As a fighting game fan I must say this, I was never a big MK Fan. I liked MK 2 & 3 (REMEMBER THE RUN BUTTON...LOL), but after that it just got really stale. The series was given life by Shaolin Monks, not even a fighting game, but then taken back by the PG-13 MK vs. DC. But enough about the back story of MK, lets focus on this gem of a game.
For starters let’s talk about the overall look and presentation overhaul. The visuals in this game are absolutely stunning, from level design to character models. During fights your character actually receives progressive body damage...from cuts, gashes, chunks of flesh missing, etc.
The biggest presentation change is how they bring the story across. First off, don't think about traditional fighting game storylines that really serve no purpose to the game. This story is a lengthy, well thought out dive into the world of MK. The way the story is told, new to the franchise players will love it, and old MK vets (such as myself) will be well pleased, you may even have an "Oh $#!^" moment...I know I did..lol.! All throughout the story mode the game transitions from cutscene to fight and back so seamlessly..a touch I love when games get right, *Casltevania*.
Speaking of fighting let me touch on that a bit. The fighting engine seems to be a mix of classic MK and trends from new age fighters. Of course they have all the traditional MK basics...sweep, uppercut, and classic special moves, but now they have added the ability 2 do custom combos. You can now juggle & bounce your opponent all over the stage... a la the Tekken series. Plus they now have the option of EX-ing all of the characters special moves, a la Street Fighter. And the last new addition to the fighting engine is the addition of Special Super -Type move that show the Deep Impact of the attack. Some of these are pretty Bad @$$.
As far as the replay value for this game, it's extremely high. There is so much stuff 2 unlock...yes folks, the krypt is back. You spend coins that you earn from the various game modes, in the krypt 2 buy fatalities, costumes, concept art, etc.
In the end, this is (my opinion) the best fighter out right now. Tons of characters+great visuals+killer story+high replay value=1 heluva Fighter..!!!!

i was kinda skeptical on buying this game thinking it was gonna be the same as the previous MK, but i was wrong! i was always a big fan of mortal kombat ever since the very first one came out. i never really get a chance to play MK vs DC so i can't really comment on that.
anyway, this game brings backs memories of MK1 - MK2 - MK3 a bits and pieces of MK4 deadly alliance. they did however forgot to put motaro on story mode. but that's okay cause i always hated fighting that half man half horse anyway! graphics are cool. control is very easy to learn, but it takes a lil practice. i like the x-ray move feature they added. I also like how they brought back raiden's original move from MK1
some chapters on story mode is kinda hard, specially when your almost at the end. and did I mention shao kahn has a medium to hard AI and has a very strong x-ray move and that cement hammer he has that gets me frustrated. lol.
all in all, I am happy with my purchase.
i'm just hoping they make shao kahn & goro as DLC characters for offline use only!

The best part about the NEW Mortal Kombat is that it features all of the OLD characters from the classic MK games. Over the years MK has been deluded by bogus new characters and has finally embraced all of the original characters and storylines that made the game great for me when I was a kid!
And of course the new one is tons of fun to play!

This is the 9th installment of the Mortal Kombat series. After missing the ball on so many of the sequels, Old Midway/ New Warner bros. finally gets it right by taking it back to the roots, 2D. That's right ladies and gentlemen. They put killer animations, sick fatalities, tons of gaming modes, and online capability that will rivet even the avid MK player to the first time user.
The controls are smooth and handles well. The graphics are the best that the next gen systems can offer. The PS3 version gets Kratos from GOW. This is a great game when MVC3 gets boring, and when you want some variety from super street fighter 4.
Get this game.

This is the best Mortal Kombat game I've played since Mortal Kombat Trilogy back in the old days. This game delivers everything that fans enjoy and love. I bought the PS3 Collector's edition, and was happy with my purchase. It's online and story modes are incredible and very addicting. With more DLC coming out with more characters and so, this game is a must. For the price, it's worth every penny. Enjoy.
Finish Him!

If you never played MK, thats not important, because this is like a reboot of the series. Its got classic characters with new graphics, new story and better gameplay thats easy to learn.
Unlike other fighting games that feel incomplete, or intentionaly leaving things out, this game feels complete, and developers really worked hard to creating a full game experience. There is a arcade mode, where u fight a ladder of 10 characters and get a lil ending movie for your character, a story mode, where a story is told and you play as each character thru out the story, a challenge mode which is 100 battles that get progressively harder, like defeat your enemy with no arms, or win without jumping. Then there are mini games, to get a nice distraction as well. Each character has 2 costumes, and fun online experience as well. Great Game highly recommend over the competition

If you have both ps3 and xbox360, get it for the ps3. It has kratos and stages that 360 didnt even get (finally ps3 gets love from devs) Has all the original characters that we all liked and a nice mix of some of the newer ones. I didnt care for it much at first but warmed up to it after playing story mode, which has you play as story driven characters in various parts and plots of the story. I thought it was a cool concept and different from most other fighters. I like how you have to play as characters you may have otherwise never even thought of using. If that doesnt sound good to you then there is still the classic challenge tower just like in all the other older games. There is also a place on the game where you go to spend earned money on unlockables which for me helps drive me to play more. This is the mk that i think will please all mk fans no matter if you liked the old or the newer ones. My one complaint is im not a fan of the sound. I use my home theater setup while gaming and i have to crank the volume higher than any of my other games and it will be mostly quiet then sudden loud parts. i'd rather it be more consistant than what it is.

Long time without playing any MK. I used to be a fan of MKs 1 and 2 before I left the series. Time will tell if MK9 is broken or not, but as a fan of SF4 series and MvC3, what can I say, so far it is amazing.
The game is plenty of offline contents and challenges, what is greatly appreciated in a genre that normally lacks contents more than abuses them. As you advance in completing each one and also by winning combats, you earn money for buying many kinds of unlockables, including fatalities, storyboards, new skins for each char and much more.
Fighting mechanic is pretty easy to get, moves just go out without too much technical issues, but performing a high-stamina damaging combo requires some skills and practice. Even in this case, anybody will get it with some few hours on the joystick. The 5.1 sound sensation is excellent and graphics and scenarios are first class (much better that any other fighting game I played), but interaction with chars during contact and hits has some glitches; even when distracting, it is not detracting to the whole fighting experience (at least for me, different kind of opinions along my friends). So far the fight is good, but if you are a fan of fighting games you will note sooner than later that the gaming is simpler and less demanding than other games, like SF4 and MvC3. In MK it is more important to know when to use a move rather than making the move itself. Difficulty is not that hard, even in expert; some hours on the game and you will defeat the worst of the rivals.
Moves and fatalities have a special mention; they are depicted in a very brutal way; also, each char finishes a combat with a lot of heals and blood. In summary, the game has a lot of gore content. Consider this in the decision if you are going to buy the game for your kids; most will consider it is not appropriate for children.
A pending matter is the behavior of the game online. As PSN is down for already 2 weeks, I can´t say nothing about. What I read is that sells were more than expected and that some saturation and lag was present online. I can’t say more by now.
In summary, being or not a fan of the series, the game itself is very rewarding for me. Just a personal opinion, so consider carefully that you may not be in agreement if you have some issues with the series. Not my case.

This game is great. Better then all the MK before it. The story line is great and its long, which I have no problem with. What they have done with sub-zero is great!! I'm not going to tell you whats different, if you are a true MK fan you will fine out. :) Having Kratos in the game is a bonus as well. The graphics are awesome the fighter and different moves, and the X-ray are beyond what I expected. Can't wait to start learning the different fatalities. All together great game. Game of the year........so far, the year isnt over yet.

The storyline for this game was great. I wanted to keep playing and once I did beat the story, there was still a lot of game to be played. The Challenge Tower can keep me occupied for hours and all of the different fighters that need to be mastered make this game fun and new. The online play is great with the King of The Hill feature and Tag Team. This game is a Best Buy and I recomend highly!

While I have not beaten the game yet, I only picked up my copy yesterday, I have GREATLY enjoyed the game. The only "flaws" I've seen with the game have to do with some of the story mechanics. The information released for the game claimed to allow you to change the MK history. This isn't really done by any choice the player makes, but by a linear story line. This doesn't really surprise me as MK has always been very linear. That aside, I'm loving the game. The only other thing I'd fix is the lag issue in online multiplayer.
