XBOX Live Gold is a must have and it makes online play much more enjoyable. The free games are decent when looked at over the course of the entire year, and this is a good value for what you get. Especially if you convert it to a gamepass ultimate.

I've been away from console gaming for the past several years, so I was completely surprised to see what the XBOX LIVE experience had become in my absence. While the interface can be overwhelming at first, Microsoft has truly done a fantastic job with making a cohesive entertainment hub! And the perks (such as free games, special sales, etc) really sweeten the pot for paying the monthly and/or yearly fees. This service is just as good as Amazon Prime (for a comparison)
