A technical feat that doesn't always match up in the acting/script department. Well deserving of the best picture nomination, but not anyone's best effort in the cast/crew. Maybe the book is better?

This movie is a Russell Crowe classic

Only a few movies that become classics are iconic due to the lead actors. Russell Crowe and several others become the character. This movie isn't non-stop explosions and war scenes - those parts contrast the authentic sound of creaking boards in the crew's quarters and other subtle quiet moments giving a second layer of authenticity. Cannon booms through my BIG Mordaunt-Short towers and 12" NHT subwoofer impressed me as being the real thing. The DTS sound is very dynamic. A high end Onkyo or Yamaha Aventage A/V receiver gets a good workout.

This sea epic is certainly worthy of blu-ray presentation. An excellent story, splendid acting, wonderfully shot ship battles and boarding actions, and a great sense of humor in places where appropriate. I really wish more of these films were made. This is one of my absolute favorite films.
The blu-ray also comes with a few nice extra features: Deleted scenes, Historical and Geographical Trivia Track, and a Pop-Up Map.
For just a few bucks, you could not go wrong with this film/blu-ray.

Great action film that takes place during the Napoleonic Wars. Captain Jack Aubrey leads the crew of the HMS Surprise. Their mission is to destroy or capture the Archeon, a French ship that is great in size and firepower. Captain Aubrey has to think of a plan in capturing the Archeon and he will not give up until his mission is complete, even if it means losing crew members.
I loved the battle sequences. Seeing ships and uniforms from an era long ago is great.
I would have loved hearing a director's commentary.

its nice to see a movie that isn't about after the apocalypse--one where people aren't cussing, things aren't being blown up or people shot at, and cars aren't racing down city streets; and it has no racey, steamy scenes... its a STORY,something one only sees these days with cute computer generated animals or alien characters--but it's perhaps not as good as classic maritime movies. Still, a nice change--a rare genre for a modern movie.

The difficulty in presenting the early phases of world domination by two of the main players of the 19th century is done well. Both the British and by contrast the French are aptly presented in this seafaring drama. Even the political and economic issues of the day are given a nod. Captain Jack's "this ship is England" speech to rally the crew before engagement with a larger better equipped adversary ranks as one of the best of its type.

I love great home theater films that make you feel immersed in a time and place, and Master & Commander does this so well. The sound design alone transports you, but everything from the sets to the locations to the solid acting from Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany really put you there. The blu ray delivers such a perfect sound mix and crisp picture. This belongs in your video library next to U571.

Master and Commander never really caught on with audiences - maybe it was the unwieldy title, or the fact that it sold itself as an action film - but even after a decade and change, it still holds up. The film is ripe for rediscovery, so don't let the fact that it's hanging out in the "bargain" bin dissuade you from picking it up.

This is a vivid, exciting tale of naval warfare, but it's also a satisfying and moving portrayal of a unique community: the company of a warship. The film is full of stirring action scenes, but it is equally rich in the details of the men's everyday life: their food, shipboard entertainment, naval tradition, etc.
