I bought this as part of an Intel build to update from my aging PC. Everything was extremely intuitively placed and happened to pair extremely well with my Corsair 5000D case. I would highly recommend this motherboard as it served all my connectivity needs and onboard WiFi was a must for me.

Motherboard with a bad reputation. Is it true?

I am well aware that the MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk DDR5 motherboard has significant issues. I think MSI cut back on quality and assurance for this model of motherboards. The first one I received was DOA. One bent pin. Straightened and it did not boot up. I flashed the BIOS and it would not flash. Thank you for Best Buy's awesome return policy and being within the generous return window, I was able to have it replaced. The replacement is working as intended. Almost two months now and it is running very well. I play videogames and I use my PC as a workstation as well. Fortunately, no issues for me so far. I am both lucky and unlucky. But that is the case when it comes to building PCs. I love the stealth black design and colors. It is by far my favorite motherboard in terms of aesthetics. Very few companies make motherboards that have a simple, sleek, stealthy design. They are all filled with RGB lighting and bloated features. The MAG Z790 has plenty of features and functionalities that meet my needs and then some. Plenty of space between hardware slots. I have two sticks of RAM, a Noctua Chromax Black heatsink with one fan, a PCI-e dedicated soundcard and a Asus TUF RTX 4070 Ti GPU that is larger than most standard size graphics cards. Yet everything fits well with enough room in between components and parts. Overall, I have very satisfied. I am both unlucky and lucky. First purchase was DOA, but the replacement is working as intended without issues, so far. I am very happy with Best Buy's customer service. They take great care of their customers and honor their policies. I highly recommend being a Total Tech member if you are not savvy with computer building. They have Geek Squad that will help with troubleshooting your PC. I think this motherboard gets a bad reputation, and probably rightfully so. But when it works, it's a fantastic motherboard.

Fantastic motherboard with less bloat than ASUS. I did see that these boards have a chance to be dead on arrival, however I was unaffected.

Pretty good motherboard. Can’t complain about the performance. The only reason this is 3 stars is because the first board was dead on arrival. After exchanging it it then worked perfectly fine.

Terrible it wouldn’t work couldn’t get any help. I have total Best Buy membership. What a waste of money I am finished with Best Buy. I spent thousands of thousand dollars on computer parts and can’t get any help with it. I have to call Australia to the manufacturer. This is so ridiculous and then they discontinued the part. I wonder why they sell crappy computer parts

Despite the things I heard from reviews, this motherboard did NOT come out of the box totally bricked. Have been using it since I built my PC and haven't had any issues.

This is the 3rd mobo that has failed to post. Flash bios worked but would not post. Consistant red yellow white leds. Replaced cpu chip, memory and cooler. Still cycles r, y, white and ventually turns off. Fans/rgb work but I’m not able to install win11 as no hdmi vonnection. Am at wits end with this board! Looks like this ones going back too. What luck getting bad mobos. Been trying to gef a system going since June.

    Buy at your own risk...

I purchased this MOBO and have had nothing but issues. At first, it was the power usage, then an audio glitch began happening where it would crackle then progressively get worse until the audio would go out and the only way to fix it was to restart my computer. The power issue seems to have been resolved by a new setting they put in the BIOS last week, 4/26/24 (I bought this 6 months ago). I've RMA'd it once, the 'new' (refurbished) MOBO I received has the same exact issues. They want to RMA it again, but this time they want to replace it with an all white MOBO (because they can't sell them, I'm guessing). I'm at the point I'm going to ask for a refund and use another brand... This issue is a known issue, and they still made me pay for shipping on the first RMA (they are paying for the second). From everything I gathered online, this is a Realtek hardware issue from the built-in audio components on the MOBO. The crazy thing is, many people have the same issue, but everyone fixed it a different way. I've never seen anything like this, honestly, and I've put together multiple PCs for myself and friends/colleagues. For some reason, everything that was mentioned online didn't work for me. And, MSI's tech support will not walk you through anything related to BIOS settings. They consider it as consumer OCing at that point, even though the MOBO OCs the CPU to too high of settings straight out of the box. I asked the support specialist why wouldn't they have it set to CPU default safe settings right out of the box and then leave it up to the consumer to OC from there. He said that makes sense, but that's not how we do it here... ASUS has a setting in the BIOS to stay within CPU safe settings. The new setting in the MSI BIOS I spoke of earlier that seemed to fix the power issue for me was... Intel - dynamic tuning technology, I turned that on and have not had any "out of memory" errors or blue screens since...

    Technical Issues

Let me first state I am a huge fan of MSI MOBOs for my pc builds, however, this is the first time I am posting a poor review. Upon arrival thing board would not post, but did show it had power. While troubleshooting I found lots of articles from other people in the same boat. They could use the bios flash and CMOS reset on the back, but it ultimately wouldn’t help the board post. After countless hours I decided to return the board and upgrade to the z790 mag edge, which was only slightly more. Next time I’ll do my research better. If you buy this and its not a dud like many others, then I’d assume it be a great board.

MSI motherboards hands down are top of the line and I believe better than Asus Rog Motherboards. Ive had less issues with MSI over Asus and much easier bios using.
