The American International kit is superior

I bought this kit for my 1999 Ranger XLT Supercab 4x4. It does not fit very snug into the dash bezel once it is modified for use in a Ranger or Explorer of that generation (1998-2003). There are three reasons why I like the American International kit better. 1) A.i. engineered multiple snapping tabs along each vertical side that secure the kit into the dash bezel. Metra has two large ones on the top that do not protrude far enough for them to catch the back side of the ridge of the dash bezel. I ended up cracking my bezel because I thought these snapping tabs on the Metra kit weren't clearing the back of the ridge when really they just didn't stick out far enough. 2) The universal mounting tabs that come moulded on every A.i. kit have two easily cuttable yet strong horizontal pieces that connect each tab to the rest of the mounting kit. Since they are horizontal, they do not interfere with installation. Metra, on the other hand, moulds one very thick tab into the rest of the kit, and after cutting them off, you have to file these nubs down which takes time and scratches the top of the kit if you aren't careful. Who really wants a scratched up mounting kit..? 3) The little cubby space on the A.i. kit is larger than the Metra, and it doesn't have as much of a taper to it as it goes farther back into the cubby. I like to actually use that compartment for stuff, like my giant LG G4. This kit might work well in other applications, like a Crown Victoria or a Navigator/Expedition or F-150. For the Ranger or Explorer, I do not recommend buying it. The photo I have included is of my Ranger now, with a new dash bezel and the American International mounting kit.

I haven't had a chance to complete my install, but the kit seems fairly straightforward once I got it open and looked at it. I will update the review once the install is complete (waiting for the weather to warm up so I can feel my fingers)

Its a Good installation kit, especially for the money your paying. I struggled a bit putting it into the space i already had from the past stereo. But it looks Good and installation time was around 20 min once the radio was placed.

Great kit, covers a wide spectrum of ford vehicles and even works if you have a Saab with the odd factory double din radio. Slightly flimsy, but better then some of the other kits on the market

This was for a 2000 Ford Explorer. Not only did I have to saw off some plastic pieces, it technically fits in the car, but if you bump the radio at all it will slide out. The "flared" part that's supposed to hold it in is not that deep, so really does not grab. It does work, but could be a bit easier - why would the customer take a saw to the product, what if it doesn't fit? Then it's ruined.

This kit was easily installed in the dash of my 2003 Ford F150 4X4. Dry-fit the product in my dash, trim the top "ears" off of the top of the kit and it was a perfect fit.....the only thing I can say negative is the kit could have included better instructions in the package.
