Customers are saying

Customers enjoy the engaging gameplay, compelling story, and innovative Nemesis System in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. Many also praise the game's beautiful open world and responsive controls. However, some players find the difficulty challenging, and a few note limited replayability after completing the main story. The game's strengths clearly outweigh its weaknesses for most players.

While this was clearly the best Lord of the Rings game ever with fantastic visuals and easy controls, the difficulty in the game is very frustrating. If you fail in a task, be prepared for the game to punish you and make it even harder.

I bought this game at a sale price. I had a very specific amount as to what I would pay for it because it was receiving mixed reviews. When the sale price hit my number, I bought it. It was a good number, because it was a great game for what I paid for it. If you like open world RPGs, buy it.

I'm only 3 days into the game, but making progress quickly. If I have any complaint about the gameplay, it would be that there are too many enemies. One you get into a fight, they just keep coming. I'm at a level now that I can easily handle about 40, but then I get overwhelmed. Great LOTR story line, which is completely new from the books, but uses many of the same characters, golem, sauron, and several others. The nemeis sysem is completly different from anything I have seen. Works well. You could compare many of the main character, Talion, moves to those of Assassins Creed, but there are planty of new moves too. Overall a fun game.

The new nemesis system is an excellent design and adds to an unique play through experience for each player. They have continually added free DLC with new missions to further the replay value. The game is tough at first but once you start leveling up skills you become almost unstoppable. This is based off the Batman fighting system so if you are familiar with that you know what you are getting into. Even if you are not a LoTR fan this game is fun as cutting off orc heads in slow motion is a lot of fun.

    Batman meets Mordor

If you are a fan of any of the recent Batman games, you will enjoy Mordor. The combat is exactly the same style and you earn XP to upgrade your character throughout the game. The only real frustrating part of the game is that the world seems a bit too small. There are Generals, Captains, and War Chiefs throughout the game that you have to kill in order to advance. Usually there about about 15 to 20 in the world at all times. They are range from being a bit tougher to a lot tougher in battle. While alone, this is fine, but the world seems small because you could happen to stumble into 3 or 4 of them in the same town. This leads to all of them fighting you, plus the group that is with them. At some points you might have to fight 40 or 50 guys, when is almost impossible. This is my only real gripe with the game. Don't Pay $60. Wait until it is on sale for about $40. Having the Gamer Club Unlocked also helps a ton.

Solid combat and free running systems have been lifted from other games. The nemesis system lifts this above the common Assassins Creed esque games of the day. Tolkien purists may not like some liberties taken with the lore, but I didn't find it that hard to overlook.

This game is challenging, fun, and overall a great addition to anyone's PS4 library. If you have a PS4 and haven't taken a jab at this game you're not experiencing everything that system can dish out. The nemesis system is great where you create enemies that come back and haunt you in the game. it makes it that much more engaging by trying to kill all those Uruk captains. Get this game! Finally the only reason I didn't give this game a full 5 stars is that it's another game that wasn't necessarily complete when it came to the story. By that I mean the DLC content that is offered even after buying the game. Its a way that the developers of video games cash in on their games. They charge you the full price of %59.99 and then another charge of $15-$50 just to have more of the story. It's not fair, and that's not how games used to be. Other than that good game!

Maybe not Lord of the rings, but it is set in the Middle Earth The combat is very similar to Assassins Creed and the Batman games. My only complaint is that everything is trying to kill you.

So rarely do I find that a heavily touted new never before seen system or feature is truly worthwhile but the nemesis system really delivers. The base game outside the nemesis system has a lot of the flaws of open-world AAA games: Collectibles that feel pointless, awful side quests etc. The combat could probably be seen as either a positive or a negative depending how much you can stand repetitive combat. I actually really like it and there is a RPG-lite upgrade system wherein which you unlock better combat abilities and eventually become incredibly powerful [in the beginning of the game I found anything more than say 6 orcs at once dangerous, by the end swarms of 50 - 75 orcs weren't a problem] and some elements of the combat are fairly cool like there's special abilities you can use once you bulid up a combo meter. The story is all right but nothing too special. The characters are kind of bland but not too distracting. The art direction is quite nice once you get to the second area as the first is very dark. The nemesis system is like a sub-game within the main game almost. It's used extensively in the missions but I find it more fun to go off book with it then anything. In essence the system tracks all Orcs in your game [whether they die, whether they kill you etc.] and there are power rankings to every Orc. If a normal orc kills you he will likely be promoted to a captain, if a captain kills another captain he may be promoted to a warchief and so on. But there's other elements to it as well as you can use the orcs against themselves and it gets quite good at this point. Overall I have enjoyed the game immensely however I have a strong stomach for repetition and others may not find it as enjoyable because of that

While Shadow of Mordor is a great game if it were just the combat and story missions, it's really the innovative Nemesis system that makes this game interesting and fun to play. It's neat how just some cannon fodder Orc could kill you and be elevated in the ranks to becoming a main event player in the game. Sometimes they'll be a thorn in your side, continue to stalk you, try to kill you any chance they get, etc. It's a world that's always evolving.

Picked this up because I was looking for a new game. I like the third person action games, but the rpg part is what turned me off. It's an ok game, but not the greatest. The graphics are really good, and the story is good also.

Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor is quite an exhilarating ride from start to finish. While it is not based directly from any Middle-Earth storyline, SoM contains characters (mainly Orcs) and takes place at a key location from the Tolkien created world. The battle system is pure nirvana to learn and execute and felt closely related to the excellent mechanics used in the Batman Arkham game series. Gamers will play as Talion, a Ranger that was killed along with his family and then mysteriously brought back to life; seemingly connected to a mysterious entity that shares your being and keeps you from permanently dying. As you play through the game, dispatching Orcs of various difficulties (from lowly grunts to War Chiefs) you will be introduced to a wonderfully irritating "hook" called the Nemesis System. Somewhere along the way, one of the Orcs that you kill will also come back to life, rise through the ranks and will "dog" you throughout the game. Showing up at the most inopportune times, your Nemesis appear; he will mock you with some cleaver one liners and more often then not "kill you" and become more powerful as a result. It is actually quite cleaver how it all plays out. Graphically, the game is pleasant enough to look at running at native 1080p and a pretty solid 30fps with decent AA. The texture detail at times can be very detailed. Anyway, I can highly recommend this game to any action/fantasy gamer, especially those that enjoy the whole Middle-Earth lore and setting. Pick it up for the action and adventure - and then get hooked in by the awesome battle mechanics and Nemesis System.
