Several months ago I started an xbox live account and at first I noticed that the pool of people I could play with was somewhat limited. At times it would take so long to find a match. I found out it was becuase I had a strict NAT. Which basically just means your connection to other people on xbox live is very limited. I did really enjoy xbox live when it worked. but its so frustrating when it doesnt. Recently I purchased Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and playing this game online with a strict NAT is nearly impossible. I have tried countless times to fix it by changing my NAT settings, all ending with the same result. I tried contacting xbox customer support and even they couldnt help me. They just gave me a few hopeless ideas that I had already tried and said "Please be advised that we cannot guarantee that that you will able to change your NAT results". So please, if you are thinking about starting an xbox live account make sure you dont have a strict NAT. You will probably regret it.
