The worst kind of kids' stuff

Imagine the oldest fairy tale there is. Have you got it? No, not that one. Have you got it now? Yeah, that’s it. Now ask yourself if it can be made into a movie, again? The brain trust at Relativity Media asked themselves that question and came back with a resounding yes. Snow White (played by Lily Collins) is the only child of a benevolent king, referred to only as The King (played by Sean Bean) and his late wife who, except for the detail that she died while giving birth to Snow (Collins), is not referred to at all. The King was raising Snow so that she might one day rule over the kingdom, but he was consumed by a beast known to inhabit the woods long before that could happen. With The King gone and Snow not yet ready to take the throne, the duty passed to his wife Clementianna (played by Julia Roberts). With her husband gone, Snow is the only threat to The Queen’s rule, so she keeps her confined to the castle. When speaking to Snow, she claims it’s for safety reasons, but when her subjects inquire about the matter, she makes it appear as though the princess they’ve never seen is in a fragile state as a result of either physical or mental illness. All the while, her excesses have seen a once happy, wealthy kingdom turned into a fiefdom in dire financial straits populated by overtaxed miserable subjects. Her closest advisor, Brighton (played as an obsequious toady by the talented Nathan Lane) informs her that her best hope is to marry a Baron who has made numerous overtures in the past. But while the Baron possesses the wealth she desires, he is older and not particularly attractive. Then, as luck and uncreative storytelling would have it, a prince from a wealthy, faraway kingdom (played by Armie Hammer) is robbed, bound, and gagged by bandits inhabiting the woods, freed by Snow White, who has left the castle without the Queen’s permission, and then brought to the castle by the royal guard so that she might offer an apology and, of course, the King’s vacant seat in the throne. Now, of course, there have been numerous successful films based on fairy tales. Tangled (based on Rapunzel), Beauty and the Beast, and the original Disney version of Cinderella in a film simply titled Cinderella. While the two older films may not have the same appeal with the youth audience that Tangled does, they have greater appeal with older audiences, not just because of nostalgia, but because they are quality films. So, if you’re a parent and your children have been begging you to buy this film on DVD, make whatever effort you can to convince them to watch the older classic film or the more recent Disney features based on other fairy tales. This one just doesn’t hold up.

A new take on an old story

Like other people have already pointed out, if your looking for the same old story just rehashed into a new movie with different actors, then you may not like this film. However, if your looking for a new take on an old story that have been told countless times already, then you may enjoy this movie. I personally thought this was a very entertaining movie. There was some interesting ideas in it. They follow the Snow White story enough that you recognize the characters and the overall basic ideas are still there. They however stray enough off of that story to keep things interesting to the point you do not know EXACTLY what is going to happen like you usually do in this type of movie. As always, watch the movie and be your own judge. Don't let the negative reviews on this website keep you from enjoying this movie if you have an interest in it.

I had to write this to counter the previous reviewer. Sometimes I wonder what it is that folks expect from a movie based on a fairy tale. This was an excellent movie. It was adult enough for me to enjoy and light enough for my 5 year old daughter to be totally enthralled. She's seen several versions of Snow White. This one had her mesmerized. Sure the storyline doesn't follow Disney's - but, then again, Disney's storyline is a rehash of an even older version of Snow White. View and react to this release on its own merit.

Once again; Heroes need good Villains to play off of, and this movie provides great examples from which to draw from. The drama is down right captivating, which allows time passages to speed up. The movie is peppered with humor, and allows each character to showcase their funny side. All in all, a good movie experience that drew me into it and allowed me to forget about everything else for a short while ... and that is what a movie is suppose to do.

I have 3 kids, so I see alot of kids movies, this would be in my top 5 for the WORST ones I've seen. Maybe even top 2. I honestly can't find one good thing to say about it. I was hesitant about it in the first place, but b/c Julia Roberts was in this, I thought I would give it a chance. In my honest opinion, worst movie she has made. There was little or no effort to even make this a descent version of the fairy tale once they had a big name signed to do it.

Its definitely a different take on the Snow White tale. It is comical. Beautiful clothing. The plot itself needs a little touch-up , mostly with the wicked step mother and the mirror scenes. I think it is supposed to be that way to change the Mirror, Mirror on the Wall scenario, but it kind of plays off as a little odd to me. Other than that it is interesting!!

I found this movie in one of the $4.99 bins and purchased it with my rewards. My girls have watched it three times in the last two weeks, even though they saw it in the movie! Julia Roberts is fantastic as the wicked stepmother and Lily Collins is adorable as Snow White!

Julia Roberts makes a good evil witch!! As for the movie, it's the usual Snow White storyline and is an okay movie to help pass a little bit of time. Not a fantastic movie nor among my favorite movies. But if I need to pass some time it's a movie I can watch again.

It's been a long time since I've seen the movie but it's a fresh take on the story. I WILL say that the Bluray is a great value that comes with a copy and in a foil slip sleeve for a very low price. Bought as a gift for me sister and she loved it.

I didn't expect much so I wasn't really disappointed - but I like Julia Roberts so the entertainment for me was to see how she'd pull off this role (so I enjoyed watching her try to bring her role to life).

My teenage girls and I loved it. I like the new twist they put on the movie, so unexpected! You've got to see it if you love Disney. It can be scary for the little ones. I'd preview it first if they are under 13.

There seems to be a trend in creating new interpretation of either Grimm's or Andersen's fairy tales and it is always entertaining to see how each one is reinvented. This is one is a fun and light hearted version.

Reimagined Snow White story. Well done. Very enjoyable for my kids. DVD only included the disc no stream video code, unless you got the bluray. A behind the scenes video Looking Through the Mirror.

I wanted to add this movie to my collection and was so happy with what I paid for it. That is why most of my movies come from best buy. They just need to make there movie section a little bigger.

Loved the movie. Good to watch with the family. Similar to snow white, but with a twist. Had action, romance, comedy, and adventure. My son and I enjoyed it very much. Julia Roberts is my favorite.

Just like most other little girls, mine knows the Disney version of Snow White like the back of her hands, so it's fun for her to watch this version and compare the two. And I really enjoyed it too.

I bought the video because it was on sale and I gave it to my elderly mother for mothers day--she enjoyed it and said julia roberts was very good, but didn't like some of the gory parts.
