well done with nice characterization and fun mystery.
It also has a dialogue tree with Telltale style butterfly effects that makes the game ten times more interesting. The combat isn't groundbreaking but it's good at what it does. It's like FF7R's combat with a bigger focus on set roles (Gamora does heavy damage, Drax can stagger easily, Rocket is good at crowd control, and Groot is good at immobilization) and less so of the deep player choice RPG's provide. Simple as shooting and commanding whatever teammate you need in that moment to help you. Its a lot more fun than it sounds tho. Exploration is also pretty fun. Discovering upgrades and costumes around beautiful alien planets and space ships never got old. It's a good looking game and sounds good. I did get some audio glitches where it just wasn't playing voices or sound effects but they were rare. I've also had 2 freezes where I had to restart the game. The glitches didn't really affect my enjoyment of the game but it's worth noting.
All in all it's a good game, great even. I strongly recommend whether it's full price or on sale (especially then) show those dumb guys at square that making good games is a good idea to get good money and to not make bad games

Sequel please, this was too good to be a one-off. I got to be Peter Quill for 20hrs while enjoying the Milanos ship design and the dynamic of the crew around me. The voice acting Is easily 10/10 hands down, the dialogue never repeats itself, it's fresh banter the whole way thru and it's hilarious. Graphics are top-notch, story was amazing, I would have much preferred a movie based on this than the awful sequel to GoTG from the MCU, this games Rocket Racoon is identical to the movies, but this games version of Drax is different from Bautista and that's ok because the games version is better, Drax easily has all the best lines in the game. Normally I'd review a game based on gameplay, this is the first time I'd say 1: Immersive 2:story 3:combat.
My bar was set really high with The Last of Us 2 but I'm super happy that something has come along that I can say I enjoyed as much as that game.
