A large majority of films constantly depict blacks as the drug dealers and hood mercenaries that shoot first and don't even bother with questions. This is that same film, however it comes with a twist. It helps humanize the people that we are taught through mainstream media as monsters, and teaches us again that these "monsters" are actual real people that do have souls and hearts. In a time where blacks have to picket to remind people that they are human, and in fact, their lives matter too; this movie helps to deliver that message in a different way. Definitely a must see. It's one of those American History X type films that will open your eyes to the world. And it won and was nominated for some academy awards to boot!

While i agree with the Academy on their nomination of this film and it truly deserves all the credit and praise heaped upon it, I found something oddly missing in the film. I sadly miss say I don't understand Mahershala Ali's Best Supporting Actor win for this role as he is in the movie for only about 15 to 20 minutes total and that is early in the film and then I spent the balance (about 1 1/2 hrs) of the film waiting for his return into this young man's life. While I enjoyed the movie and highly recommend it, I think both "Fences" and "Hidden Figures" are superior films with more experienced actors who gave more endearing and enduring portraits of their characters.

The only reason I brought because I wanted to see what was all the hype. Had no idea what the movie was about. It started off a little slow and I started to turn it off. I'm so glad I didn't. Once I realized the whole idea. It made sense. It was a wonderful surprise on how it was directed. It left everything to the imagination. It didn't show to much much. It was the type of moving that will have you thinking and remembering to treat everyone with love and always be kind. Because you never know what a person is going through or has been through. It open my eyes. Great buy.

I bought this Blu-Ray on a whim because my $5 Best Buy certificate was going to expire that Saturday when sale prices for the week end & I had to get something fast! "And the Oscar goes to..." "La La Land"...not! While "La La Land" was a decent musical or a film with Ryan Gosling & Emma Stone posing as a musical in modern times, "Moonlight" just feels more gritty and real. The director, Barry Jenkins, is gifted in making the viewer feel for the characters, especially newcomer Mahershala Ali, who goes through a discovery of self in complex situations.

The movie follows the character Chiron through three stages of his life. He is African-American and Gay. His mother is a crack addict. They live in the ghetto of Miami. I went in to this thinking, here we go again, and overall, that is pretty much how it went. The pacing was somewhat slow and not a lot of time was spent on character development. But I have nothing but praise for Mahershala Ali who did so much with his role. I liked the movie for what it was trying to accomplish. It did not go all the way, but it is a start.

While LA LA LAND was my favorite film of the year, I was going to be okay with MOONLIGHT or MANCHESTER BTS winning Best Picture because they are 3 of the best films of 2016 (Toni Erdmann is another, I have a few more acclaimed ones to watch). I was rooting for LLL on Oscar night, but this little indie film could use the sales/rentals boost. It's a great film and not the type of story that gets made often, much less sees a wide audience, in a blockbuster-dominated market. I'm curious to see what director Barry Jenkins brings us next.

I like good dramas and "Moonlight" excels, and is excellent. Of course, I was disappointed at first during academy awards, as I met Beatty and Dunaway (same flight) in 1989 and knew it was not their fault for the goof. BUT after Moonlight won, I just had to rush out and buy it...at the BEST place to BUY: BEST BUY, which has the BEST prices(cheap), great deals. I like hard hitting dramas, and this is is great, hits the spot, and glad it won BEST PICTURE Oscar. SEE IT! BUY IT! I don't want to say more, as I might give away plot points.

I first saw Moonlight in the theater and could understand why it was nominated for Best Picture, though it was not my first choice to take the Best Picture Oscar. I cannot say I particularly "enjoyed" it, but I sure was impressed by the story and acting. Now that I have seen it again, I am even more impressed -- and this time I did "enjoy" it. On second viewing, I recognized things I had missed and came to appreciate the layers of the story and characters. This is truly a film to dive into and savor on multiple occasions.

There is a reason why Moonlight won the Best Picture award at the Academy Awards. The performances feel like the actors lived in these characters lives and it does not feel forced or people overacting to win awards. The story about a black, repressed gay man whose life turns from tragedy too some form of redemption or reconnect with those who he thought did not love him for who he is or respect him for what he is, is a beautiful, heartbreaking triumph of a film that should be seen with an open mind and an open heart.

A brilliant, beautiful film with incredible performances. Chiron is a sensitive man and Barry Jenkins’ brilliant screenplay showcases that. We get Mahershala Ali’s amazing supporting Academy Award winning performance and the technical elements are just as award worthy. The cinematography is top notch and the score elevated the film to a beautiful higher plane. The story is shown in three chapters but by the end, you may long for a fourth chapter.

Director Barry Jenkins, whom also adapted the screenplay from an existing piece of literature, does an outstanding job with this provocative, and painfully real take on growing up an outcast. The genius casting and score along with the gorgeous lighting choices and shot selection makes for a beautiful looking, but very gritty rough drama piece. Well deserved in all the praise and accolades it has received. Will definitely be keeping my eye out for Jenkins' work in the future.
