    Uncomfortable, yet essential viewing

This film is about the meltdown, unmaking and rebuilding of the rock band Metallica. It is uncomfortable to watch, but that's because of how honestly the band's immaturity and desperation are portrayed at times in this documentary. It's also essential viewing- for anyone interested in the band, the filmmakers Berlinger & Sinofsky or interpersonal relationships. Up-and-coming bands should watch this as a cautionary tale of how not to do things for 30 years. It's a miracle Metallica's lasted this long in what was a very dysfunctional system. This film is a testament to the strength of the individuals in the band, family and their support staff. This recent reissue on the band's own imprint adds a single additional featurette, "Metallica: This Monster Lives". Filmed in 2013, this extra was not on the original release and is more a fluff piece than a retrospective "current state of affairs" that one is lead to believe from its title. Even so, the existing extras are more than enough to suggest this release without hesitation.

This is one of the greatest documentaries ever made capturing the band's struggles as they write and record St. Anger. The blu-ray quality is a little disappointing compared to the DVD version. I couldn't really tell the difference. The film is still shown in it's original 4:3 aspect ratio,

Metallica suffered through a crisis in the late 90s and had to return to basics to reconquer its original legion of fans. This DVD is proof of it, follow member of Metallica in their recent projects as well as enjoying their timeless music. Thumbs up!!

Found this bluray at a great price. The inner turmoil and struggles of the band as they deal egos, members leaving, addiction, etc. couldn't have been made up. The real deal issues are so compelling. One of the best documentaries I've ever seen.

Being a fan of the band, it was an easy watch, but for someone who isn't into Metallica as much, they won't get as much from it.
