I bought this after my AM4 mobo died and it would be too costly to do a 1 to 1 replacement of it. I went into this with a few things that I needed.
-Alpha-numeric diagnostic code read out as well as lower placement of the readout to be lower then a AIO radiator and fans when top mounted.
-Smart PCIE lane assignment
-Plenty of I/O
-Easy detach top slot for easier removal of the GPU.
This was the best board that met the criteria and it was over $60 off when purchased at $329. Installation into the case was easy enough. Markings on the ram slots are easier to read then on ASUS boards.
There are spots on the rear of the board that warn you of fragile spots that are very clearly marked.
Once built out I found that the board came with a BIOS from January of 2025 which is recent enough to take the 9800X3D and train the RAM pretty quickly.
SSD slots for days.
A word of warning M.2 slot 2 will lane share or spilt the lane between the USB4 ports on the back and it. Samsung's 990 EVO plus does Gen 5 x2 which is exactly what the M.2 slot 2 reduces to with USB4 slots populated.
My main gripe is the lack of documentation on the power connector at the bottom of the board. Turns out that it's supplemental power for the PCI-E slots so don't freak out if you cannot connect it.

Great price. Has CMOS button and onboard LED debug. Possible USB issues Awesome motherboard, paired it with a 9950x3d and a 9070xt. Would highly recommend this over most. Lane sharing is big concern with x870 motherboards but, this one shares lanes between usb4 and second m.2 slot if I understand correctly which you can disable usb4 in bios and run full x4 on the m.2 if you choose. Meaning you dont have to lane share with GPU EVER because it shares between m.2 and usb4. which is a huge plus compared to other motherboards. Only issues ive had with it, if I have my camera connected and not using it with camera hub or obs, it'll keep randomly connecting and disconnecting multiple times which leads to a very bad input lag to keyboard and mouse. Sometimes my stream deck will also randomly disconnect. I dont believe its a hardware issue i think its more of a bios/software issue. Still for the price, I still do recommend this product, runs the 9950x3d pretty well. Nice having debug LED and a CMOS button instead of having to remove battery or short the battery pins on the motherboard.

The first thing I noticed about the MSI Mag X870E Tomahawk is the weight. That baby is heavy which I like because to me that is indicative of quality. Also noticed that the PCB is twice as thick as my old motherboard. So it will stand the test of time which I like because I hold onto my motherboards until they are no longer functional. I bought it for overclocking and is compatible with a lot of the good name brand ram companies. I wanted the G.Skill neo royal cl28 high end ram which this board is compatible with. The overclocking is a breeze and beginner friendly with the built in A.I. features. All in all I really like the board so far.

I've always used MSI products - motherboards, PSUs, GPUs. Never been disappointed.
The MAG X870e is massive - heaviest mobo I've ever used. Easy install into a Fractal Design R5 case, AMD cpu installed without a hitch. The board has lived up to its promise.
Product manuals are online and more than adequate, even for your first build.

Great motherboard with excellent pricing, it even includes features from very expansive boards. I paired it with the 9950X3D and 2x48GB 6400MT memory. The only problem I had was when trying to use surround sound with Linux. The ALC4080 codec works, but port remapping does not, so I am currently unable to use my 5.1 system and I have not found any solution yet.

Last build was the X570 Tomahawk and chose to go with the new Tomahawk X870E.Excellent motherboard to pair with the 9800x3d and soon an RTX 5090 in a few days. Plenty of usb ports and can install up to 4 M.2 drives. Only problem I've had is getting a 0d error when I restart from windows but might just need a new bios update.

I recently upgraded my built after getting a 5080 and this board is great simple to set up great amount of ports especially the spdif I like that no rgb is present on the board as I prefer to add rgb fans that can all be controlled by one software. Great nvme mounting brackets

This product is super nice, you can really feel the quality of the motherboard. The ease release pcie gpu slot is very helpful when you have big graphics cards. No issues at all and it looks really cool with the green accents. Loving it so far!

One of the best motherboards you can get for its price and it doesn't have gpu lane sharing when you use multiple ssd slots. Everything works out of the box.

Really good motherboard so far. Performs well with my 9800X3D and it worked out of the box, no need to update the MOBO. Use M2 slots 1 and 4 if you got M2 drives and leave the rest alone or you might run into some performance problems especially slot 3 because it shares bandwidth with the fastest Type C port in the back, if you're not gonna use the type c port though you can turn off the Type C port in mobo and have full speed dedicated to the #3 M2 slot. Also a heads up, the Wifi on the board will not work unless you're on windows 11, if you plan on sticking with windows 10 make sure you are hardwired or get your own wireless card. It's not MSI fault honestly, windows 10 simply doesn't support WIFI 7. Overall I'm pretty happy.

I received the board today, installed everything, and all my drives were recognized. The only issue I encountered was that the chipset drivers wouldn't install, but I'll troubleshoot that separately.
Overall, I like the board. This is actually the second MSI motherboard I've owned—the first one went into a build for someone else, and since they never had any complaints, it must have worked well. This time, the system booted up quickly with no major issues aside from the chipset drivers. I'd say this is one of the better X870 boards available.

I've been using the MAG X870E TOMAHAWK WIFI, and I have to say—this motherboard is an absolute beast! The setup was smooth, and everything worked flawlessly right out of the box. Pairing it with the latest AMD processor was effortless, and the performance has been rock-solid.
Whether I’m gaming, editing videos, or multitasking, this board handles everything without breaking a sweat. If you’re looking for a stable, high-performance motherboard with top-tier features, this is the one to get. Highly recommended!

A Solid Board...

Okay, let's begin. This is a solid MSI board and if you have enjoyed the MAG series boards, then this one will not disappoint. Installation of CPU presented a bit of a challenge since the socket was not clearly marked where the "corner" was. However, if you call up the manual on your phone, the diagram will show you. If it is your intention to keep the board, make sure you get the CHK code before you mount it, because when you do product registration with MSI, you will need it and the serial number. Installation of M.2 SSDs is pretty user friendly, and if you are populating all 4 M.2 slots, then be warned that the M.2_2 slot shares a lane with PCI-e x4 and that goes to the 40Gbps usb slots in the back. If you use the M.2_2 slot, you need to be aware that your bandwidth will be reduced to x2. Another thing to note is that the M.2_2 slot will not operate with an AMD 8000 series processor. M.2_1, 2_3 and 2_4 will still operate though, but if you want to populate all four slots, then a 7000 or 9000 series Ryzen CPU would be the way to go. It has 2 USB 2 headers on the board, pretty standard, and 2 USB 3 headers as well, which is a change from the TUF board I had which only had one USB 3 header on the board. The number of USB ports on the I\O panel are good, but the color coding makes it easy to plug the right peripheral into the right slot. There is a 5G ethernet port I am itching to try out. once faster service becomes widely available and the WiFi adapter does a good job maintaining connectivity with my gateway. The first boot up took some time because the board had to get used to the DDR5 sticks and bios has to determine the boot drive and all of this takes a few minutes. Once the board learns what it has installed, then my boot times dropped to about 18-30 seconds, and that's with a Ryzen 9 7800 and G.Skill Trident Z Neo sticks set to 7200 MT/s. The PCI-e5x16 slot is ready for the next generation of video cards, but if you have the money for one of those, then you can splurge and get a Carbon WiFi board, or a MEG Godlike, just keep in mind how many SSDs you intend to install and research if those boards have the M.2 slots to accommodate your needs. All in all, it's a solid board for casual gamers, and MSI tends to stand behind their products, which makes the RMA process a whole lot easier. One negative, if we can call it that is it is a bit pricey now due to supply chain concerns. I purchased it at $299, but now it's about $100 more.

Spent a lot of time researching AM5 motherboards and this one truly shined among the rest as far as price and features that I was looking for. I've used both ASUS and MSI motherboards in the past and MSI tends to be the choice that I prefer due to the BIOS/UEFI layout. This motherboard is physically built very well and is very high quality. I especially love the E-Z clip on and off heatsinks for the NVMe SSD drives and the E-Z push button to lock and unlock the GPU. Overall, I am very pleased and happy with the MSI MAG X870E Tomahawk. Definitely a motherboard I would buy again.

Great motherboard so far

I've only had it a few days, but so far it's been great!
The main reason I choose it was because it was one of the few AM5 motherboards that had what I felt was good lane sharing. The only thing that is shared is the 2nd M2 slot and USB4 with the option to disable one or the other for full bandwidth. It also has 4 M2 slots which was important to me for future upgrades.
The other big reasons I picked was it also had S/PDIF out, great USB connectivity options, POST code LED, BIOS Flashback, anda clear CMOS button. All excellent features to have!
It also has great VRMs, a 5x16 PCIE slot as well as 2 other PCI slots, and a large amount of headers on the board for all your expansion needs. The BIOS has been solid as well.
If you want a great AM5 motherboard for a reasonable cost this is an excellent option.
