I had high expectations for this movie, and they were absolutely MET and EXCEEDED. In my opinion, "Midway" is the best and most historically-accurate WWII movie of recent memory, and it's one of the few that actually highlights the air war in the Pacific. The writers seemed to recognize that simply recreating this momentous series of events was an amazing story in-and-of itself, without wasting time on unnecessary drama and distractions. You can tell that the writers, producers and actors all paid close attention to maintaining historical accuracy throughout the film. From Pearl Harbor to Midway, they captured many of the key interesting and critical moments along the way. They also showed both the American and Japanese perspectives in an insightful and respectful manner, which only adds to the complexity of the story. Also, the action scenes will have anyone (history lover or not!) on the edge of their seats the whole time! I loved every moment showing the SBD Dauntlesses and the processes of dive bombing, and I enjoyed their portrayal of the Doolittle raid. Finally, the casting was great. Each actor portrayed his or her real-life counterpart in a masterful and poignant way. In short, I can't recommend this movie enough. It's incredibly important to remember the courage, daring and skill of the men and women who fought in WWII, today and every day. This movie brings their sacrifices and skills to life.

Great movie...great soundtrack with Dolby Atmos...

powerful story of one of the most important battles

But...Where were the Wildcats!?!? Seriously though, with all this movie got right...the filmmakers forgot about the F4F Wildcat fighters of VF-6 aboard the USS Enterprise!! I understand that the movie was told from the viewpoint of the men of VB-6, VS-6 and some of VT-6. However, NOT one scene aboard the Enterprise showed Wildcats parked on deck, taking off during the battle (especially since the fighters were the first to launch), or their part in the battle. I'm not berating the movie as a whole, that's why I gave it 5 stars, because it was soooooo good historically. But another glaring omission was the devastation of Torpedo 8 from the USS Hornet. And then the final huge omission was how the battle truly ended...with the sinking of the USS Yorktown!!! These were two important events from the Battle of Midway that were left out! Soooooo, besides the total omission of the F4F Wildcat fighters, Torpedo 8 from the USS Hornet and the sinking of the USS Hornet..I still give the movie 5 stars because it was historically accurate. It also told the story from the viewpoint of the REAL people involved in the battle. This is definitely the definitive movie on the Battle of Midway. The CG effects accurately portray the ships and planes of the era. Just eye popping! And if you're a World War II buff or just a lover of good movies, this is one to add to the collection.

Not much to say about video/audio quality; it's what you'd expect from any BluRay. When I watch a film (TV show, etc.) based on historical events I'm always interested in how accurate it is compared to the real event depicted. Based on information supplied in the Bonus Features, this film appears very accurate. I'm no historian, though I've always had a passing interest in WWII. As far as Bonus Features are concerned, many here are historically based (as opposed to technical -- how was the movie made; or activity based -- more often seen in kids films and such). At least one feature is a discussion by the film makers about how they really wanted to get high accuracy in the film, and there are also features interviewing people who participated in and survived the events documented (and are depicted in the film). Obviously any film will have a certain amount of dramatization, but this film seems to try to portray all events as happened and as much dialog as is historically recorded. This isn't to say someone with far more expertise in this area than I won't find issues, but my impression is there are far fewer issues than with many other so-called historical films.

Good storylines by including non-fictional aspects of the battle.

Midway is a bit of a generic action/war film. It pains me to say that because the event of Midway is arguably one of the most pivotal engagements in military history. People remember D-Day for as that moment that the allies started to push back Hitler's grip on Europe by breaching his Atlantic Wall. While this has been immortalized in series and films like Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan, Midway hasn't quite had the same attention paid to it. Sadly this movie misses the mark. It gets bogged down in trying to tackle too much. This isn't so much a spoiler as it is shown in the trailer but the film starts out in Pearl Harbor. I understand what they were trying to do. But Trying to squeeze Pearl and the events leading up to Midway into two and a half hours means you don't do either the justice they deserve. And yes to it's credit, it is at least not as bad as the Pearl Harbor film. There are great pains to show the military strategy leading up to Midway and they do try to depict both sides. However the film falters in how it portrays some aerial maneuvers. In one scene it shows a Dauntless climbing and stalling out and then dropping on an enemy. This shot was also shown in the trailer. Yes this was an actual manuever but you wouldn't see Dauntless pilots trying it because the plane's engine was too slow. There are also shots showing incorrect armament on these planes. But the average viewer isn't going to notice these things. Is Midway worth a watch then despite it's flaws? Yes. I feel there is enough here particularly with how they portray the intelligence leading up to the battle that is worth viewing. It's important to remember these events and the men who fought and died during them. While this may not be a perfect film? It does have it's heart in the right place. The steelbook itself is beautiful. It has a nicely rendered scene and comes in a slip case that gives the impression of "Fog". Very nice presentation.

Good and historically accurate war movie with strong performances by the actors.

After watching 1912 and being underwhelmed I decided to watch Midway. Midway did not have as great a rating as 1912 and I was not expecting much. Within a few minutes of watching this in the theater I immediately dismissed any doubt. This film was beautifully done. No nonsense just war. I wasn't sure on the historical accuracy of the film and after watching it I did a little research into the actual events that had occured. This film had me diving into hours of learning about the battle of Midway. Though not entirely accurate I felt it a worthy attribute to the events leading up to the Battle of Midway. The fighting was intense. The scenes and sound are beautiful. The 4K cinematography was outstanding. I really want this director to make more films (Perhaps with more accurate portrayal) about famous battles of WWI and WWII. No regrets on this one. Critics were harsh. Claims of "Another Pearl Harbor". Not so much. Minus the nonsense Hollywood romance (Who needs it?) and it is a movie about war folks. There will be lots of explosions and violence. The characters could have used a bit of additional sharpening.

Despite the mixed feelings many people have over director Roland Emmerich, I thought this was a good watch. For someone who does not like to read, movies are about the only pathway to learning about history that I have. Even though it has been dramatized, it gets the message across, and has a great balance between depicting the facts, and still being fun to watch. The visual effects and CGI in this movie are very stylized and nothing short of impeccable, and the HDR definitely made all the fire and explosions much brighter. Emmerich’s films are often visual spectacles. The Pearl Harbor bombing scene was very immersive. However I wish I could say this was edited with a 4K digital intermediate, but it was not. Despite being shot primarily in 8K, it was only finished at 2K and upscaled. So much missed potential in my opinion. The Atmos track on this disc, though, is absolutely one of the best. Going back to the Pearl Harbor scene, every plane that flew overhead, had an overhead sound effect, and the entire movie was like this. There is some heavy bass through that scene as the planes approach as well. The mixers definitely spared no Atmos effects, as there were height sounds at every time that there possibly could have been. I wish more tracks were like this. If you’re looking to show off your Atmos theatre system, this is without a doubt the disc to demo with. So, if not buying for the upscaled resolution, buy for the excellent Atmos track, and the pleasing colors and overall vibrant-punchy image.
