This is the story of how one of the worlds greatest department stores was created. Jeremy Piven's portrayal of Harry Gordon Selfridge is perfect for the roll. Selfridges opened in London (49 years after "Macy's was founded in New York) and remains open in business to this day. The story takes the viewer through the war, and into peace time. The clothing and settings are almost perfect. If you are a fan of the "Downton Abbey" series you will get drawn into this series too. It takes me back to a time when knowing your customer was true stock in trade. When you were greeted by your name in a department store. A time when, if a bolt of material came into the store they would call you at home and tell you so that you could come and see if you wanted a pair of pants or a suit or nothing made from that bolt of material. A time when, the customer was "KING" or at least treated like a prince. And you always received service, with a smile. Well worth the price to purchase it and the 8 hours to watch all of it.

This is by far one of the best Masterpiece Classic shows ever made. Incredible acting and very entertaining. I know that not all the story lines are exactly as Mr. Selfridge's life but it did follow many of his life's situations. He was before his time and created a masterpiece of a department store which still stands today. Highly recommend this fascinating story.

I purchased this after watching the series on PBS. This series is based on Harry Selfridge, an actual person. Although it has taken liberties with some of the details, the show does seem to rely on his character and true events. It is amusing, keeps my interest, and the acting and characters are very good.

I took a chance on "Mr. Selfridge" when I spotted the season one box set in a $10 bin at Best Buy. The story is very addictive and the acting quite strong throughout, but it's the scenic and costume designs that really grab your attention. I'll definitely add the subsequent seasons to my wish list.

I like the series so much I bought all the seasons on DVD. It is based on a real life character and stays close to the real history but, of course, takes liberties with the characters, etc., like most film works do. Good actors too.

What an amazing series! The shipping was super fast and I watched the entire set in 2 days. Best Buy is reasonably priced. I can't wait to get the remaining DVDs to complete my collection. I will definitely purchase from Best Buy.

I have visited London numerous times and have shopped at Selfridges. I never knew that this gentleman was an American. This serial is well made. It kept us engrossed. Must watch. Higly recommended.

THIS MOVIE WILL PROVIDE YOU A VIEW OF RETAIL MERCHANDISING IN IT'S EARLY STAGES,ON ANOTHER LEVEL. WE RARELY SEE.THIS TYPE OF TRANSFORMATION OF A MAN THAT KNEW HOW TO DISPLAY MERCHANDISE.

I can not say enough good things about this show! Jeremy Piven is excellent - probably my favorite role of his - and the stories are great. I only wish I had found this show sooner.

I WAS SKEPTICAL WHEN I SAW JEREMY PIVAN WAS IN THE LEAD ROLE BUT HE GAVE QUITE A GOOD PERFOMANCE. I REALLY LIKED THE WAY THEY SHOWED HOW HE WAS A LEADER IN THE RETAIL BUSINESS. HE WAS TRULY AHEAD OF HIS TIMES AND CREATED AN INSTITUTION THAT IS STILL VIABLE IN ENGLAND.

And here's the story of a flamboyant American who created the SPACE and the STYLE for Brits to shop til they dropped.

I saw this on PBS and enjoyed it so much that I had to buy it for my dvd collection.

Like most Masterpiece offerings this series is excellent entertainment!

I love PBS and I love this show. I can't wait to see the rest of the series.

I have tried several attempts to get into this miniseries and I keep falling asleep. I bough it because I thought it was binge worthy. Now, I know it is great to use as a sleep medication.

I watched the first two episodes, and then jumped to the last one. The story just did not hold my interest.
