Delves into Native American culture and history

This impressive four-part PBS series, narrated by musician Robbie Robertson (himself a Mohawk), delves deeply into the history, culture, lifestyles and rarely discussed accomplishments of Native Americans. From excavated ancient cities to an appreciation of their contribution to the concept of democracy, the filmmakers utilize brisk editing, roving camerawork and animation to produce a moving, yet entertaining exploration of the original inhabitants of the Americas. The program provides an in-depth look at Native American rituals, scientific accomplishments and wall art that should prove enlightening to many viewers. Ceremonies rarely filmed are given welcome context and the detailed overview of their deep connection to the environment and the natural world make for an at-times startling program. New light is shed on their perseverance in the face of colonization and conquest. Recommended for ages 10 to 18, as well as adults. I give this 5 out of 5 stars. Reviewed by Michael F., KIDS FIRST!
