Greatest Game Ever! Until Mass Effect 2 Comes out.

This is an amazing game that every 360 owner needs to play. It grows on you! You will start to care about the decisions you make as they have a dramatic impact on the story. And affect the story in Mass Effect 2.
The bio Tech powers are addicting to use much like Jedi powers but you have more of them. Very satisfying.
Once you get use to the game play you won't want to put it down.

Bought this game almost a week ago. Overall is was good, the pace was painstakingly slow however. Even World of Warcraft is fast paced compared to this. That's about the only drawback to this game: too much talking, not enough fighting. Being an experienced RPG player, I was able to put up with it, but especially now with how fast paced games are becoming, I can see how many people would not like this game. In a way you can determine your own pace since you often have the option to keep conversations short, but even then it is still pretty slow paced - even when sticking to the main story line. Many of the side missions are extremely repetitive. A quick overview of the side missions: go to this sector, explore the planets, land on one of the planets and explore that to find out where the mission is, rinse and repeat for the other side missions. So basically, if you like repetitive games, then look no further.
The main story missions are pretty short to be honest, you could probably complete the story missions in four or five hours if you stick to the story and do not complete too many side missions. I would have liked this better if the side missions did not involve so much exploring, but some people do like that. Exploring the different planets and sectors is pretty cool, but the planets that I did land on to explore in the Mako were just plain annoying in terms of the terrain. Many of the planets that I explored involved driving up insanely steep inclines just to reach one objective. I would have liked the exploring aspect of this game if they made it faster to explore and made the terrain less frustrating to navigate.

I only played this game because it is developed by the same folks who did Knights of the Old Republic. This game is even better not only graphically but the combat as well because it is not a turn based system but real time. The side missions feel a bit tacked on and a checkpoint system would have been nice. Overall a great story and a "hard to put down the controller" experience.

I was a Mass Effect fan ever since I read about it in a gaming magazine which had nothing to say but good things about it. I would occasionally go on the website and see if there was any recent news posted and there was always something good. I bought the game and played it the second I got home and much to my disappointment, there was a somewhat boring and unextraordinary feeling to the game, this being promised. Yes, the facial animations were very realistic but there were limited weapon categories, limited customization options, and terrible A.I for a next gen game. In combat, enemies' voice work is repetitive and the architectural variety is limited to about six different designs. Exploratory planets are lifeless and desolate and they too are much similar to one another, causing me to believe that production of the game was rushed. But beneath these negative areas, there lies a storytelling gem that includes exceptional voice work and at most times, beautiful landscapes and graphics. I'm sure Bioware did put most of the time into voice work and the facial movements of the characters. But Bioware, I have come to believe, is of my top four favorite gaming developers, this because they produced such classics as KOTOR 1 and 2 and Jade Empire and for this I should be grateful that exceptional quality is still in the name of Bioware.

If you liked KOTOR, you need to play Mass Effect

I have been playing RPGs for at least 20 years now, and this is definitely one of the better ones. The world is really fleshed out, and they provide background stories for virtually everything, if you want to research the world. If you enjoyed KOTOR (Knights of the Old Republic), you should give this one a chance.
I bought the DLC (downloadable content) online before starting. The DLC fits into the regular gameplay, so I'd advise you purchase that before starting (about $5).
So far I'm 24+ hours into it and it doesn't seem to be tapping off any time soon. I completely hooked. At first I wasn't sure if this game was for me, but it won me over absolutely.
The drawbacks of the game are some of the long loading times and some of the side missions are trivial and tedious. But they are both negligible.
The game has a lot of the same technical limitations that are found on next-gen systems. It would best suit you to have an HDTV to play this, because the text is really hard to read on an SDTV and there is A LOT of text.

in a few words- great, but also greatly overrated

im gonna start this review by saying that this is a great game. combat is kinda weak but still fun, and for the most part there is plenty of action. but I was super- hyped to get this game, and i cant believe how overrated this game was. i mean, from half the reviews they have it sound like a masterpiece, when there are MANY weak points. for one, wen i stuck to the main storyline, it took me about 9hrs to beat. now that is short. this game takes about 3 hrs just to get used to the controls, and then all of a sudden ur done and u feel like the experience is incomplete. the MAKO controls are so annoying, but i didnt find them hard at all like some of the other ppl said. And for some reason that i will not spoil for u, you cannot go back at the end and complete side missions which makes me very angry!
overall, i would suggest u rent an then decide to buy because this game is not for everyone and dosent really provide a diffrent experience that you couldnt get with cod4 or halo except for the 3rd person shooter part

just to start off, this game is one of 2 games that amazed me. the storylines plot was amazing and if you play the story line again it just gets better and you understand so much more. you can delve into the story as much as you like by completing the mini quests but the main story line was amazing.
this game actually gives you decssions that massivley effect the rest of your game. at one part of the game you are faced between saving an entire regament of souldiers with one of your best friends in it or going back to help arm a nuke because saren was using the facility for evil intentions. so you have the choice to either help your best friend or let him die and arm the nuke to save millions of civilians. its that old saying kill one, save a thousand.
this game had the best storyline in a video game that ive ever played. hands down i would recomend this to everyone. even if you dont like 3rd person shooters... the storyline will grab you a pull you in.

I played this game three years ago (?) and loved it so much I did four complete playthroughs just to see what there was to do and to setup my saves for Mass Effect 2. After playing Mass Effect 2 I found myself wanting to go back yet again, because the ability to import your ME1 save into ME2 is just that amazing of a feature. The science-fiction story, combined with the feeling that your actions have a part in shaping the universe around you is quite good. ME1 may not be the best game now in 2010, but it was definitely in my top two for the year it did come out. Stop reading. GET IT.

This is a great game, very well rounded. The combat allows you to pause and choose a special action each time you have one available, the storyline is great, and you can spend days on this game if you decide to do a lot of sidequests. Definitely recommended.

A Good RPG/FPS Hybrid

Mass Effect 2 is an overall good game. There is a ton of content backed into this one game its value alone makes t better than most. The graphics are a significant step up from the previous one as is the conversation mechanic which now allows for interuption by the player. The combat mechanics are now more similar to an FPS as you know have to manage your ammunition. The RPG element has been stripped down some as there are fewer weapon, armor, and skill point choices but they did add a resource management feature. The plot is a little weak and there are no real surprises and you spend most of the game recruiting teammates. That said, I still think this is a good game which has provided countless hours of entertainment for me already, and with the Mass Effect 1 save import feature I see myself playing even more in the weeks to come.

This is the kind of game you are going to have to play a little before it sucks you in. Give it some time because once you do it will make you want to start over as soon as you beat it, which may take a very long time. The game can be very different each time you play it. There are endless options to choose from that may determine if your party members make it thru the game or not.
The loading times are a problem but no more than they were for games like Bioshock.
The inventory system could be improved but there are many ways to customize your weapons and that almost makes up for it. It is a really good game that I think anyone could enjoy.
On a side note traditional RPG fans may want to go the route of a Biotic while casual gamers that like shooter games more, may want to select the soldier option because it will allow the game play to be faster paced.

This is a must-have game if you enjoy RPGs or value story in games over fancy graphics. The only complaint would have to do with some control issues and somewhat convoluted inventory system, but otherwise it's a great game.

A Must for 360 Owners

Mass Effect is a game that really shows the potential of the Xbox 360 and where it's going. The graphic detail, everything from facial expressions to cinematic cutscenes to gunfights look intensely realistic, and even with the hype this game received I really wasn't expecting it to be so shockingly detailed.
The only thing that I can really complain about for Mass Effect is that some of the Achievements (if you're into gathering them) requires several playthroughs of the game - at least 3, if you want them all. I say at least because chances are you might miss one somewhere along the line, and the only way for some of them is to complete the 'majority' of the game, which, in other words, is a complete playthrough.
Regardless of that, the game is fantastic, and an absolute required-play for any 360 owners.

The most in-depth story in a videogame, ever
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
This game has the most in-depth story line of any videogame to date. The outcomes of many events rely on the players decisions which can be thrown at them in a moments notice. After a few days of playing you'll be addicted to finishing and you'll feel as if you are Commander Shepard, voyaging through space and defeating corrupt aliens. The battling system is great for a third-person shooter (although I only played as 1 class out of the available 5.) The only reason I gave this game a 4 is that it has horrible replay value. Personally, the first run through I was so addicted I told myself I was going to get all the achievements, but when I had finished and started a new game I was so turned off by the repetitiveness of the story (while many events are based on your decisions the main plotline is linear in the fashion with which you complete the game.) Another hang-up I have is that this game would be amazing with multiplayer, which is saying a lot for a third-person shooter.

The only issue I had with this game was that even if you selected different backgrounds and character classes, the story was generally the same. Some different side quests pop up, but the main quest and general game play is the same, taking alot of the fun out of replaying the game. This is the case for most if not all RPG games, however, so this can be overlooked. The major battles throughout the game arn't all that dificult. One thing about the game I really liked was that it was easy and fun to get involved with the other characters in the game. Getting to know them and spending the time and money to upgrade their equipment made the game much more entertaining.

MAss effect has a great story. what makes the game fun, is in how you create the story. Can choose how your charecter reacts in the story. Suit and gun upgrades is alright, not the best.

The best of two worlds RPG 3rd person shooter

I like games in which you can up-grade characters and weapons. I also like third person shooters of wich there are but a few. This game delivers quality on all levels. The story-line is deep and full of detail and interesting to say the least. The character developement system will leave you second guessing yourself as to whats the right thing todo for your character. Your skill with weapons and bio-tech actually affect you in reall time. Example: the lower your skill is with a weapon the larger your aiming reddical will be, thus making it harder for you to aim in real time. Awsome game and a great merger between shooter and RPG.

I've alwayz been a fan of RPG as long as they are not turn based when it comes to combat which luckily for me isn't the case with Mass Effect. The extensiveness of the cidetal alone sort of reminds me of the Balamb Garden in Final Fantasy 8, and is at least 1 of many reasons to purchase this game. Your character and his/her crew are fully customizable being able to reach high ranks and levels depending on the decisions you make during social or action based situations. And I really love the ability to have control over their positioning, put your team in a good place and the handle gun fights better. There is much to enjoy from this game especially in regards to exploration and actions. However there can be some targeting issues more so for the Mako. At times I felt as if my shots were more successful from afar, due to situations were there could be an enemy right next to me and in the mako and the targeting system at that point couldn't hit the floor if I fell on it. The booster rockets do come in handy on occasions (and there will be occasions) when your stuck on things (that's gotta be a glitch). However after playing a few times and getting use to the mako's controls although still somewhat aggrevating it can be a formidable weapon since you wouldn't last 5 seconds fighting planetary enemies outside of it because for some reason they seem to be even harder outside of buildings on other worlds. I also noticed whenever I went to my squad screen it would take a few seconds for textures to process fully. Aside from the small glitches and Mako controls(give it time, you'll get them) this game is a must have and probably the greatest RPG I ever played...Notice I said RPG so if your looking for a great 1st person shooter your not even in the right catagory so why compare? Great game, must buy!!!!
