Anyone looking for a history lesson in 16th century Western European politics and the monarchy would be wiser to pick up a respected history text than to watch Mary Queen of Scots. The film makes a point to blend 1500s historical narrative truths with modern and more accessible story supports meant to play up to 2019 sensibilities. More than happy to be the next in line for follow-the-leader, a game that so many of today's period costume dramas so willingly play, Scots makes an effort to connect the past with the present not through historical fact but by way of recognizable character beats and proclaiming its proclivities as a priority, strict adherence to historical fact be damned. That and vying for those precious Oscar nods for costume and makeup that, yes, Mary Queen of Scots received. It's a paint-by-numbers movie, concerned with marking off modern day human interest checklists rather than building a compelling historically grounded drama. For Universal this UHD is a stand out .I say that because this is a studio that doesn't often go the extra mile like Sony does with UHD releases.Mary Queen of Scots on UHD enjoys increase to both detail and color over the companion day-and-date Blu-ray. Improvements to sharpness are immediately obvious. The image finds a fairly significant gain in textural precision, adding an organic definition and clarity that leave the Blu-ray appearing a little soft by comparison. The increases extend throughout the film, from rough hewn castle walls to natural terrain details, from freckles and pox to various examples of period attire. More intimate skin details, more revealing costume elements, and firmer environmental textures all contribute to a much more agreeable add to definition and depth. There's vastly superior color definition and distinction on the UHD, which offers one of the more startling increases in image stability and color rendering over Blu-ray so far in 2019. The end result is a healthy, gorgeous, very cinematic image that is the unquestionable finest home video release of the film and one of the nicer looking UHDs on the market. The Dolby Atmos sound track is a perfect compliment to the picture quality. From seagulls flying over head to spacious reverbs within the castle walls ,waves hitting rocks heard in all channels. The movie is not great, but the UHD is terrific and its A/V qualities make the package worth a look.

The historical look of the fashion of the day is excellent and the way of Women in a man's world during this time of History, allows the characters to take on what might have been going through their minds as each actress (Mary Queen of Scots played by Ms. Ronan and Queen Elizabeth I played by Ms. Robbie) takes on their character's most prominent virtue and the direction of what was to become in the Worlds History. The confrontation and the way they apply each characters power is very tight which makes this movie so entertaining. If you love Historical movies, this one bring it all and much more for both of these main characters!

Superb acting and a stimulating plot, Mary Queen of Scots is heightened cinema entertainment with two stars turning in superb performances worthy of the historic figures they are portraying. What was even more rewarding the film portrays the emotional side of the relationship between the two queens by featuring their vulnerabilities and sensitivities to their surrounding dominating pressures from their male consorts and court advisers. A slice of regal history worth its examination.

Good history movie. The characters were well portrayed, although the focus was on Mary Stuart. However I do not recall so many African people in the English court or at least have not seen pictures of them in the History books.. Is this a politically correct movie ? Perhaps the Director of the movie did a better research than me. Anyways, the movie is good and so is the video.

For those who enjoy the rich history of the Stuart and Tudor periods of Scotland and England, this movie is for you. The acting is superb, and the scenery and music are true for the 16th century English and Scottish political landscape. The movie explores young Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, as she rules Scotland and her relationship to her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I of England, even exploring the controversial and questionable meeting of the two women.

Interesting look at the character of Mary Queen of Scots. Her relationships, including that with her husband, friends and Queen Elizabeth are a focus. Another focus is on the people influencing both Queens for political ends - the men in their courts. The biggest focus is on the relationship between the two queens. The sets and costumes are beautiful. The acting is very good.

I knew the story of Mary, Queen of Scots, but the not woman behind that story. This was a story of a Queen who would, and did, do anything for her country and a country that wasn’t ready for a Queen to lead them. The performances by Saoirse and Margot were incredible.

Definitely a great movie. It was well done, the make up and hair was great and I liked the alternative point of view and angle they decided to approach this story with.

I really wanted to love this movie as I am in love with Saoirse Ronan, but this film really falls short of great. Maybe even short of good. It's anticlimactic at every turn and though the visuals are great, it lacks a lot of anything that makes me feel immersed. Margot Robbie does a tremendous job in a role that's not really developed, which would have brought this film up tremendously. A good bargain bin pickup but that's all.
