I originally bought this computer as a work laptop. I am a software engineer and I need a computer that can continuously run programs that take up a lot of processing power for my work. On a daily basis, I am able to run a locally hosted server for testing the company web application, a Java server instance for processing incoming TCP and UDP traffic for database storage, a virtual machine running a Linux operating system, IDEs, multiple SSH terminals to remote machines, and more browser tabs than I can count. This machine is able to process all of these tasks, along with background various communication applications with incredible response time and no noticeable lag, making it very easy for me to finish my work in a timely manner.
I have also been able to do extensive gaming with this laptop and there has been nothing to complain about on this end. This machine was compatible with my headset, mouse, and second monitor and the MSI Dragon Center is very convenient for allowing me to switch between my work and game mode computer settings.
Overall, I am very impressed with the machine. This is the first high end laptop that I have purchased and I am very satisfied with it. I will definitely be considering MSI products for any of my future computer related needs.

Fragile.. and Geek Squad Protection Plan worthless

Bought this system in April. Sat on my desk working great for 5 months. Then I needed to actually close the laptop and it seemed a bit stiff so I very gingerly tried to close it... specifically trying to assist the the left hinge to turn which seemed to be sticking. Despite that effort, with very little force the hinge popped the bezel and broke off the corner of the monitor.
A month ago I left it with the geek squad to do the repair guaranteed by the warranty with a 2 week estimate. 2.5 weeks past without a word. We called in and were told it had been waiting on a part but the part was in and it would be a few more days. 4 days later, I called again and after a long wait on hold was told it was still waiting on a part, but they would look into it and call me back. 4 days after that I called again and they said it was in the service center and the service center would be deciding how long they would wait on a part before pursuing other replacement options. They also told me I could get status on the web app. So, I signed into the web app which could not find my service number... great.
I called their 800 # and after a long wait I got a very nice, sympathetic service person. Apparently, there is a known bug in their website where if your service call takes longer than expected, you can no longer look at it through the public interface! In addition, if they have a problem getting parts, they will hold your computer for 30-45 days and then make a decision on whether they will offer a replacement or prorated payment in replacement of the computer. Meanwhile, I have been without a computer.
So now it has been a full month and I called the 800 number. Spent 5 minutes giving the automated system all possible phone numbers and the service number and it couldn't find my issue so it finally parked me on hold which said there was a wait and did I want a call back in 7 minutes. Chose the call back option... and 30 minutes later I called again and this time waited the 9 minutes for someone to answer. The customer service person was able to find my ticket and found out there had been no updates since I called... no, really? Now they have theoretically opened an escalation ticket. I am supposed to get a call within 48 hours, but forgive my skepticism since they have NEVER called backed.
The core cause of this problem is that either MSI is not supplying parts or the Geek Squad service center is incompetent. I currently am voting for both.

Not buying this laptop because of the trackpad.

I sold my 2 years old MSI GS63 laptop to buy this one. However, when I tried a display model in Best Buy I noticed that I cannot put my right hand palm on laptop to type because of the long trackpad and its centered location. I really wanted this laptop but the inability to type comfortably ruined it. Since then, I visited Best Buy to try to get used to the keyboard, however, I could not. The more I tried it, the more I was convinced that the laptop is too uncomfortable. As a loyal MSI customer, I'm holding off until they fix the trackpad design. Sadly, there is no other 17 inch laptop that I want in the market right now. This issue needs to get to MSI asap and be fixed for next year's model. GS65, the 15.6 inch model is fine. However, this 17 inch one is not because of the number pad. It's not a desktop where you can replace keyboards. I take my laptop around and what good is it if I cannot use the keyboard? Lost too much practicality over aesthetics. If you want to make the trackpad long then put it centered to the space bar. If you want the trackpad in the center for aesthetics purpose, then don't make it long! Has the design team even tried the laptop? I't s a shame.
